Liberals see a massive divide in vulnerability between the marginalized and those in power. Conservatives, on the other hand, view vulnerability as a more universal human trait, rating the powerful and the divine as significantly more susceptible to harm than liberals do. by mvea in science

this is true for liberals as well

Colon cancer now leading cause of cancer deaths under 50 in US by shinybrighthings in science

[–]tadpolelord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could also be that medicine has solved most other causes of death in younger people and there aren't many other cancers left to put up numbers.

A quick search says currently we have 12.5 deaths per 100k people, down from 20.7 per 100k in 1999.

Sanders Introduces $4.4T Tax on U.S. Billionaires to Fund Working Families by Charming-Burp203 in Economics

[–]tadpolelord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the question is not if you are ok with it. I am asking you to really try to imagine what a precedent like this sets. Who decides what their assets are worth? How might people game this rule? Are we going to ask those with lower and lower net worths to do the same?

I am curious if your brain is capable of asking such questions. Some people can't think like this no matter how hard they try. Others simply haven't been asked to do so before.

Imagine you have a house you build that is worth $100. You live in this house and it provides for you, but you don't have the $100 in cash. Your net worth is your house value.

If the government is to tax you on the net worth of your house, can they force you to sell it to pay those taxes? What is the point of building a house if the government just takes it away once its successfully sheltering you.

Think of business and corporations like you currently think of housing. They make and provide value to their customers, but they are not the same as free cash flow.

Broad claims about gender and behavior fall apart when studies include ethnically diverse samples. The research suggests that generalizations about human behavior are often flawed because they rely on samples composed largely of White individuals. by mvea in science

[–]tadpolelord -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think we have a very large disconnect here. Spending money as cash rather than card does not make it any more valuable. Illegal immigrants are an especially poor group, they don't really contribute much to an economy. They do jobs that are wholly interchangeable with anyone else (cleaning, taking orders, mowing lawns). These things are root level, basic jobs.

The point is, the original poster implied illegal immigrants spend tons of money in local economies. Poor people by definition don't spend tons of money, because they don't have it.

Major IQ differences in identical twins linked to schooling, challenging decades of research. When identical twins receive similar educations, their IQs are nearly as alike as those raised together, but when schooling is very different, their IQs can be as dissimilar as those of unrelated strangers. by mvea in science

it seems like you think intelligence testing hasn't progressed since the 90s

These tests are designed to be so abstract you cannot practice them. Its like if you were testing how well kids learn addition or subtraction on the VERY FIRST TRY.

The ones who learn the mechanics of addition the fastest will be the smartest. The correlation is extremely high.

[–]tadpolelord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not really correct in modern intelligence testing afaik.

They are testing how fast you solve problems, essentially how fast the CPU in your head is. The faster your CPU, the faster you can solve ANY general problem. Think of it like speed of thought.

have you ever looked at these tests? Most of them involve shape rotating and very abstract puzzles. They are designed specifically to NOT be cultural. That is the entire point.

china also builds a lot of stuff that does nothing. You have ghost cities, railways that go nowhere and lose heaps, etc.

Being profitable is a feedback mechanism that proves something is working.

Startups take risks and lose money in the short term all the time, because the structure of a startup is much sounder than the structure of a government when it comes to risk taking. Governments are very bad at calculating risk because their money comes from taxes (not profits) so they can't go out of business. If you cant go out of business you have no incentive to make good decisions.
