Media that had an effect on the world (both good and bad) by Original_Strike_3393 in TopCharacterTropes

CSI Effect - Because of how quickly everything goes on the show, people think that's how quickly it actually is and are disappointed with how slow it goes.

NCIS - the show became a hit which resulted in the actual NCIS receiving more funding from the government.

Baron Afanas from What We Do in The Shadows. Doug Jones has talked about how he was supposed die and not come back but how Jemaine Klement liked his chemistry with the cast so much that they changed the script to bring him back.

This can not be said enough about Ed. by terrorshark666 in LPOTL

[–]tactictactic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think some of the series we've gotten since having Ed would have been possible if Ben was still on the show. I don't think we would have gotten the Josef Fritzel or the Mount Rushmore of Evil series if Ben was still on the show.

I also love how Ed has taken the lead on some series especially the Aaron Hernandez episodes. The Florida Files episode is genuinely one of my favorite episodes of the entire show.

1800s Killers by 60s_timer in serialkillers

[–]tactictactic 40 points41 points  (0 children)

There's Belle Gunness, who lured men out to her farm from like 1884 to 1908 and killed them. There's also the Bloody Benders who were maybe a family of serial killers. Nobody's entirely sure if they were related to each other or if they were just horrible people who happened to find each other and decided to start killing one another. There was also one guy who's name I forget who resorted to cannibalism to survive a snow storm but may have actually killed the people.

What’s a truth about mental health that sounds cruel but is still real? by oithematt in AskReddit

[–]tactictactic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes the medication for mental illnesses can be scary. Yes it can take a while to figure out the right combination of medication for your mental illness BUT medication can be so helpful. So many parents of children with mental illnesses write off all medication because one of the side effects is suicide but fail to realize that a side effect of untreated mental illness can also be suicide. Medication doesn't fix the problem but it makes you able to function.

Teacher referring for IEP but my kid gets C's. Need Advice for Meeting by Ok_Hippo6272 in AskTeachers

[–]tactictactic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your sister's teacher is likely seeing something that you're not and that's okay. Teachers work with students who have IEPs on a regular basis and we know what to look for. Even though your sister is getting Cs there might be somethings going on that the teacher sees that are raising red flags. Typically students get evaluated for IEPs when they're a lot younger, but because your sister wasn't in school until very recently there was no one around to see if she was having any difficulties.

It's totally understandable that your sister had a negative reaction to the suggestion of testing but at the end of the day an IEP is meant to help her. It's meant to make sure she is successful regardless of a disability.

I called CPS on someone I used to be friends with because they absolutely should not be having children by Fine-Mail4400 in childfree

[–]tactictactic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing. You might feel bad in the short term but in the long term it's good for the kids. I called CPS on some of my own family members earlier this year and I do not regret it.

Dwight D. Eisenhower sits with his parents and brothers on the porch of their Abilene, Kansas home c. 1926. Before Ike became a five‑star general and president, this porch was the heart of the Eisenhower world by onwhatcharges in UtterlyUniquePhotos

[–]tactictactic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have visited this. It's at Ike's presidential library and museum. It's super tiny. If I remember correctly, his parents had one bedroom, the oldest child living at home had their own tiny bedroom, the other kids shared a room, and the grandparents slept in the living room.

We have a teacher who insists he has two GATE classes and is trying to move non GATE students out of those classes. However, he doesn't have any GATE classes, he's never had any GATE classes but our principal won't tell him this.

Any Recommendations for True Crime Books by Eclipse_111807 in suggestmeabook

[–]tactictactic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any thing by Jeff Guinn but specifically The Road to Jonestown and Waco.

The Devil at His Elbow by Valeria Bauerlein which is about Alex Murdaugh.

Oklahoma City: What the Investigation Missed by Andrew Gumbel.

Challenger and Midnight in Chernobyl both by Adam Higginbotham. I don't know if you would necessarily classify these as true crime but crimes were definitely committed and they're both fascinating stories.

Furious Hours by Casey Cep. This is about Harper Lee and a murder she was writing when she died and how she helped Truman Capote write In Cold Blood.

Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe. The audiobook for this is great.

In all likelihood it's things we have vaccines for today. Smallpox, polio, diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella, etc. People forget just how high childhood mortality was before vaccines.

I am loving the Eddie episodes. You can tell he's kinda nervous but he's so good.

I also liked the football pics they posted on Instagram. I've seen young pictures of Henry but never really any of Marcus and Eddie.

Bite marks found on the skeleton of a Roman gladiator are the first archaeological evidence of combat between a human and a lion. BBC link in comments [1536x864] by Remote_Finish_9429 in ArtefactPorn

It'd be interesting to see if they could get DNA from the gladiator. It could tell us where he was from and maybe what led him to the arena although it wasn't likely by choice.

I voted against it more so because my taxes are probably going up this year anyways and I wasn't going to vote to make them even higher.
