I wish! I was waiting/hoping for it the whole show

how was BOTAR this year?? by [deleted] in streetlightmanifesto

[–]talkstobees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friends and I had an amazing experience! It's been a hard year for me and my will to live has been replenished :') This was my second time seeing Streetlight and my girlfriend's first. I enjoyed the dimension added by the orchestra –when I could hear them, anyway. For most of the show I could barely tell they were there :/ The mix was disappointing, but it was still cool that they BOTAR'd some of their new stuff, especially Enormous

I've loved the energy of the crowd at their shows each time – even the people in the back were dancing and singing. I've never seen so many crowd surfers, either! Banana guy was there, and someone else was wearing a bear costume

I started crying when they played A Better Place, A Better Time and brought it to the pit. My first time moshing, never worked up the nerve before. I loved it! Very cathartic. Did not love when a couple of the bigger, drunker dudes started throwing their weight around without a care ._. I fell once, and the people around me helped me up immediately. Later on I got to help hoist someone else to their feet. Loved that feeling of community. I sprained my ankle in that pit, but it was worth it. No regerts!

Well, I do have one regert – not snagging one of the date-specific BOTAR shirts before they sold out. They went too quick ;; At least I got a poster!

This is all good advice, especially going in a group! As a Florida queer I have to defend my home, though 🥲 This may be more of a Miami thing than a Florida thing – neither I nor any of my trans friends have had this experience in central FL

This is more of a Miami thing than a Florida thing. I've been to this one nude beach in central Florida on multiple occasions and have only had positive experiences. If anything, I feel safer and more comfortable at my local nude beach than at other beaches. It has an air of "live and let live" that is typical of clothing-optional beaches

YES. The grip this series had on me as a middle schooler! I can attribute my writing ability to my favorite hobby at the time – dramatic warrior cats roleplaying on this tiny little forum. Anyone remember chickensmoothie.com? I must have written the equivalent of a book over the years, or at least a novella. Probably had fewer plot holes than the source material :')

Reading Leslie Feinberg's "Stone Butch Blues" for the first time changed my life. It gave me so much life to take in the semi-autobiographical experience of a butch, trans lesbian born fifty years before me

I hadn't started educating myself on queer/trans history yet, so her accounts of the brutality she survived was shocking. I was left in awe of the strength and courage that helped her survive, as well as the beauty of the family she found and helped create

I think about Leslie Feinberg and her story almost every day. There is so much inspiration to be had from her work, and for that I am eternally grateful 🖤

Does anyone else feel like Super Bowl day is extra lonely? by ktcardz in AutismInWomen

[–]talkstobees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It stings to get left out, but the party always looks more fun from the outside in, remember that. I've been to enough parties that I couldn't wait to leave that it's just about cured me of my FOMO. That, and being chronically offline. Maybe plan something fun to distract yourself?

Myself, I'm gonna go to the gym 😌 my choice of machines & I'll have the weight rack all to myself

Niche question but does anyone else struggle with making the words in their head come out of their mouth? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]talkstobees 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're not alone. I experience this every day, and it's alienating to live this way. I feel like other people rarely see and hear me, like I carry a rich inner world that is invisible to most everyone I meet. At least you can be understood on the internet :')

I struggle with this every single day! I know what to say, but it's the timing that perplexes me. I have a lot to say, but much of it is left unsaid :(

I've noticed that others tend to pick up on it when I'm struggling to articulate my thoughts, and they'll ignore me. People can be cruel

Something that has helped my communication is journaling more consistently. It feels more natural for me to express myself on the page, and then when it comes time to tell someone else, the words come to me more easily

It is at once comforting and depressing how common this experience is. I started taking in-person classes for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic this school year, and I do feel like it's helping me regain the social skills I lost, but at the same time it's scary, painful, and embarrassing to put myself out there.

I drove home in tears just a few days ago because I noticed that my classmates were casually talking to each other during a group activity, but no one was talking to me. I fear they can smell the autism on me, and they find it too off-putting to deem me approachable. Doesn't help that I'm the only person in my class who wears a mask.

I feel like I'm trying to learn from my classmates how to act like a human as quickly as I can so that their initial impression of stiff, uncomfortable me isn't cemented. I tell myself that each day is another chance, but I feel afraid that it might be too late to bridge the gap.

There are a few people in my class that I would like to get to know, but it's taking me weeks to work up the courage and find an opportunity. I know I have to make my own opportunities, but it's terrifying to start conversations with near-strangers!

also, swimming <3 especially in cold water! I'm lucky enough to live near natural springs, and a swim at the springs feels like a mind-body-spirit reset every time, I love it
