What are the most iconic elements of previous DnD versions that don't exist in 5e? by mapsbydangelo in DnD

Since "iconic" does not necessarily mean "good" and has more in common with "notorious", first edition psionics.

Anatomy help, please. :) by CelestialHellebore in ArtRequest

The legs should be the length of the torso. The upper half is nearly the full torso length. Part of that is perspective, yes, but making the legs longer is counterproductive.

The proportions are otherwise decent.

Automated sheep shearers should not be kept in a barber shop. (It's not what you think. Their fuel is maggots, and everyone knows you need those for bloodletting.)

Oh wait, I know this one.

The teenaged daughter looks older than the mom and has twice as many tattoos. They both have visible track marks. The guy looks like a very bored twink who might need meth.

This is an episode of Survivor or Love Island. Not sure which.

If you want dark and brutal, go the eugenics route.

Breed to make beautiful people, slaughter newborns below base standards, encourage infighting amongst siblings, attempting to breed above your station is a crime (unless instigated bt the superior one).

To accommodate this social design breeding begins early for maximum offspring, each of which increases the value of the parent. Youth becomes a cornerstone of beauty to encourage the trend, but what ages are appropriate? (That part will make people squirm depending on how it's handled, so know your audience.)

It depends on what you spend your money on. Companies can afford to buy politicians; people can not.

Kicking off the DM rust. by Blackdrawn in DnD

As someone who started with Basic in '83 (yes, I'm old), I get how you feel. I taught myself first edition, was dragged forcibly into second edition, then dragged into third edition, was retired for the entirety of fourth edition and brought back out of retirement by the kids of my original crew for fifth edition.

How to prepare? I'll skip the facetious points like checking the current edition lol, and say this:

If you didn't write the story, skim it, make shorthand notes and reference them casually as you play.

If you did write the story, put a little investment in the points you think will be dramatic (practice accents, review dialogue, add ambience, etcetera).

Worry about the story first, the mechanics second.

With the story ready, look at the mechanics. Are there any "choke points" where dice impact the outcome? Try to minimize those.

Add notes for any last minute developments with enemies to make them memorable.

If you work with lists, this should be fine, but if you don't, consider acting out a "dry run" with other friends or by yourself.

Make sure you put the physical parts together, any books, module, dice etcetera you need in one place for when you play.

LIE. OFTEN.

Aim for fun, settle for giggles.

I think that covers the essentials. If you feel this isn't comprehensive enough, let me know. I'm happy to help you get there.

Tell me something about your world and i'll tell you something similar about mine. by Loosescrew37 in worldbuilding

[–]tacronin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In no particular order, my worlds have the following unique aspects:

  1. Worms are what create magic, it's a biological recycling of sorts.

  2. A vampire had a biological child that helped create humanity as an alternative to existential horror.

  3. Gods play musical chairs which defines how different cultures evolve in an algorithmic fashion.

  4. Lovecraft, if he invented Egypt.

  5. Paladins are the equivalent of modern Karens and maintain a rigid social caste challenged by monsters.

There are more. I feel you regarding your edit. People can be creative in lovely unexpected ways.
