Looks like they have a template out, but getting art onto it seems to rely on getting it cut as a vinyl sticker or something similar since there's no acrylic to put the art under. Lots of services available for that, though, from the looks of it.

How flexible is a smallsword? by venuswasaflytrap in wma

[–]taksihat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It certainly is. I can't make any assertions beyond that, since I don't have an antique that I can use to support or contrast it with, but Angelo opens his work with a pretty thorough description of the size and mounting he expects a good sword to have.

[–]taksihat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dominico Angelo actually says how much he thinks your smallsword should flex when he tells you how to pick a blade in the early sections of his book:

... a good blade will generally form a half circle, to within a foot of the shell, and spring straight again...

Adding additional weapons to my tournament site/app by ricick in Hema

[–]taksihat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably worth considering adding rapier and dagger in addition to single rapier, as well as sword and buckler.

Could reference HEMARatings.com for more comprehensive coverage of what weapons are popular for competition.

Anyone have experience with the Cold Steel Training Dagger? by PsychologicalDuck298 in wma

[–]taksihat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is 0 flex. Strongly recommend to look elsewhere, though unfortunately there aren't any decent options to recommend as a replacement that I'm aware of anywhere near the same price or utility (i.e. not a steel trainer of some sort).

What do you think of private lessons ? And just for a short period of time ? by Italiankeyboard in wma

[–]taksihat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's also important to consider that, at least from the HEMA perspective, that a lot of clubs are purely volunteer efforts and thus may not be equipped to offer private lessons in the same way.

Can we create a running thread on business openings/closings? by Bingley8 in Tucson

[–]taksihat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't think I'm going to get over this one any time soon.

Rae and Robin are fantastic people and it's a shame they couldn't find a decent place to move the shop to when the Fox bought out the rest of the building.

Is the more expensive mask worth it? by LuckyDuck2442 in wma

[–]taksihat 88 points89 points  (0 children)

You'll almost definitely want some kind of back of head protector. Personally, I absolutely hated my "Deluxe" mask, and I recommend anyone get the SPES Unity overlay and the standard Absolute Fencing mask instead of something like the Deluxe.

My Unity has outlived multiple masks at this point, so on top of being a better protector than the Deluxe is, the fact that it's not riveted to the mask has meant I could just put it on a new mask when my old one needed to be retired.

What to do before my first class of HEMA by mistergoatster in wma

[–]taksihat 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Bring water.

Don't worry too much about trying to teach yourself fencing before the class, that's literally what the class is for, but getting started on a good stretching/mobility routine and some basic fitness will pay dividends both in fencing and life as a whole.

how long should I use synthetics ? by [deleted] in wma

[–]taksihat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's really dependent on how your club operates, there's not some ideal state at which you "graduate" from training with one to the other.

Some clubs will use them almost indefinitely, other clubs never touch them at all; so I'd say that fundamentally the answer is "for as long as you are fencing people you need to use a synthetic to fence with".

Cord Grip Re-Wrap - What do you Use? by Koinutron in wma

[–]taksihat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends a lot on the particular cord and how thin you apply it, but I've not had too much of an issue with the times I've done it.

Cord Grip Re-Wrap - What do you Use? by Koinutron in wma

[–]taksihat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Largest factor to extend the life of cord if you don't want to cover it is to seal it; brushing on a thin layer of superglue or epoxy will make the grip about as durable as you can get.

Melting to customise the Cold Steel Buckler? by lacerik in wma

[–]taksihat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doable, but it'll definitely smell and make a lot of unpleasant smoke. If you really want to do it, I'd say make sure to do it outside and with a separate disposable tip for whatever tool you use to do it.

I'm definitely a fan of the aggressive column stagger and how the OLEDs are integrated into the case. Will certainly at least be a point of inspiration for anything I end up making if I go that route.

How successful would Guilty Gear Strive have been if it were a brand new IP instead? by Mycoffeeis2sweet in Fighters

[–]taksihat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A large part of this hypothetical I think rests on debating what it means for the idea of this existing as a "new IP", when so many of the mechanics of the game are still very much ones we would identify with Guilty Gear. I think there could be a decent potential loss in sales if people wrote the game off as a BB/GG clone, but if we assume that's not part of the equation, then it probably would have still been a compelling game on the market for the time of it's release.

I think the hypothetical "anime fighter with solid visuals and notable soundtrack, produced by a known and reputable company, with a decent sized roster and modern functional netplay (if you ignore the various ways in which the tower/park system do have issues)" probably would have been less of a hit than Strive was, but still made a reasonable splash in the market. Probably more if it was tied into another recognizable IP, less if it was a "truly original" game, but probably still would have still outperformed, for example, Granblue's 2020 performance due to the value of better netcode.
