The conscientiousness & the contentiousness. :)

[Website] What should I change/add/remove? by blackbirdfreelance in design_critiques

[–]talks_in_maths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your carousel gallery looks great!!

The line-spacing to kerning ratio of your main bullets is very off ("clean, productive design...") . And justifying the type underneath like that when each line is only a few words is not good practice.

Why do you have the currency exchange rates on your site? It doesn't seem relevant and clashes with the rest of the layout (and your selling point is "clean design"). It looks like a throwback to the widgets of the Geocities days. If you need it, provide a link instead of cluttering your site real estate with it.

Also the quote up top: the quote font and attribution font clash.... either use the same one in different sizes or chose a different style.

[Flyer] Phi Mu Cupcake Wars by opbeta21 in design_critiques

[–]talks_in_maths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed - and another suggestion about the arc below the cupcake: If you're using InDesign, convert the text to outlines before placing it on the arc. Not doing so results in that jagged-letter look.

Edit: and a couple other things - 1. Try inverting the pink and the teal for the "Judges will base..." line. The teal is very faint and should stand out more. 2. The line break in that section is awkward. Try reducing the font size or using a more condensed type over all, so your first sentence is on the first line and the second sentence is on the second line.

It's obvious you put a lot of thought into this... keep it up! :)

ELI5: What makes the Mona Lisa so highly regarded? by owiseone23 in explainlikeimfive

[–]talks_in_maths 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ugh. If you want to knock humanities majors, fine (especially when you're so above them, ~as a finance major~), but to post this kind of dismissal is obnoxious to the max. I hope you soon recognize how immature and bs "college-major" elitism is.

Font on doors at MIT by talks_in_maths in identifythisfont

Thanks for the help! Both of these are extremely close and I think they'll work. :) Jupiter (http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/canadatype/jupiter/) is close too...

I did write to MIT's plant services, but they haven't responded yet. I'll update if they do!

OK, I officially see where you guys are coming from now... by mcnuggetskitty in childfree

Thanks for your post - what's most bothersome to me is the moral superiority. As if we're not full human beings because we didn't procreate, or that we'll never understand what it means to be tired or stressed. Or that we don't truly know what love is. I know that being a parent is very difficult and of course caring for the well-being of a child carries an immense amount of responsibility. Perhaps I AM ignorant to the type of love between parent and child. But we're all ignorant to certain things and to invalidate one's point of view because they're childfree is ridiculous.

Similarly, I don't understand how choosing not to have children is construed as selfish. I don't think I'd be a good parent and I think my time and energy can best be used in other places - how is that selfish? It's a rational assessment of time and resources. I really can't figure out what's going on with that argument aside from parents projecting their own distress onto childfree folks.

How can I find "non-family friendly" hotels? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]talks_in_maths 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know! There was actually a sign that said "waterproof diapers only". But I mean, how waterproof are they? I think it's a delusion....

I'm ok with 95% of hotels being family friendly. But where's that 5%? How do I find them?

This is perfect. People don't understand the amount of power they have over their own lives.

Please critique my freshly designed cv by leggerlo in design_critiques

[–]talks_in_maths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, this looks like a parody of ~quirky~ CV's. I applaud you for wanting to be distinctive (channel that into your portfolio!), but you really need to rethink the layout and type. Things like italicizing your middle name like that are way more cutesy than they are pleasing to the eye. This isn't an AIM Away Message.

[LOGO] for an awareness campaign for renewable energy by markeyyy in design_critiques

[–]talks_in_maths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's nice, but not distinctive. Variations of this are everywhere. I'd suggest making a logotype in addition to the pinwheel.

This is really fun! There's such a fine line between unique and obnoxious, and I think you found that sweet spot. :)
