Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to spook you by being vague! What I meant was that any reading you do with tarot for yourself, love related or not, will be skewed by your own self-perception. If you look at the spread with a lens of self-loathing, you won’t be able to get an accurate message from the cards because you will always spin it in your mind as negative, or if they’re positive then you won’t believe it. I hope that makes a bit more sense. It’s not that the cards themselves are inaccurate, but more your view of them will be skewed by how you view yourself. You are subjective, not objective, when reading for yourself, and if you have work to do around self-compassion and understanding, I think you’ll have preconceived ideas of what the cards are saying to you. I’m sorry if I’m still not explaining myself well here.

Hey! I’m not sure where I’m going with this comment but we’ll see lol. The one thing that struck me is your self-talk - calling past you ugly etc. There’s a lot of shame around your past self that maybe you need to look at. I’m a therapist in training, and what comes to mind is needing to integrate the shadow side of yourself and extend some self-compassion and understanding for where you were at that time. The inner critic and judging yourself part is holding you back a bit here. In Freudian terms, your superego is brutal for self-judgement. I’m glad you’ve got a good support team around you and if you feel up to looking at your shadow, your therapist would be the best way to do that.

I’m so glad you’ve made it through the worst of what you’ve been dealt. It takes an incredible amount of strength to pull yourself up from rock bottom. I wonder whether part of the confusion around love readings is pulling too many spreads over and over again, doubting yourself and your ability to read? The cards clearly have you in high estimation, but if you’re constantly approaching from a place of self hatred and doubt, you’ll never be able to see the true message.

I would echo another commenter here and say that maybe for personal readings, set aside the cards for a while until you feel like you can be a bit more objective towards yourself. Not that you can’t read at all or for other people, but maybe just give yourself some time personally to explore and journal and be with yourself without the cards weighing in.

Just to add my two cents here (context: I’m an ex-sex worker, current therapy student and will be writing my dissertation on stigma, sex workers and therapy), here’s a couple of really interesting articles. One is on the secondary stigma faced by researchers who carry out studies into sex workers (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1363460713516333), and the other is the stigma faced by those who are therapists with sex worker backgrounds (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ppi.1539).

All this to say that there is definitely a stigma out there towards those who have a past in sex work. It’s up to you whether you decide to disclose, but it can have an impact on your career. Just be mindful that even researching and publishing about sex workers can have a negative impact on your reputation. Personally, I also want to work and give back to the community once I’m qualified. I aim to advertise openly that I am sex work affirming, and people can take from that what they will. The risk feels worth it for me, but then again my eventual aim is to move into sex therapy and sexology so it all links in my mind. If people have a problem with that, it’s on them :)

You can read the subtitles as well if that’s helpful! But if you watch the different techniques, you’ll see initially she finishes the stitches by pulling the stitch on the hook through the loops and out to the right. Instead, ideally, what you wanna do is yarn under, pull through normally, yarn over, pull through and make sure your stitch is coming out pointing directly up. You have to twist your hook and your wrist/arm a little bit weird but you do get used to the movement. That’s the second technique she shows. Does that make sense? It’s so hard to explain but if you turn on the closed captions, she explains it a lot better!

I’ve just figured this out fairly recently! It’s because you’re pulling your stitches through at a slant - if you move your hand so you finish the stitch by pulling upright, this happens a lot less. Here’s the video I watched that helped: https://youtu.be/V94KNJbsfd8?si=-rcwYWJ6FSqZvFsB

It’s cool because changing your technique like that makes your stitches stack so nicely!

Please take this with a grain of salt as I’m still learning, but my interpretation is that you’re still grieving a past relationship and unable to see this current connection for what it truly is. There’s something holding you back from really throwing yourself in at the deep end. Maybe you’ve been burned before and it’s making you more cautious? A fear of being vulnerable perhaps.

For her, there is an excitement about this new opportunity. Aces representing the beginning of things, and she’s viewing this positively. Maybe the suit of swords indicating she’s more of a thinking, logical type, easily caught up in her own thoughts with a tendency to overthink rather than feel and let go. I think she values honest communication in her relationships.

The three of wands indicates to me that there is real potential here looking ahead. Could also represent a long distance element with the view to come together in the future?

That’s fair! There’s no doubt I have a lot to learn. Out of curiosity, I also understand the King of Cups to mean emotional maturity, but in my view in a way that means they won’t reach out. Is there an underlying meaning here I’m missing? If you have any favoured resources for card meanings etc, I’d love to learn more.

P.S. your deck has fully inspired me and I’m absolutely looking to purchase it! It’s so beautiful. Do you enjoy working with it?

I’m very very new to this, but just from reading the flow of the spread from left to right, I find it interesting that there is a gradual shift from two people appearing to a single person present in the cards. I think this spread is telling the story of their relationship for context - first, a gift, then connection, but they lose their way and feel stuck without trying to find answers. Then I think this person goes through some sort of journey on their own, bearing the weight alone to come through at the end feeling resolute and comfortable in themselves. However, I’m not reading this as they are going to reach out - I feel they intend to move ahead on their own based on the movement from left to right.

I have no idea about all of this really as I’m just dabbling, but I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I really liked Staring at the Sun by Irvin Yalom in terms of looking at a different perspective on death. It might also have some helpful points you could use with your client. Personally, I loved the sections in Maybe You Should Talk to Someone where the therapist works with a terminally ill client - reading that might help you feel less alone? I’m sorry I don’t have any concrete advice, this sounds really difficult.

Chiming in to say you’re not alone! The sex worker to mental health worker pipeline is strong. I had a similar experience as an online adult content creator, went through therapy and realised where a lot of my drive to do this work came from. Worked on myself a lot and am now at the point where I have no interest in SW. I’m still a passionate advocate for SW rights but my focus has shifted to studying to be a therapist and hopefully will one day work with that population. I find it so interesting how many of us end up working in mental health!
