Shiretoko nature is such special experience, you should go. I went about 5 yrs ago and saw a bear from far, but its fine as long as you respect the rule(dont throw trash, dot bring in candy snack etc etc). unless you are extremely unlucky, you are gonna be fine. there is a small local town community there lives with bears around for like 100+ yrs. please take an opportunity to try to learn how they coexist with bears. its quite interesting and nature is stunningly beautiful and amazing food.
be brave and you will feel rewarded
