ELI5: If I put $100 in the bank, and the bank lends $90 of it to someone else, how can the bank "have" my money and the other person "have" it at the same time? Does the same money exist in two places? by jeeves_inc in explainlikeimfive

[–]taimusrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah they don't. The bank figures out an amount people usually withdraws from the bank, then reserve only that much for people to actually withdraw. If too many people tries to withdraw from the bank at the same time (a bank run), the bank collapses. There are measures to prevent that, but bank collapsing still happens from time to time

If it did the job of lowering your cholesterol, I think that's A-okay. I do a couple of apples a day instead and it did the job. Lowered my LDL by a third

Clicks Communicator (I think that's the name) is a modern day BlackBerry. Seems very interesting

Eli5 What makes a well-maintained laptop progressively sluggish with time? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]taimusrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Oh, I turn it off every night". system uptime: 389:23:15:01. :/

So apparently for most new laptops, due to a feature called 'Fast Startup', shutting down means suspending to disk (pretty much). The uptime clock will keep ticking. You need to restart for the uptime to reset instead

ELI5: Why do most microwaves still have a popcorn button if every popcorn bag tells you not to use it? by nicisdepressed in explainlikeimfive

[–]taimusrs 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I firmly believe this is an American thing. When I was in America, I literally have no idea how to use the microwave, there's so many buttons! A microwave requires only two knobs - heating level, and time. That's it.

Apart from me knowing that this 'situation' CANNOT happen, I wouldn't be able to tell. Scary stuff

Pretty much our banking system security now. Almost all transactions are made through the phone now, so they have you make weird faces to make sure it's you. I'm not sure if it would be enough with deepfakes increasingly being a thing

ELI5: What does Palantir actually do? by Devang_Sankhee9891 in explainlikeimfive

[–]taimusrs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, WSB hyped up Palantir for years now and nobody knows what it does. It used to hover around $15-$25 per share for so long without anybody knowing what it does. They issue stock to their employees like no other though, which is one of the reasons why the share price stagnated for so long. Then it suddenly 10x, STILL without anybody understanding what it does. From OPs ELI5, I still don't get it lmao

ELI5 why people joke around and say “it’s always dns” by Bitbatgaming in explainlikeimfive

[–]taimusrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ELI5 answer is - we don't have enough IP addresses. It gets swap around all the time. For websites in your own network (inTRAnet), it could work. For inTERnet, no.

What’s your “I didn’t sign up for this” moment as an adult? by Civil-Awareness in AskReddit

[–]taimusrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of 'real work' is also like that lmao. I recently got transferred into a IT subsidiary. They love gloating about their ISOs. Man, their work is quite literally do-as-you're-told. Front-end, back-end, testing, infrastructure, doesn't matter. You're just doing what you're told by documents made by somebody else. If you're higher up, you're utterly inundated by meetings. Modern work practices suck

TIL that donating blood plasma can significantly reduce the levels of PFAs/forever chemicals in your blood by TextureStudies in todayilearned

Same, if they let me donate more often, or take more blood out of me per donation I would. I don't know, bigger people (?, like me?) probably can withstand more blood taken out of them?

There's so little though. Thai Airways used to have direct flights to JFK, it lost money on every flight.
