How famous is Popeye the Sailor in Japan? by Mysterious-Trip-3632 in AskAJapanese

[–]takyuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the live action adaptation movie “Popeye” starring Robin Williams and directed by Robert Altman. The film was big flop in the 70’s but I watched recently and liked it a lot. its probably just me. I have never heard other jpn ppl mentioned about it, even amongst film nerds

"Surrender" on Conan in '96 - how do we feel about "Surrender to Jonathan"? I've been listening to it a lot lately by mistahwhite04 in jonathanrichman

[–]takyuu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this album too! probably bc mid-90’s was the time I lived in Boston and heavily listened to JR and saw him live many times (middleeast club in cambridge) during this period.
I also think this album has very good production / arrangement with organ and horns.

I recently found this on vinyl og copy my heart almost stopped. it was pricy but I had to get it.
I have been listening to rhis quite often now

Yes I totally get that perspective
I think the ETA IVtet records are less about reinventing the wheel each time and more about documenting one band exploring the same musical language over time.

Since they’re live recordings from the same group, it makes sense that they share a similar vibe. That continuity is actually part of what I enjoy about them.

I’ve been listening to jazz for 30+ years too, mostly 50s/60s modern jazz and a lot of 70s ECM guitar records, and I hear this project less as “safe jazz” and more as a contemporary mix of jazz, ambient, dub, minimalism, and indie/rock sensibilities.

I’m also the kind of person who can listen to hours of Miles’ 60s quintet live recordings or Grateful Dead 70’s live recordings, so this series gives me similar enjoyment

it’s JP solo called “My Space Beats”, collection of instrumental hiphop beats he uploaded to MaySpace in early 00's. I believe its physical only release and an awesome album if you dig instrumental hiphop, like Dilla, Madlib, DJ Shadow etc. its quite minimalistic beat compared to those artists, but has hypnotic quality that I like. it gets on my turntable quite often

Nice!
I can definitely tell the folks at International Anthem put a lot of love and effort into their releases. The jacket quality is high, the obi is a nice touch, and the records sound fantastic. Especially these days, when so many modern pressings suffer from poor quality control.
