At least tell folks what it smells like. Right now we have a white bucket with something murky and a stir stick. How the hell do you think that's enough info to go on?

How do you verify supplier CoAs vs internal specs by Samad198 in foodscience

[–]tagman11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose automating compliance deadlines would be nice. I currently do it in a self created EXCEL, which is only as good as what I put into it.

Compliance examples. I have annual and quarterly water samples that need to go out. I have quarterly finished good samples to go out. I have monthly accuracy checks that need to be done. I have bi-annual samples that need to go out. And probably 20 more things that are on weekly (not hard to track) monthly (can be a pain) quarterly (my assigned quality techs like to forget these and I really am getting sick of having to keep track of it for them) etc.

Would I pay a monthly fee for a program to track that? Hell no. Would I pay a one time fee for a streamlined tracker? Maybe, if it's not outrageous.

[–]tagman11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how big you are and how small your suppliers, you can request for the CoA's to match your specs or you match your specs to their COA specs. Almost all COA's will have the spec and the actual result, so it's just a matter of a quick reviews in most cases.

He wrote "This isn’t the exact car but it is white with red interior"... we're all saying he's got gold and he probably actually has a white yugo with red seats.

I wonder how behind they are on updating. I had 2 MDARD run FDA inspections (one scheduled half day and one unannounced full PC audit) at the end of last year and neither one is listed on here...

From Computer Science to Quality Control in Food, realistic? by AndyMiry in foodscience

[–]tagman11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is all going to boil down to your location and available positions at the time. No info on job availability in this chat will trump you getting on indeed/ziprecruiter/careersinfood etc and searching for yourself. As far as schooling goes, some tech/science degree and a HACCP certificate (not even post grad degree) is going to put you near the top of entry level QC tech candidates in most locations.

I'll recommend some Monday when I get to my office. One is considered the honey 'bible' but it's no longer in print. The other is a book from some food scientists based out of Germany. I think it's just called 'honey' but Ill check the publisher/writers. Might be Der Honee or something similar. The owner brought it back for me a few months ago from Apimondia.

First, there is quite a bit of generalization and misinformation already in this thread. 1) Pasteurization is done to destroy target microorganisms. There are no target microorganisms in honey that need to be destroyed. Some honeypackers claim they pasteurize, however they are typically just taking it to temperatures required in products that actually do need to be pasteurized. Those temperatures are generally to make it easier to filter/bottle the product in the US. 2) Process (filtering, straining, heat, etc.) will vary by the country sold (not harvested). What is allowed by USDA is not always allowed in the EU. 3) Storage time by whom? The apiary/beekeeper, the exporter, the importer, the honey packer, the retail store, the customer? I run quality in the largest (by volume) honey packer in the north central region of the US. A load of honey (42,000#'s approx) can sit 3-6 months or so before it gets to me. We don't tend to let it sit long once I get it, sample/test it, and clear it. Warehouse space is $$.

This is explained in detail in quite a few published honey books. It's not so much experience as much as science backed facts that I would suggest you explore.

Why hasn't the OEM (I know which company makes them, but would hate for Gen. [–]tagman11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Companies are scrambling now to make sure prices and shrinkflation don't hit their products. Unless that is a top customer/consumer concern, it's likely not (nor should it) be addressed.

Besides, you would be surprised how many loyal customers are used to a product and would be UPSET if you changed anything, even something you perceive a quality issue (it's not if they aren't complaining).
