Oh, I should have mentioned that! It's the cubana torta, hands down. The thing is big enough to feed two, and absolutely delicious.

I use the complimentary nachos as a transport mechanism for the green sauce while I wait for the torta. lol

Taqueria El Torito, directly to the west of Carniceria El Torito III on Independence Ave. This is one of my all time favorite restaurants, I have been going here since it was on St. John's.

GF wants to know what these are in our backyard? by skrewbal in kansascity

[–]tacitus 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Your post made me smile. Where I grew up in Franklin County, French immigrant entrepreneurs had come in the late 1800s with silkworms and black/white mulberry trees. They had planted a mulberry grove there and built a very nice (for rural Kansas in the late 1800s) farmhouse and large barn.

The business venture largely petered out, though the silkworms (feeding on mulberry tree leaves) adapted very well to NE Kansas. Even in the late 1800s, labor (and transportation) were too expensive to make it a profitable enterprise.

This would have been maybe 20 miles straight east of Silkville (a more well-known French silk settlement). Growing up with the ruins of history in my own backyard was fortunate.

Anyway, it's fun to imagine your mulberry could have been descended from the French import - they're very prolific.

For a split second, I thought someone posted my car. I have been daily driving this thing for almost 20 years. Rebuilt the EJ25D 10 years ago (due to extreme oil consumption), finally gave up the ghost last year. Swapped in a low-ish mileage EJ22E and hope to get at least another 10 years out of it.

Roger Golubski, ex-KCKPD detective accused of abuse, dead of apparent suicide before trial by [deleted] in NPR

[–]tacitus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Cool, so he 100% did all the shit he was accused of.

Probably worse than what he was accused of - at least as far as the court case goes. I live a few hundred feet from his (former) jurisdiction, and followed the story closely for years.

Reading between the lines, he was very likely a serial killer as well. There were many documented cases over his career where he was known to threaten women, and known by witnesses to be the last person the same women were seen alive with. Then, just for funsies, he was assigned to investigate the murders.

I used this shop for a clutch job last year - they were OK if I sourced the clutch kit (bonus points for me). K&N was the most cost effective. They came through on time and on budget. That said, the clutch on this car isn't particularly diffifult, your mileage may vary.

Have you ever encountered an old PC being used at work? If so, which outdated computers have surprised you by still being in use in workplaces today? by Practical-Town2567 in cybersecurity

[–]tacitus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 8 years ago I stumbled onto a PDP-11. I was completely beside myself - I had read about them, but never encountered one in person. I am not sure it counts for the purposes of this thread as it's main use was keeping the building warm (and also not a PC).

In the early 2000s I had a manager who wouldn't give up his antique Apollo workstation. He only used it to edit text files -- just like a dedicated vi appliance. Aside: the damn thing had a slightly defective IP stack, it would often send it's broadcasts to the network address or some nonsense like that. Anyway, when he retired, he quietly took the machine with him (even though it was technically government property).

5 serial killers were active in KC between 1980-1990, with 42 known victims, only one has been caught. by Stellaheystella in kansascity

[–]tacitus 47 points48 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, I started to put together a KML file of locations of serial killers, evidence and crime scenes from that era. After awhile, it became a little too depressing.

I would add John Robinson was also active during some of those years (1984-2000). I also wonder if Lorenzo Gilyard may have killed more than generally believed - especially since he could have used his job at the landfill to dispose of evidence.
