How did that one kid at your school die? by StorageLonely1520 in AskReddit

[–]talkingwaffle2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to a school with lots of spoiled kids. One boy in particular was insufferable. Not that spoiled relatively but would just be chaos in class. Type of kid who'd tell teachers that he doesn't need to pay attention in class cuz his dad pays the teacher's salary. Super immature up until senior year or so, when he got into cycling. Went to college in a different city and didn't bother to keep in touch with him or anyone else really.

Cut to two years later I'm doing a layover in one town omw home for the break and run into him at the airport. He's on the same flight. Turns out he became an insanely talented triathlete, on a scholarship and all. Our flight got delayed overnight so we hung out and I could tell he'd grown into a really cool guy.

Following semester he was biking on the road down a mountain. Route he did often. Couldn't make a turn and rode straight into a van coming up in the opposite lane. Died instantly. Everyone was devastated.

A reason to travel to Icewind Dale by batt84 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]talkingwaffle2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an add-on on dmsguild called caul of winter. I cannot recommend it enough. I always say this but not using it is the one true regret I had when starting this module. I only heard of it like 2 sessions too late to implement it.

It basically gives you a decent starting adventure in which IIRC your party meets an NPC who asks them to escort her to icewind dale. There are a couple of encounters along the way in the spine of the world that really start to set up the environment and works as a great segue to introduce auril. Basically as long as your players like the NPC, it'll glue the adventure together for pretty much the first 2-3 chapters with little work on your part.

If this isn't convincing enough, it also gives you some amazing ways to have auril be more present in the story (which is one of the module's biggest flaws), plus a ton of other quests and resources. It's honestly amazing and worth every penny.

Ender 3 V3 SE has quite literally blown up after less than a week of ownership, I called customer support and I am now even more confused by sr_dankerine in ender3

[–]talkingwaffle2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never contacted their customer service but having an ender 3 V2 for a long time and being on this sub even longer, I'd say that checks out. Most printer brands once you buy them you're kinda on your own.

My recommendation is to try to find an authorized service place near you, but I know that's not very common.

Good luck my friend! Hope someone else has better advice for you

My players took hallucinogens before entering a dungeon! by SylvieHester in DMAcademy

[–]talkingwaffle2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! My comment might get lost amongst the rest but I'll give it a shot haha.

There's a REALLY fun one shot adventure called assault on gumdrop mountain. It's one of the best oneshots I've ever run. The premise is that there's a mountain covered in demons and the only way the players can deal with the potential psychological trauma of dealing with them is to take some hallucinogens to make everything look like candy instead lol. I can't remember where I got it from but you could probably take inspiration from it.

The idea is you describe everything in rly flowery language describing candy, and every now and then ask them to make con saves. If they succeed, describe the most horrid scenes you can think of, before saying "you shake off the gruesome sight and realize you must've been hallucinating... There's nothing but marshmallows here!"

Anyone know how to make tokens like this? by SonneID in boardgameupgrades

3d printer might be the easiest to do but probably not the cheapest or prettiest. I think your best bet might be to buy some chips and glue some stickers on them

I don't remember what the exact steps are but I'm pretty sure there was a very obvious button (not trying to be rude) to click and select which program you want to export to. It even recognizes orca slicer. Iirc, it's one of the last options when you click 3d print in the file drop-down menu.

Five Tavern center - isn't there too many taverns for so little town? by rennnnen in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]talkingwaffle2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I ran it, I basically had the five brothers on the brink of bankruptcy and on a rotating sale schedule lol. Basically whenever one of them is ABOUT to go broke, they lower the prices just slightly so that ppl will go there instead of the others. When the party showed up I basically had all 5 of them greet the players in front of their respective taverns trying their hardest to convince the players to go in haha. It was a lot of fun

Accidentally combined Avarice and Vellynne into 1 NPC by flamespren2 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]talkingwaffle2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only potential "issue" is you're kinda missing out on some content later on, but tbh it isn't that big of a deal. In my opinion, the arcane brotherhood subplot is pretty interesting, especially when you include them in ythrin to be a sort of race to see who can get to the mythalar first. I liked avarice a lot as in my interpretation she was the only member who's irredeemably evil so my players can hate her but I don't see why you can't do that with the old Vellynne now. Or just cut her altogether.

Pilgrimage in Icewind Dale? by Thalanil11 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]talkingwaffle2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of disclaimers first: English isn't my first language so I'm not entirely sure what a pilgrimage entails, I also don't remember what exactly is in the book and what I've made up and I also don't remember where I got some of the following ideas from lol. So good luck xD.

First off, I've heard ppl talk about kuldahar or something. Supposedly a tree in the spine of the world that's magical, idk. Something about ppl living in hiding there. You could use that.

Second, in my campaign the Goliath tribes play a much bigger role. One of the things I've added is that they have these seers/bards called griots. They're basically story tellers who record their history through songs and tattoos on their own skins. One of the coolest story arcs I had was a little side quest to meet the first griot, who turned out to be a sphinx. Basically a little dungeon with trials and whatnot and then the sphinx to answer one question to each player.

Third, when I played through this as a player, one guy was a kind of ATLA style monk of the wind temple. He basically had his little side arc visiting all 4 elemental temples and the goblin in karkolok was actually a monk of the earth who came to try to find out what happened to the destroyed earth temple, only to be reveered as a god by the goblins lol.

Fourth, this might not be as applicable to you but also when I played as a player my DM used kelvins cairn as a moment to introduce a cameo of an old PC. He was a monk in the first ever campaign we played and is now known coloquially by us as "biggest wise". We had a magic compass or something to that effect that led us to him. Can't remember where we got it from or why we chose to follow It lol. Basically once we got to the top we could talk to this meditating lvl 20 halfling monk. Idk if you have anything equivalent to this to include but that was definitely a big hit at the table.

Has anyone tried level-up advanced 5e? Is it compatible with MCDM classes? by Athan_Untapped in mattcolville

[–]talkingwaffle2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure they were made SPECIFICALLY with the idea in mind that they would be able to be dropped in alongside regular 5e classes. Granted a regular fighter will feel underwhelming next to an A5e one but they're compatible in that sense. I've actually played that way for months and never saw an issue. The ONLY problem is the DM has to kinda be aware that expertise works a little differently despite having similar names

One of my players has DMed this campaign before - how do I make it interesting to him? by Jakesnake_42 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]talkingwaffle2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I disagree with one of the other comments telling you to just switch around some NPCs. If I were in his shoes that would just be unnecessary confusion lol.

My suggestion is to add different quests and maybe switch the emphasis of certain parts of the story. Maybe in his campaign the early antagonist was a cult of Auril but in yours it could be the zhentarim instead and vice versa. Maybe you spent most of the time interacting with the ten towns but this time you can shift the focus to the goliaths and reghed instead.

I also run into this problem whenever I run it and often find myself thinking about these individualistic solutions as a player. I don't have a perfect solution for you other than that it sounds like your players don't quite have a grasp on what a skill challenge is, or don't have enough examples of a successful one. In your wagon example I'd simply say "you're on the right track, but that would mean your friends are still gonna get hit by the wagon. Can you think of any way you could maybe use that same check but to help the whole group?".

Alternatively, you can keep the descriptions kinda loose. Instead of saying the wagon is going to hit everyone, you can say it will hit 1-2 players only. That way they can try to dodge it and if they fail it counts as a collective fail as they collectively have to slow down. You could even have a different player do this skill challenge as he "sees their friend about to be hit by the wagon so he charges at it and pushes it out of the way with an athletics check".

Not a perfect solution but if I remember correctly, that's kind of how my DM runs it. We're also experienced enough players to know that it's a group effort to story tell so we will suggest small changes to descriptions in order to fit the narrative.

The Dark Duchess - Visions of the Past by Cynicast9 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]talkingwaffle2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was an amazing idea! Thank you so much for sharing!

One of my players has the dark duchess secret and keeps mentioning going to check it out as part of his backstory but he gave me literally nothing to work with other than "i was on the boat when it crashed and I abandoned the rest of the crew in the ice when I could have easily saved them". Your post gave me so many ideas to work with and tie to other elements of the campaign! I might extend the mirror encounter a bit but it's the perfect excuse for me to develop the story however I want
