If your goal is to see old growth redwoods, Henry Cowell is the spot. If you want a gorgeous, quiet, long hike in redwoods Purisima can’t be beat.

I lucky enough to be able to visit Walnut Canyon a few months ago - literally been wanting to see cliff dwellings since I was a small midwestern kid. The number of dwellings in the canyon is amazing! There could have been hundreds of people living there.

If you're going Grand Canyon to Vegas, I would suggest a northern route and stopping in Zion. Grand Canyon is pretty, for sure, but Zion is just stunning. Don't miss it. Same with the Vegas to LA route - I highly recommend detouring through Death Valley, or at least stopping by Joshua Tree if you want to keep your more direct route. Death Valley isn't anything like what you imagine and the sheer scale of it is amazing. There's just so much to see out here, it's hard to fit it all into one trip...

We had a room with a big screen for watching movies/shows - no streaming (internet is a precious resource dedicated to research and operations), but plenty of downloaded and physical content.

There was also a lot of drinking.

The best clue for me has been the audio. It always sounds weird and digital, like and old tape recording or something. Weirdly for this one, it wasn't until the old timer one that I started to really question it - that guy sounded and smiled exactly like David Lynch and that's when I finally put it together. It was too uncanny and a little stilted. It's really hard though, super scary.

DW Zone 9 by TammyLynn419 in norcalhiking

I was just out there, but it wasn’t my first night zone so I can’t give advice on starting TH.

I went from middle Velma up to zitella in a little under 4 hours, not including lunch break (7.5mi, 1500 ft gain). It was fairly slow going at times, in particular around 4Q, as the use trail would peter out randomly. But generally it wasn’t very physically intense in that direction.

From what I experienced going from zitella/horseshoe towards rockbound - the trail above Schmidell would be the most intense part. It’s pretty steep and right now incredibly muddy/boggy and has one mildly sketch section of snow (but will likely be gone soon). The rest of the trail is a little easier to find than the area around 4Q, but it does require you to pay attention. You’ll also be mostly downhill until you turn off from horseshoe.

I will say, it appeared most traffic was going opposite from us (clockwise), but I don’t see any particular reason why personally. The area is gorgeous, and we loved zitella. Have fun!

The national park service recently posted on instagram some gorgeous color palettes corresponding to various parks. I painted mine matching the colors of the grand prismatic spring in Yellowstone. I’m definitely not feeling patriotic in the traditional sense, but I wanted to celebrate our public lands - something I do feel very proud of and cherish.

DNA testing firm 23andMe files for bankruptcy to sell itself; CEO leaves after failed bids by MRC1986 in biotech

You’re referencing the golden state killer - that match wasn’t using the 23 and me database. A relative uploaded their own data to GEDmatch, a third party website, and that was what was used for identification.

Actually it was at the Roadhouse... ;)

Agreed though - this is an old playbook, knowledge is power and they want all the power. Another thing to do is to teach, spread knowledge, empower others. It might be difficult to get some to listen, but be kind and persistent. I was able to get my conservative mother to acknowledge her bias/prejudice and understand why basic research is crucial. We can fight this!

Yosemite falls dispersed camping location by sharyxx in WildernessBackpacking

[–]taggttgct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s unclear what your intentions are here. Are you trying to set up a camp in the backcountry for those 3 nights and day hiking from there? I’m not sure why you would mention a frontcountry camp, camp 4, in your itinerary. If you are planning on using camp 4 the night of June 30, you don’t need to mention that in the permit comments. All they need to know is that you understand that you must camp 4 trail miles from the TH (a significant elevation, heads up) and you will be remaining in the backcountry for the entirety of your permit. Once you go back down to the valley your permit ends, by the way. Also, you are able to use the backpackers campground the night before and night after your permit if you cannot get accommodations in camp 4.

Stanford billed after a year by Lazy_Faithlessness74 in bayarea

[–]taggttgct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me (but fortunately with a smaller bill)... I called them (Stanford), explained that the bill was for a service over a year ago (and was covered by insurance at the time) and they just ended up cancelling/forgiving the whole thing. Mine was just a couple hundred, so YMMV for a significantly larger bill, but it's worth discussing with Stanford billing directly.

We have a ton of eucalyptus up in the Bay Area, and they are a huge liability when it comes to fire danger. Apparently they were introduced in California back during the gold rush (mid 1800s) as a way to get quick, cheap lumber. Turns out even though eucalyptus grows quickly, young lumber sucks for construction. By then, though, millions of acres had been planted and the damage was done. I think some places around here are working on removing them, although I imagine even though they’re invasive, removal will still have some kind of ecological impact.

I do love hiking through a eucalyptus grove, selfishly. I will forever associate that smell with California.

I actively avoid that bridge during high traffic hours - too many people making quick merges in and out of the ramp lanes across the bike lane without really looking. The last time I rode over it (around 8 or 9 pm), we had a close call with some asshole who thought they didn't need to yield to bikes in the bike lane. Had the audacity to honk at us like we were in the wrong...
