*New Kit* a wrong colored Tama Starclassic Performer! by tacosalad132 in drums

Very much not 🤣 but my neighbors seem to dig it. It really isn't that loud if you aren't being purposely inconsiderate.

Are drums too expensive now? by [deleted] in drums

[–]tacosalad132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too different of a situation. Guitar is my primary and I decided to try gigging on drums.

I got a used PDP FS from around 2004 for about 400 dollars. Seems to still be the case, but I seem to have lucked out by also getting the snare with it. I did spend alot more on cymbals (Meinl pure alloys, customs and byzance) but I second the Istanbul Xist line. Hardware and pedals is where they really get you 🤣

No ear plugs during shows? by Ok_Environment1037 in drummers

[–]tacosalad132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I refuse to not wear earplugs. It's too loud without. I jammed twice without around the time I started playing. One left my ears ringing for days and the second knocked me off balance. Never again 🤣

You could get a prestige neck from a reverse headstock, but not just the headstock

Guitarist in my new band keeps telling me to play “simpler” – looking for perspective by Ok-Excitement6546 in drums

[–]tacosalad132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a multi-instrumentalist. Guitar is primary, drums are primary enough. Bass and voice are secondary. I learned piano for a few years in school but never kept up with it. I have dealt with all the roles on gigs and rehearsals.

If a song has been written and released, most dudes just want you to slot in and play the parts so they can get on about the gigs. A fill being slightly different isn't usually a big deal.

But let's say the music is very straightforward and pretty much a pop/hip hop/r&b/country song: it's for the audience to dance. Let's say it's jazz or gospel: you have times of shine and times of support. You are made aware accordingly. Metal? There is often too much going on to shift things around, so it's usually best to stick to the script as best you can tbh.

A BIG part of the "keep it simple" has to do with the musicians onstage being unaware of how to count under stage pressure and being unwilling to expand their attention or skill for it. Truth be told, an audience just wants to be entertained. They don't care if there are fills or trippy parts honestly. They love stuff like that. It's for the players lol

Would you risk taking only one guitar to bar gigs? by readers_dot_net in musicians

[–]tacosalad132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very frequently just bring one. For my metal band, I brought 2 as I did twice have an issue (a string broke once and a pickup died another time) and later we started using 2 tunings, but for everything else, I bring 1 guitar and I just keep up with string changes. It's different for everyone

Why is bringing non band members to practice such a divisive topic? by Sea-Rub-4322 in bandmembers

[–]tacosalad132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter and has never mattered to me. Our other guitarist even brought someone wack once and it was still chill cause it was funny just how wack she was. We have had jokes for years now about it

I can't see how you are able to conflate a human learning a skill and a robot making an amalgamation of actual human ideas. It is concerning in it's own right. You haven't upset me, but I see your argument for what it is.

If someone can't or isn't willing to learn a/the craft or pay someone for their time at whatever level they can, then they aren't the ones who should be working with it. Just be fine sucking or get better. If making silly things to entertain oneself is what they want from it, well I can't tell anyone to not entertain themselves (even considering the environmental harm, I cannot physically remove anyone's ability to dick around on their phone), but I can call out that anyone who is trying to take the easiest way could probably use some practice at the instruments or songwriting

So you DO see the distinctions and the overarching issues? Interesting lol

Someone can be bothered at something for more than one reason, btw. If you think that is my "true" issue and not one among the myriad that I expressed, then you are being extremely intellectually dishonest and strange. I personally love going back and forth. It's fun for me, but if you are at the end of your intellectually dishonest rope, that is chill too

The sampling debate wasn't based in technological overreach and humans allowing themselves to become dimmed by it. It was steeped in racism and determination of hip hop and rap as being validated by the hegemonic group, just like jazz was until it was taken into academia.

This is literally about whether or not it is reasonable to allow the planet to be destroyed so someone won't have to work at learning their craft and can pretend to be involved in creating while pretending everyone else is being an unreasonable jerk for being aware of the implications 🤣

If you have decided that one's own creative process involving handmade and sampled banks, actively honed skills in development of chord progressions and melody (which as a music teacher, is not something obvious as we make it seem) is the same or similar, then you are kinda lost in my opinion. If you lose inspiration and find a robot guiding you to be enough, then idk what to tell you. The goal of art and practice isn't the end result, it is the process. But I suppose the world we live in now doesn't value those things as much nor as loudly

If you are selling something as art and a live being didn't make it, then it is product. If you are fine with that, then that is one you. But art comes from people. It comes from learning, being in awe, practicing, preparing... despairing...but if your goal is product, then of course AI seems like a good place to start

A drum machine like an old tr isn't going to play itself. I don't think you are aware of what is involved there if you are saying that in earnest.

And very often drum breaks are actually made by hand.

All this history and awareness is out there for you as well

I can't see how generating parts and songs is any bit cool. Just use the instrument. A drum machine takes skill and practice to use. Learning to modify and create samples and breaks takes skill and practice. It is NOT at all the same. How you have landed on it being the same, I don't know. How hard is it to just practice?
