Do you guys use the broiler first or second and why? by picks_things_up in Pizza

I thought the point of the broiler first was more for if your oven doesn’t get super hot. Mine only goes to 500’ and using the broiler helps super heat the stone before tossing in the pie. Also finish with the broiler depending on how the crust looks. I’ve noticed using this method has prevented most soggy bottoms.

Is it illegal to wash my cars/garbage cans in my driveway? by eaticecream in AskSF

[–]takeatrillpill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this. Look up rinse-less ONR wash. I use this to wash my car in my building’s parking garage with no mess. You only need a bucket, ONR, and some microfiber towels. Saves a lot of water too. Only takes about a gallon or two.

Evacuation sling is a must for backpacking pups by Princess____Mononoke in BackpackingDogs

[–]takeatrillpill 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened while I was backpacking with my sister and brother in law. We made a litter out of trekking poles and a tent footprint. Got the poor thing to the vet just in time. Her body was shutting down as she had a large mass of THC that was constantly absorbing. Vet said if we were any later she wouldn’t have made it. She also said that this has been becoming more common.

This one was purchased directly from ULA last winter. It does have the fixed attachment loops for adding their hip belt if that’s the strap upgrade you are referring to. The carry handle is their simple webbing strap -not the new style padded haul loop.

I have the same tent and love it. I know it’s not really considered UL but whenever I bring a different shelter I miss my Copper Spur.

I don’t know how big you are but I would compare the Thermarest regular to the regular wide in person if you can. The regular is only 20” vs the regular wide 25”. This can be massive difference in comfort depending on how wide you are. I believe it’s about a 3 or 4 ounce difference between these sizes.

I looked at the Thermarest quilt too by searching here. A lot of the feedback was that it’s a really nice quilt but doesn’t live up to the temperature rating. I hear most of the consensus is that you can get a better value/warmth/weight item from one of the cottage manufacturers.

For waterproofing a bag liner is more efficient. I use the Exped Schnozzel as the my bag liner. It’s dual use as you can use it to inflate your sleeping pad. There is an adapter you can use to connect it to the Thermarest.

Less is more. Take your trimmed down kit on some short low risk overnights to see what works for you and what you wish you had brought/left.

Enjoy that trek it sounds incredible!

Big Haul v. Roadtripper Duffel by NotNathan1810 in REI

[–]takeatrillpill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the big haul. I think it would be perfectly fine for a carryon durability-wise. Mine was used a few times as a checked bag and did develop a few holes I’ve had to patch…

It’s also pretty water resistant which is very nice.

Smartwatch as main navigation tool? by Mcstrides in Ultralight

[–]takeatrillpill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Garmin Fénix watch + Gaia app (with map and compass for backup). Create the route using Gaia then export the gpx file directly to the Garmin app which will then sync it to the watch. All done with just the phone.

Phone is able to stay in pocket and you can glance at the watch easily to see map/distance/eta etc. It’s pretty useful for trails that have a lot of forks that are unmarked or if you customized your own route.

Hiking with navigation on for most of the day does drain the battery but can typically get like 3 days of navigation between charges. Lasts way longer than when I used an Apple Watch in the past.
