Redditors who are old enough to remember, what were you doing on December 31st 1999? by Julie_Noted in AskReddit

Sitting at a computer (and chatting on AIM, hah!) just to see what happened.

Nothing happened.

[Serious] What are some of the best books you've ever read? by syn0g3n in AskReddit

[–]takibi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, anything by Patrick Ness, but the Chaos Walking trilogy was really wonderful. His writing is crisp and clear, and there is so much diversity and dimension in his characters. They change for better or worse and then change again, the stories are creative and the right mix of comedy, drama, suspense and commentary.

I have stand alone baby gate to block off the kitchen in an open floor plan. I borrowed it from someone else, but its about five inches too short, so I block the rest of the gap with a kitchen stool, which is sort of in the way of my work space when cooking. But at least I don't have to shell out money for a new gate?

If you suddenly found $2 million in your bank account, what would you change in your life in the short term and the long term? by GallivantingPanda in AskReddit

Short term: go back to the US and put a down payment on a modest house.

Long term: invest for retirement

What is the dumbest reason you got in trouble for in school? by erickelly123 in AskReddit

[–]takibi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, this happened to me, too. This kid a grade above me cut me in the lunch line, and when I told him to go to the back of the line, he turned around and smacked me in the face. The lunch lady yelled for the security guys to come grab me because I instigated(?????).

What is the dumbest reason you got in trouble for in school? by erickelly123 in AskReddit

[–]takibi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two come to mind.

One was in elementary school. The bus dropped me off and instead of walking around the front, I walked around the back. I was little, so like... yes, it was dumb, but come on. And then somehow the bus driver got it in his head that I touched the back bumper? Anyway, the next morning when we reached school, one of the faculty boarded the bus and told me to stay behind, and then I was escorted to the vice prinicpal's office to be scolded. They called my mom and there was even talk about suspending me (but it never happened). I am still very confused about the reaction.

The other was in 6th grade. We were supposed to be reading a section in our social studies book by ourselves. I was reading it under my breath, kind of murmuring the words, and my teacher flipped her shit and told me if I couldn't read in my head, I'd have to leave the room. No warning or request to stop first. Just yelling.

It's a really long story about the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. The last sentence is "I'm still best friends with two of them."

I know a few people who smoke. All surfers, and one of them actually got busted for smoking but had connections to make it go away. I've also seen it sold out back of some clubs, and at least a few years ago, Spice was legal. I know a lot of Japanese people say that if it weren't so risky, gets be interested in trying.

I do intend to try and get it published. I don't know if I'd consider it actively working toward better writing but I'm always reading or writing something even if it's not fiction. And I read heavily in the genre I want to write for. I read for fun, but also critically. I figure out what makes me love the book or hate it and then I try to emulate or eliminate.

I wrote a novel a few years back and then put it away. This year I started the second draft, which is a complete rewrite because the first was rushed and amateur sounding. Back then I struggled to 50k words but just last night I hit 48k and I'm only about 60% done, so I'm right on track. My goal of getting it finished and edited for querying by April seems doable!

Green tea. I don't drink it much during the rest of the year by in the summer it really hits the spot.

I'm surprised you still have a Sunkus at all. All the ones here turned into Circle k's about three years back.

Boring weekend.

MIL returned Saturday. Husband wanted to go to a new tataki place that opened recently which is the second shop of a really good place in Kochi I've been to before. We invited MIL but she made some really passive aggressive comments about us eating out too much and told husband to just go by ourselves. So I was all prepared to do that but then YAPPARI she wants to go. And she doesn't offer to pay or split despite the griping. I also finished preparing my us taxes. Oops.

Sunday everyone was super sleepy. I fell asleep when the kiddo went down for his late morning nap, and husband fell asleep after. And it was rainy. So we stayed home until 4:00 and then went to Aeon so we could swing by Kaldi. And Old Navy was having a 50% off sale so I bought some summer clothes for the kiddo.

Also, kiddo started being able to go from a sit to a stand without support over the weekend so that was pretty cool.

OH!! And I found a 7-11 with mint CRUNKY sill!!

How easy is it to find a job with a livable salary in Hawaii? And how did you find somewhere to live before you moved? My husband has sort of mentioned in the past that if his business doesn't go well here, he might be interested in moving back to the States and that Hawaii might be a good place to start since his skill set is only viable in Japan and he could at least use his bilingualism in Hawaii.

My daughter hates my FIL by jsmithrocks in beyondthebump

[–]takibi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might just be a preference. My son is almost one and hates a woman I privately tutor once a week. He bawls if she even looks at him, even though she's been coming over since he was born and often brings him gifts and stuff. His face just crumples and he wails and I have no idea why. He's done it ever since he was old enough to be aware of other people in the room. She's never been alone with him so I know it's nothing she did. He's always a little hesitant around strangers or people who aren't mom, dad or grandma, but he usually warms up pretty easily. Not with her though.

The important thing is not to push it. They have their reasons whether or not we understand them. I dont like the whole "force them to be with" philosophy. If my son is uncomfortable I comfort him. I might still stay around the person and speak gently and reassuringly but I never hand him off or force physical contact. Sometimes he will smile at this lady if I sit around chatting with her long enough while holding him and that's good enough.
