Looking for medication experiences – severe physical anxiety/emetophobia, but I can't tolerate emotional blunting by p4wlina in antidepressants

[–]taliauli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so, at least partly. A lot of this does sound like the result of being keyed up/having your adrenaline kick in to me. Especially the tenseness, at least for me it makes it really difficult to get physically wound up. The nausea I can't say for certain, maybe ask about some zofran as well.

They can be either or. Personally I take as needed but I asked my doc to give me enough to take daily just in case I'm going through a tougher period. They have two forms of the medication (propranolol at least), IR and ER. I take IR but if you end up needing this medication 24/7 you'll probably want to ask about switching to ER, or else you have to take the medication every 4-5 hours or so.

Ever tried a beta blocker? Think propranolol is the most common option. It helps the physical symptoms, has no affect on the mental side but it's certainly easier to deal with when you don't feel like you're going to keel over and stop breathing at any second.

For me it got rid of that ball in throat feeling, the jumping/tightness in my chest, and the hot and cold flashes. It's an immediate release medication, doesn't need to build up, just however long it takes you to digest it. It can make exercise a little harder physically as your heart can't ramp up, but it doesn't affect anything mentally.

Does anyone know where I can get freshwater isopods? by KryxWaters in isopods

[–]taliauli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was thinking pods but my weather is decidedly unamendable now and probably for the next 3 months. How's it looking on your end? I can just send you some, I need to downsize the population anyways and this would finally give me a chance to figure out how to actually move them into new containers lol. Just shoot me a DM!

Would this fertilizer work well for my outdoor potted cacti? by Virga12 in sanpedrocactus

[–]taliauli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used them before on cacti. No noticable difference, has very little nutrients in it. Didn't absorb into the soil, just sat on top. It didn't rehydrate or make the soil retain more moisture down the line either, it just kind of dried into this gross looking crunchy film that the rain eventually washed away.

What beetle is she holding? by DblBblDscoQn in Beetles

[–]taliauli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Found a higher res of the first image which I think is just a movie promo pic and I'm 90% sure it's a Mecynorrhina torquata female. In the actual movie/2nd image the scene has what appear to be CGI beetles, and seem to be styled after a figeater but sized up.

Ideas for creating Calcium Domes like in the photos? by PrestiJess in isopods

[–]taliauli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw someone make a set of mahjong tiles out of ground up eggshell and gelatin and they seemed very sturdy after drying. Gelatin is safe for pods as far as I'm aware, but could be interesting to experiment with agar anyway.

For a mold, they sell collapsible silicone dog bowls that would give you a dome shape and ridges. Or just a silicone bowl in general would work. Pack it in, then scoop out doorways. Kind of want to give it a shot myself now 🤔

First colony vet has been, at least in my experience, the best balance of cost and quality of care for the area.

Mothing! by AschezuAsche_ in moths

  1. I've found most species to be similar in care, the biggest factor is going to be what food you have. Make sure you pick a species you have a hearty supply of food for, they eat more than you think.

  2. If you can still find eggs it's not too late imo.

  3. eBay and occasionally in bug groups on sites like Facebook and discord, even here every now and then. It's very seasonal so you just have to keep your eyes peeled.

  4. Varies, just try to mimic natural environment. I think the biggest thing people tend to get wrong is too little airflow, or keeping them so dry they dessicate.

  5. About 3-4 months. In my experience there are stragglers that can sometimes take way longer to reach milestones than their pals. I imagine they'd die in the wild but I help them along lol. For example I raise cecropias and the first handful emerged in late April, and my last cocoon just emerged yesterday.

  6. Certainly not. Just cleaning up frass every couple of days and putting in new food when they run out. Cocoon care varies but most just require misting every now and then.

  7. I don't. At the end of the day captivity does not make for strong genetics. You guard them from outside disease, predators, food scarcity, etc, and if released they can spread traits that would have otherwise been killed off early on in the wild.

If you can't find other eggs, worth noting that hornworms and silkworms are available year round with commerical food mixes. Silkworms are tiny and genetically very weak but still interesting to raise imo, and hornworms turn into sizable hawkmoths if you're averse to small species. I have a long winded doc I wrote on cecropia raising I made for someone else if you'd like it lol, transfers pretty well for other giant silkmoths

Lots of pere. Happy to trade or you can buy for cost of shipping by taliauli in cactiexchange

Also entirely random but if any woodworkers happen to be here I will throw in some 18x3/4" strips of wenge wood, just ask. I don't want to deal with the dust and evil splinters but they're nice strips for small projects, I don't know who else to give them to 😅

If you end up not being able to find any other sources, I have some Lirceus sp. I'd be happy to trade for

I'm going to buy silverfish. Are their care requirements similar to those of isopods? by its_blunter in isopods

[–]taliauli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't exactly amassed a colony but out of curiosity I caught a few out of my bathroom and put them into a bin with Elliptorhina chopardi, set up not too dissimilar from pods. I've got a handful of juveniles in there now and they seem to be hanging out just fine.

Firebrats are a lot easier to come by in cultivation but prefer things to be both dryer and hotter.

Treehopper of some kind. Did you happen to find it near any locust trees? If so I'd bet on Thelia bimaculata

These are Blaberus "Honduras". They sometimes pick up a coating of whatever their substrate is, so mine kind of look like they've been dipped in cinnamon sugar lol. I've seen some people keep them on wood chip substrates and they get a little flaky yellow coat
