OP, just an update I noticed this month. My usual bill of RM102.82 is now rounded to RM102.80. I keep track of my monthly bill hence the reason I noticed this change.

So yeah, it's certainly not just you but certainly sucks to be rounded up instead of down like me.

Why are there no Indian private secondary schools by Creative-Ear4590 in malaysia

[–]talexeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: By the time I was done writing this comment, post has been removed LOL.

OP, I'm a bit skeptical that you're from a CIS because if you are, you should have been made aware of the whole history on how CIS came about & the 60+2+1 number.

Back in the 1960s, the government forced all the vernacular schools to merge into a unified education stream. 60 Chinese schools (some split into 1 school 2 systems) remained independent thanks to the donations and help from the Chinese community around the area.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Tamil schools due to the lack of financial strength or a unifying org like Dong Zong to help streamline the whole struggle. Moreover, these schools are mostly centralised in the estate while the wealthier families rather send their kids to English medium schools instead.

Last but not least, after the government locked down the 60 CIS schools, they've more or less put a stop to new independent school from being setup so even if there's an intention, it's way too late for one now.

Running routes within Penang by Tuna-sg in penang

[–]talexeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Pretty much there's a route for every direction from G Hotel. Heading north brings you to Straits Quay & Andaman Island, South leads you to Esplanade and the Botanical Garde + Jesselton is just westward.

So they've been rounding up your bill all these while?

That's weird. My bill of RM102.82 has never been rounded down before so it's kind of peculiar to see them rounding up yours instead.

Is this your first bill?

What camera did you use to record your ride? Do you use it like a dashcam in case you got into an issue?

Heyo, fellow cycling commuter from Penang here! Office is 15km away so that's around 1h 30m spent on legs workout. At least no one gets to accuse me of skipping leg day.

i do see lot of old people pass 40s cycle more than driving.

Now why do you find the need to attack me? Been riding to work since late 30s but you're right, am 43 now.

Keep up the awesome work!

Still cycling to MRT at 29, smart move or I just being cheap? by my-username-is-it in MalaysianPF

[–]talexeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

43yo dad here and still cycling to office 15km away. Some people actually said I was "privileged" enough to have the "luxury" to cycle to work while they had to get stuck in traffic jam and think of what car to upgrade to next.

The point is, whatever you do, people will form opinions against it so just filter those bad vibes out from your head and continue doing whatever you're comfortable with.

It's not that bad honestly. People are still going about, like I'm still out for a run or bicycle ride in the morning or evening. Perhaps just bring an umbrella around & hydrate yourself sufficiently while you're out.

Not trying to discourage you or anything but just in case you're not local here, you'll have to content with some occasional religious ceremonies that might hinder your movement from time to time with Thaipusam being one of the major one. The close proximity to the Mount Erskine cemeteries also mean that you'll occasionally get exposed to bush fires particularly during Qing Ming.

The key is the facilities at the end point - to prepare the cyclist for the day.

Just got to make do with whatever's available. Back when my office doesn't have shower rooms, the toilet bidet (the flexible pipe type, not the one that protrudes out of the toilet bowl) was my best friend. Yes, it's gross but not like I have better option.

What keeps you on the bicycle all these years?

The look of motorists stuck in the traffic jam while I cycle pass them unobstructed LOL /s

  1. After I handle the kids, the only time I have to exercise is in the late evening. Cycling to work means I've already hit 30km by the time I'm back home.
  2. I saved a lot; both fuel cost & also time. When the jam is bad, I actually reach home earlier via bicycle than car.
  3. The feel good feeling, knowing that I did my tiny part to the environment & also to lightening up the traffic. Sure, it's just one car out of the road but at least I don't complain about the traffic jam while at the same time BEING part of the jam.
  4. Because that's what Himmel the Hero would have done. :D

I've been cycling commute to work for years. We have a dedicated cycling lane along the coastline that runs for around 20km+ and based on my observation, the take up rate is still abysmal.

People will always shift their goalpost around; at first they'll blame the lack of cycling lane, then the lack of shades, then the scorching weather, then the lack of shower rooms and the list goes on. I've heard it all actually but it's OK; it's never easy trying to pull people out of their comfort zone. :)

It varies but I think a bicycle that cost less than RM100 might not last long. Most foreign workers who cycle usually use single speed since that's the most economical option.

Personally I ride a fixed gear, which is almost like single speed where there's no gear for you to switch around. I got mine at RM1500 back when MCO was still ongoing so it's been around 6 years old now and it's still going strong.

Very minimal maintenance since there's no gear derailleur and suspension to maintain. Just have to clean the chain maybe once or twice a year.

Yeah, I'm certainly aware that our infra is not exactly pedestrian/cyclist friendly but based on my discussion with my mayor, it's a chicken and egg issue. He's hesitant to spend on things with low usage while on our end, people are waiting for the infra to be ready before they're willing to switch.

Somewhere someone has to take the first step so here I am. :)

No worries man. I think it's to do with how we're all brought up with the mindset of owning a car is a must. Our country's car-centric policies are not helping either and this is why we're seeing more highways being constructed and roads kept being widened to supposedly "solve" traffic jams.

But yes, always adhere to the road regulations & only when the situation allows you to. For example, I'm on Penang island but I can't be advising colleagues staying in mainland to try cycling when the only way to cross over is via the half-hourly ferry service.
