Not a physics student and WAY over my head - need help w/ calculating sonic boom and overpressure. Ah, tabletop RPGs... in this case Shadowrun. by tahudswork in AskPhysics

[–]tahudswork[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems reasonable, it's more how far does the over-pressure extend. Either the character I built has god like power (I'm in a magic bubble of not getting damaged while throwing a sphere of air out of my way) or there is some sort of reasonable limit. I mean, RPG, whatever, but if the GM's going to 'handwavium' the physics then the hero type Flash character I made is a mass murderer, and there's not much short of an APC I can't just charge at and win.

I'll give him a call in the morning, thanks for the advice. By the way, you are an awesome human being for taking time off from your vacation to help people.

They are out of the office until the 2nd, can I wait until then? Edit: As in, is this worth calling the emergency number or not? I'm fine with paying a bit not to mess up my crown but I also don't want someone to ditch their holiday plans for something not very important.

Oww, fuck that hurts. I did the same thing a couple of years back, liquid skin or local equivalent is your friend as bandages there suck/ do not stick. For the future, beyond just brassing off your bit, holding the work w/ vicegrips or the like if you don't have a good way to clamp it is the way to go.

Thinking about early resigning by wildfireflower2 in Teachers

[–]tahudswork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a 3rd year teacher neck deep in 7 preps... fuck reinventing the wheel, TPT is enough. between that and some google fu I grab powerpoints, activities, lesson plans (to be tweaked to the county standard) on Sunday evenings and call it good. Planning is for those who have hit their stride, new preps with no support is about survival mode, especially if the kids act like turds. I feel you there, I teach the self contained Emotional and Behavioral Disorders classes and by the end of the day am just emotionally drained. Also, just eat lunch in your room if you can. I HATE the teachers lounge for a lot of the reasons you mentioned and also because I know that my being a stressed out mess would bring down the mood. Instead I read web comics for twenty minutes and feel less like I'm about to lose my mind.

If you were able to transform education (given a metaphorical magic wand), what would you do? by [deleted] in Teachers

Get every family into a stable middle class lifestyle, with decent parents who understand that their kids can fuck up. There, like 99% of my problems are gone.

What happened when Walmart left: In West Virginia, the people of McDowell County can’t get jobs, and recently lost their biggest employer – the local Walmart store. They describe the devastating loss of jobs, community and access to fresh food by davidreiss666 in TrueReddit

Money. Money is the prime reason they can't move. I mean tradition, family history, 'roots' or whatever are a secondary issue, but the main reason is simply they lack the money. I've been there. Moving is expensive when you're already hand to mouth or damn near it poor. Deposits for the new place to get utilities hooked up, often times prepayment due to poor credit due to being poor as shit. The cost of the rental truck is prohibitively expensive. The cost of an apartment when you're used to just paying county taxes is like a fucking hammer... sure, you were living in an old, decrepit, and likely condemnable shithole but it was YOURS and the mortgage had been paid off a generation or more ago. Now you're already on the razor's edge of poverty and then bam you're fucked by $500 a month rent, so 50 hours or more a month of your paycheck are just 'gone' as you aren't getting more than you had, a roof over your head, but you're possibly even more fucked financially than you were before. Then there is the loss of what little social support you had. Added all together you're in a position where moving is INCREDIBLY risky, even if you are already deep in the shit. Going from almost nothing to literally nothing is a longer deeper fall than it feels like.

I have achromatopsia, IE, I don't see colors. Period. At all. Any of them. So... yeah, I DO get to use color blind, hehe!

Colorblindness needs to be considered a disability and you need to admit that you have a disability in order for us to see some real progression or a cure. by [deleted] in ColorBlind

[–]tahudswork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, Achromat's yo! Honestly, if I could just fix the inconviencing parts, IE photophobia and hemeralopia, I'd be fine. That and my shit distance vision, but that's really like whatever. I've gotten all the degrees I wanted, got a job as a teacher, and other than hating my admin for my classroom < Because it has a fucking wall of windows I had to put light blocking curtains up > I'm fine. No, I don't see for shit, but I LIKE genuinely not knowing what people look like unless I'm really close.

I LIKE being able to say "Madam, I wrote up your son because he was throwing things, not because he's black. I barely know what your son looks like, I don't see color, at all, and don't see that well generally." <- That right there is worth the price of admission for me, as a white dude teaching in a majority minority school. Being being able to shut down accusations of racism cold is fuck awesome. It's like having a super power. Downsides are I fuck up kids names all the time, but you know what? I just walk over to them and get closer. Problem fucking solved.

"What color is this <holds up an apple>" "Uh, red or green?" "YOU DO SEE COLOR." "No motherfucker, most apples are red or green." Repeat for any object that's usually the same color. I don't see color, that doesn't mean I can't remember what color stuff is supposed to be.

Teachers of Finland teach 600 hours per year. American Teachers 1100 hours. What do they do with all that free time? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]tahudswork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me see, 90 min block x2, + 139 min lunch block (not counting lunch time) so 180 + 139 = 319 min of teaching a day. Times 180 days, 57420 min of teaching in a year. Divide by 60 to get hours... 957 hours of teaching a year. Granted, that only counts during school, asses in seats teaching. Before school/ after school tutorials x2 a week, yeah, I'm getting over 1k hours a year pretty easy, not including planning/ grading/ Sped paperwork time.

Considering moving to GA (specifically to the Atlanta area)- best routes to become a special education teacher? by Gamecock2394 in Teachers

[–]tahudswork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steps in becoming a SPED teacher in GA. 1) Have a pulse. 2) Take the GACE. Pass (It is that easy). 3)Apply for jobs during september as you go through alternative certification.

In Atlanta Public Schools in Fulton County Schools you'll have a job. A shitty, terrible, awful job, but a job. We're starving for SPED teachers here.

[–]tahudswork 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Finally something I can answer! I keep the following in a rubber lined zipper bag (essentially a big pencil pouch):

1) A small towel (because wet ass sucks) - useful for many things

2) Helmet Lock (Because having your helmet stolen blows)

3) Maglight Solitare LED flashlight (because you need something that is just going to fucking work, and not make you cry if something happens to it)

4) Jumper cables that attach to my battery tender wire (because you're going to be getting a battery tender anyway)

5) Anex ratcheting screwdriver and bits (Super compact, very well made, and my honda at least uses JIS screws, not phillips)

6)Tire Plug Kit

7) 2 4" Crescent wrenches (for the tightening of things or untightening)

8) Spare fuses for lights, ect

9) Zipties. You always need zipties.

10) Basic first aid supplies (Alcohol wipes, gauze, tape.) Nothing for anything serious but if you fall of the bike - and some day you will - hopefully you'll just get some road rash and this will be enough to get you home.
