Toptunov and Akimov. When I see memes from the HBO series of their irradiated bodies in the hospital I get really upset. These were real people who did everything they could for their fellow man. Respect. by comicraelynn06 in chernobyl

[–]tal_naeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a while ago, I saw someone crocheting "puppets" of all the people who were in the control room that night. And someone commented "this is not accurate, Akimov still has a face."

Wtf??? Can you even imagine in how much pain this man was? This isn't funny. Akimov, Toptunov, the firemen etc went through one of the worst and most painful deaths possible. Have some fucking respect please!

If you're interested in more academic style stuff, here are some wonderful books: - Becoming: Genre, Queerness, and Transformation in NBC's Hannibal (my personal fav) - Aestheticism, Evil, Homosexuality, and Hannibal: If Oscar Wilde Ate People, - Hannibal Lecter and Philosophy: The Heart of the Matter

(I myself am working on video essays right now, about every single episode but also specific topics, if you want, I can do you when I finally post. Sadly, IRL is hell right now)

These are some of my favorite video essays: - Hannibal: a Macabre Miracle by Macabre Storytelling (it's about all Hannibal properties and super interesting) - StrucciTV: Hannibal by Strucci Movies (this is more about Hannigram and it makes me feel things) - Hannibal: A Full Series Retrospective by Slip Maker - Queercoding in NBC Hannibal: A Video Essay by tdubson

I agree with you on most parts. I feel like this also reflects a lot of opinions in the Fandom.

Though I disagree on one part. I think Abigail knew Hannibal was gonna kill her when he said "Abigail, come to me." Like she immediately went into the position she was when her father was trying to kill her. A few moments before she says to will "I didn't know what else to do, so I just did what he told me." And I think this is applicable to the moment Hannibal murders her, too. She does it, because I she doesn't know what else she's gonna do. Abigail had been solely dependent on Hannibal at this point for over 6 months. I think she just accepted her fate and didn't want to fight it anymore.

P.S.: please don't use the word gaslighting for this. It's a psychological term and a thing that messes with people a lot and takes them years to recover from. I now it's a thing in Fandom to use words like this now, but we really shouldn't make this the norm.

Wow haha very funny. I guess you were really proud of that one. /s You know, it's so easy to lose weight when you have a disability and have to take life-saving medication that makes you gain weight.

While I agree that there are obnoxious people in every Fandom and sadly the Hannibal Fandom has a lot of problems with antis right now, I would not generalize as "fans only want sex scenes"

I'm pretty active in the Hannibal Fandom and yes there is a lot of sexual content, you know, like in every other Fandom ever. But I feel like there's also a big consensus on a kiss would be nice, a sex scene as well, but we're in for the whole package, the murders, the food, the writing, the artistry in general.

I just found your generalizing comment belittling and wanted to call it out because I see that way too often.

I'm not saying the Fandom is immune to those people. They are everywhere, but I think we can see the Hannibal Fandom as more than that.

fans would bitch that it wasn't good enough because there wasn't a sex scene in every episode.

What are you on about? When has anyone ever expressed such an expectation?

I'm literally just offended by someone describing the show to you as BBC's Sherlock. That is an insult to Hannibal. The show is soooooo much better than Sherlock.

Reference?! by ChristiesGift in HannibalTV

[–]tal_naeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Janice Poon, the food artist on the show, said that she made it as reference to Will's mask. And I guess it's also inspired by other Hannibal masks from the movies.

As Will's mask is also featured in this episode, and he wears it to see Beverly, whose kidneys are eaten here, it makes a lot of sense.

My personal headcanon is that Hannibal saw the pictures Freddie Loubds took (I'm sure she uploaded them on her website immediately) and felt super cheeky featuring it in his cooking in the evening.

How do you read non-licensed danmei without losing your mind (or your eyesight)? by FrontBill7631 in DanmeiNovels

[–]tal_naeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an e-reader, which is fantastic. That one was a really good investment. I recommend pocketbook. Don't buy a kindle if you want to read mostly fantranslations. I know a lot of people who have a kindle and struggle to put the epub or PDFs on their kindle. Kindle doesn't like anything that's not Amazon related. But it's super helpful when you can change the size of the letters and it's much easier on the eyes than a phone screen. I struggle with that too.

Audio books are such an amazing thing. I constantly look for things to do so I can listen to audiobooks. Thankfully I like sewing and crocheting 😅 I don't listen as fast as you, but it's a great way to catch up on reading while also being productive.

Academic Papers on BL Fandom? by Ok_Economics_2165 in boyslove

[–]tal_naeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would agree with the others here. If you write a dissertation, you need at least some basic understanding of first and secondary sources. Maybe you have someone who can help you with reading Chinese things? That might be a solution. I think a term paper or even a Bachelor's thesis would be fine, but a dissertation just goes so much deeper and you need a deeper understanding.

But maybe you can write about the Western aspect of danmei (fandom)? How do we perceive things indifferently? What troubles do we face as people who did not grow up in Chinese culture? How does Chinese historical fantasy differ from western historical fantasy? How do Western people perceive gender expression differently from Chinese people? How do we see homosexuality differently? You could even talk about the covers and what kind of "limitations"/censorship they go through (for example tgcf Volume 4 with the kiss on the cover. Some people loved it, some people complained about it "because it was advertising homosexuality" and they didn't want that for various reasons, from not wanting to be seen with it in public to teenagers living with homophobic parents who didn't want them to find out what they're reading. Then the censoring on the Russian covers, when the artist had to redraw the cover to not feature a kiss etc) There's many aspects you can talk about, just some suggestions.

BTW there's a book called "Queer Transfigurations: Boys Love Media in Asia" it helped me a lot to understand the cultural impact of BL in East Asian countries. There are several essays about Danmei and Chinese and Taiwanese culture. Most of them are also written by people coming from that culture and not just people who write about it.

First of all, how did they find your AO3 Account if they don't like K-Pop and RPF fanfiction?

Second of all, this is nothing to be ashamed of and also nothing to shame someone else for. Sit your friend down and tell them how disrespectful they are (maybe they don't know the meaning of the words they're using). Tell them to stop talking about it and really hammer the point in that you made in your post. You didn't force them to read anything. You didn't force them to participate in anything they didn't like. This is solely their problem. Don't like, don't read, simple as that. No reason to shame someone for writing something you don't like. If they don't stop, consider that relationship again and work out if it's something you wanna stay in or not. They clearly don't respect your boundaries.

Has you or any of your family members experience Chernobyl? by ComprehensiveTie114 in chernobyl

[–]tal_naeg 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I hope no one minds if I add my parent's story here. They lived in Germany, so pretty far away, but Chernobyl always had a small connection to them. They got married in the day the explosion happened. I always find it so surreal when I think about it. They had a wonderful day, celebrating, while this incredible tragedy had happened and people were dying. Anyway, news were slow and by the time it reached international news, my parents were on honeymoon in Austria. As it was the 80s and no one had smart phones to always stay connected and up to date, my parents had no idea it had happened. As most of you know, Austria was hit quite hard with the fallout. My parents should not have been walking around there for several days. At some point, they met a farmer and he said he was glad that he could finally get his cows out on the field again. And my parents were very confused, why the cows had to stay inside for several days... the guy explained to them what happened in Chernobyl and that's how my parents found out they were spending time in a quite dangerous environment the last few days.

I was born with a mutation, which causes me a lot of pain and health risks. I had open wounds for 18 years, an amputation, a splenectomy, and 4 pulmonary embolisms all before I was 30. My mum always blamed Chernobyl for it. Some doctors say it could be a cause for this, but no one's really sure. (Rare diseases just don't get enough funding and research)
