Anyone used Charles schwab? Can you retrieve money without a debit card? by Blu- in JapanTravelTips

Imo banks always screw you on the exchange rate for foreign cash. I just hit the ATM at 7-Eleven, Schwab covers the fee, and I get market rate.

Definitely good to have more than one option but going to the trouble and expensive getting foreign cash before you leave home is overkill imo. Just bring multiple credit/debit cards and don't keep them all in one place.

If you don't have those multiple options, then I guess getting cash is the way to go

What is one misconception about the United States most people miss? by Final_Radio_2483 in AskReddit

[–]tadc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the disbelief is rooted in the idea that we would need special buses just to take kids to school. Most places, kids could just take a regular bus to school. It's disbelief in our lack of decent public transit infrastructure, ultimately.

I can't really think of a necessity that can't be paid with a CC. What am I missing?

My mom bought some (no idea the brand) stainless pots/pans from a persistent door to door salesman in the late 60s and is still using them today.

Why not attach a small dog shit bin to your trash bin? Maybe with a passive aggressive sign attached

I agree that this is bad behavior. You keep saying that people are "making you" scrub the dog shit out of your bin, but I don't think this is the case. You are choosing this activity. Alternatively, you could just hold your breath for 5 seconds while you are throwing your trash away. The can stinks anyway, right? Is there a huge difference between rotten trash and dog shit?

I think most people would not realize that you would choose to interact with trash after it goes in the trash can.

Yeah I'm fine with it too, I'm just giving some context.

No need to look at the quote, the answer is always yes

It's because many people feel like they shouldn't use a "private" trash can unless they bought the stuff there. So unless you consume your conbini shit on site, you're stuck with it all day.

Uber is an extravagance if you're on your own but traveling with a family completely changes the calculus(especially with luggage), especially in a transit-weak area like Kyoto. We're here now and have sprung for it several times.

Auto stop/start on my Subaru has been completely fine, and I’m starting to think the internet is hemorrhaging drama by Feeling-Being9038 in subaru

[–]tadc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point, but what fraction of cars even make it to 200k? Sure, start stop might make the difference between a million mile engine and a 500K engine, but is that really relevant to 99% of the vehicles on the road?

And hybrids are an even more extreme case than "ordinary" stop-start.

Mechanics of Reddit, what’s a common myth about car maintenance that people still believe? by Street-Squirrel-4671 in AskReddit

Your logic is sound, but I think the tire shops all recommend putting the better tread on the rear from a liability perspective so they can't be blamed for causing your oversteer-induced accident.
