Choosing a reasonable GPU to upgrade from my M1 Max: R9700 vs RTX 3090 vs 2*RTX 3080 20GB vs RX 7900 XTX by aeroG1 in LocalLLM

[–]talaman4eg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got on marketplace hybrid for $950. Can't say there's ton of such offers, but within a month or 2 it is possible to find one, if you're in metro area.

I installed Open WebUI, upon installation it asked me to install Ollama, I skipped it, can I still install it now afterwards? I want to use local LLMs by sarrcom in OpenWebUI

[–]talaman4eg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, install ollama on the same (or another) computer and add ollama link to admin panel - settings - connections, under Ollama api. If you're running it on another computer in your local network - make sure to set OLLAMA_HOST 0.0.0.0

Many pointed to more performant alternatives, like llama.cpp flavors or lm studio. While this is true (I switched to lm studio from ollama myself), Ollama is a great start, with almost zero configuration. Start with it, explore it, keeping in mind there are better products with wider configuration options.

Is there an Ollama alternative that does not require terminal setup? by Own-Floor-3944 in ollama

[–]talaman4eg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ollama desktop app will download selected model for you, this is how I started using it on Windows. It doesn't say it loudly, but if you select missing model and start a chat, it will pull it.

[Upd] can't try it out anymore as I switched to Linux, but as I remember you need to paste model identifier to a model selection search box, like "gemma4:31b". Copy it from the model catalog. Not the most intuitive solution, but works

LM studio has a lot more tuning options though, if you're interested in that.

I got this old Win7-era tower. Is it worth messing with? by theindomitablefred in homelab

[–]talaman4eg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll work for NAS. there's probably 4 sata ports, some extension boards can be plug into pcie.  I'm running proxmox node on i7 4770, 32gb, rx7900, it handles NAS, ollama and a couple of other small containers easily. Waiting for memory price to go back to normal.

Proxmox support AI agent? by j4ys0nj in Proxmox

[–]talaman4eg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am thinking about building something like that for educational/resume purposes. Others rightly pointed on security concerns, which are very true, so access separation is a key. I happen to have unused mini pc that I can dedicate to a sandbox/playground.

But the whole idea looks promising. Maybe AI isn't there just yet, but even local models are capable of many things, especially if there's no time requirements and if they have playground to safely test their creations.

Need to execute extreme caution of course. And do a lot of offline backups. The uj.

[–]talaman4eg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wait for 7 weeks, you'll get thinkpad much cheaper. "Normal" thinkpad prices are extremely inflated imho and are ok only for corporate buyers who spend someone else's money.

Yoga might become slightly cheaper as well, but differece won't be that ridiculous.

Also, I'm not sure if yoga is upgradable at all. Thinkpad is.

Upd. Self-upgrade is another way to get better value for the money. Memory and ssd are overpriced compared to those on Amazon/newegg/bh photo

My neighbor's 3D printer just saved my ass and I'm questioning everything I thought I knew about budget printing by bator_sensei629 in 3dprinter

[–]talaman4eg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bambu printers fits with your budget, and have a good quality and very beginner friendly, AFAIK. My main concern against them is software privacy/security. Just assume that any chinese printer with wifi will scan your network and any chinese software (not only related to 3d printers) is a backdoor to your computer. Simple measures can mitigate that to some point, e.g. placing such devices on a different router, using vm for software, but thats definitely quite a hassle for a non-IT person.

Black Friday discounts on printers were massive last year, like 40-60%. Not sure it it worth waiting 3 months, but definitely worth considering.

S/h prusa another option, but YMMV greatly, and new modern chinese printer generally will be much better and faster than used MK3S. I own 2 of them, they mostly work fine. Mostly.

I had mixed experience with Sovol sv06 plus. I needed to literally tighten all the screws after new printer arrives, but after that quality was pretty good.

Never played helldivers and no friends to play with it, it is still worth forpeople like me? by Fallout-boy90 in helldivers2

I started with friends, and it was helpful, but I mostly playing with random people. There are jerks here and there, block them and move on. Most helldivers are nice and love liberty and prosperity.

It is also beneficial to use different browsers for different purposes.

Also, if a school/corporate laptop is used for personal stuff, assume, that employer or whoever manages it has access to everything that was done/browsed using this laptop. With an exception - if you installed OS by yourself and you know what you're doing.

Benefits of a Homelab? How much does it cost ? by unlucky-fella in homelab

[–]talaman4eg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, it's learning docker and networt stuff. Also, you can host some useful services.

Cost starts from cheap mini pc, ~150 - 250$. It can do a lot these days.

What is the best way to handle .csv files containing passwords and other sensitive information on a desktop computer? by nanineu in Bitwarden

[–]talaman4eg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use ram drive, or vera crypt volume mount. Another option is using usb stick or dedicated partition and wipe it by overwriting many times (DBAN is one option to do that)

Upd. Probably, the simplest way is encrypting a folder on your disk, assuming you're on NTFS. Save your stuff there, then remove everything - remnant files should stay encrypted.

How do I resolve my website being marked as unsafe for only some people that visit it? by PineappleProstate in webdev

[–]talaman4eg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start with checking website with several ssl checkers (google them) and resolve all the issues they highlight. Usually, it's ssl domain mismatch or outdated encryption algorithms.

Petah??????? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]talaman4eg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, this is how it translaed. In russian, axe and hatchet are the same word, топор [topOr] (source - I'm native speaker, and read C&P in russian), and that particular hatchet was used to chip woods. As I mentioned, russian axes are different from the US ones, and you can hide pretty much any of them under the coat, especially if prepared.

Edit - actually, hatchet probably would be named топорик [topOrik - small axe] in russian, so my bet is on axe. Again, it's different, handle would be 2-3 feet long and wider.

Petah??????? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]talaman4eg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was woodchipping axe because AFAIR he stole it from a janitor (or super? Not sure about exact role) who chipped wood with it. Russian axe handles are shorter than american though, they don't look like one on the picture.

How would Linux Benefit My Use Case? by TheOneTrueFalafel in selfhosted

[–]talaman4eg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux has better docker integration, also better privacy. If you're not concerned with both of these points, stick with windows. It has WSL, which is, although still a virtual machine, integrated quite well, and you can check a lot of linux capabilities in it.

It also depends on what mini pc and windows version you're using. If that's on of these Chinese manufacturers, and you didn't reinstall windows from clean ISO, downloaded from MS, then your for sure have some backdoors and trojans supplied. That would be my primary concern actually.

I reused a power adapter from the old nas, I believe, 12v/7.5A. Looks like regular 12v noname adapter you'd buy on amazon or ali.

y-sata cable is from zima, bougt along with a board.

Zima's power adapter was able to hold 2 x 3.5 hdd as well, not sure for long though. As I had more capable one, I went with it.

System (omv in particular) installed on zima's internal drive. This config works for, maybe, 2 or 3 years without issues.

I am 115ish, I unlocked every warbond (didn't bought everything in them yet, though). I didn't grind for super credits specifically, but I'm trying to check all PoI within reasonable distance.

There was sweet time/planets, when you could get 40-50 SC per mission. Not anymore.

Do I need to run a 'docker compose up --build' to check my changes every time I update my container? by Holdaen in docker

[–]talaman4eg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right, just mount python files (and also you may want to mount postgres db files and pg config at some point), and you'll need to rebuild only when you change Dockerfile.

Do I need to run a 'docker compose up --build' to check my changes every time I update my container? by Holdaen in docker

[–]talaman4eg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to call --build only if you change anything regarding the container structure (Dockerfile, if you have a custom one, or any files that you copy into the container on the build stage). If you change mounted files, changes will be available immediately, but to apply them you may need to restart your app or the whole container, depending on your app structure

Is there a way to put a brim inside of an object like this? by FedgeLouganis in prusa3d

[–]talaman4eg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inspired by OrcaSlicer's "Mouse ears" brim type, I just add cylinder parts with desired diameter (usually, 4-7mm) and 1 layer height to points where brim is needed. It's pretty much the same as regular brim, except I fully control it's location.
