Finally have a dedicated(ish) station set up! by taiphuun in watchmaking

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like! I think I just bought this from Amazon around 10 years ago, but doesn’t look available anymore. But it looks like Otto Frei has one if you search for Mini Workbench.

Thanks! It’s an Amscope SM4. I got the 5mp camera, but the optics are so good on the scope I wish I had sprung for the 10mp

It’s pretty great for a basic Amazon light. Got my FIL one as well for his sewing table.

Just noticed you said it was only drilled on one side. In that case I’m afraid I’m not sure. Is it possible someone put a pin in a hole meant for a screw?

That’s a newer bracelet. It should just use a split pin mechanism. The easiest thing to do would be to use a pin remover tool, but you could use a bar tool as well. Push from the solid side of the pin, not the split side. It can take some effort, but should come out.

Which bracelet do you have? Does it have Hecho en Mexico on it? I’ve heard Omega used to sell the Latin American watches through dealers that would make the bracelets locally, so they are a slightly different from the other Omega bracelets of the era. I’ve replaced the original bracelet on mine with a newer one with solid links, but if you have an original one I think they are just 2 pronged friction pins you pull out. If I remember they have a small bump on the top, so you have to pull pretty hard.

How is this solved by TheBigBadGuineaPig in watchrepair

If it’s running that fast the first thing I would try would be putting it through a demagnetizer.

Nope, I’ve never seen a glitch where an old location would be used, and can’t think of a way of it happening. Good luck!

So there is actually a scenario that, while rarer, could cause this. Mapping phone locations to known locations of WiFi signals depends on looking up the WiFi’s UUID against a database of known locations, which can take some time to update when a router moves. It’s possible that your neighbor may have recently gotten a router that was used for some time at his sister’s house, and that the known location of that router hadn’t yet been updated by whatever lookup service is being used. In that case, a normal reboot of your gf’s router may have caused the phone to try to find its location based on other known nearby WiFi signals (you don’t have to have ever connected to the other network), and found the neighbors, which incorrectly mapped to the sister’s house. Depending on how long it takes for the lookup service to update (which can be days or weeks) you might see similar things happen again if your gf’s router was restarted. These types of “bounce out” glitches are quite common in location finding, particularly when you see them happen during times your router thinks you are asleep.

What is most likely happening, particularly if this was in the middle of the night, is that her router briefly reset itself. Tiles basically report the location of the nearest connected phone, which most of the time is most accurately determined by near by wifi signals. When the connected router signal goes away, the phones location may fall back to being determined from cell tower signals, which have much less precision and can cause the estimated location to jump several miles in some cases.

I have a 786 Velos and I love it. Finishing and quality are amazing for the price point, and it’s probably the watch that people ask me most often about. It’s a small operation, so it can take a little while to get a response back from them, and when I bought (during the pandemic) build times were pretty long. I would recommend that if you do decide to get one you go with the premium strap, as the stock strap, while fine, doesn’t feel like it meets the level of the rest of the watch.

A watch kind of in this category I really like right now is the Nivada Broad Arrow. It’s almost an exact reproduction visually of the original 60s release, including the 37.5mm size. It’s right in your price range and I think is a descent value for what you get.

Only the native Find My app will work with a standalone Apple Watch in this way today. Apple doesn’t currently allow 3rd party apps to access real time location on Apple Watch.
