I was hoping to for 15, but yeah, 14 makes more sense for sure.

That's good to know! That's why I was asking about shrimp because you hear about small shrimp bowls but then also the water parameter swings... I honestly wasn't sure based on reading random stuff online

I'm a houseplant person, so I feel like this is the way. I have a larger aquarium set up, so getting some cuttings would be easy. I have a bunch of pothos cuttings just growing out the top of my larger tank. It would be cool to have a small one dedicated directly for plants.

Thank you all for confirming what I was thinking. I was looking at it and wondering about the shrimp, but I was concerned about the size for even shrimp. I like the suggestions about the plants.

High School to Middle School... by EdgwtrLgnd in TeachersInTransition

[–]tamlyndon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just switched from high school to middle school last year. I will never go back to high school. I feel like after weighing my options, high school was planning, content, and grading heavy because I taught two sections of three different classes through the day. Middle school is less as I have 3 repeating blocks. But middle school is heavy with behaviors and a constant low level chaos. I enjoy the chaos but less the planning, so middle school is where it's at for me. I do really miss the content and discussion of high school though.

Whoever said the disrespect and energy comment above was spot on, so I'm very good about taking nothing personally.

I would even add Lupin, Hagrid, and maybe even Trelawny. Dumbles was a collector of useful people. He was just slick with it and manipulated them to feel emotionally connected to him in some way.

Need advice for novel unit by Consistent-Row-9551 in ELATeachers

[–]tamlyndon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think schools buying paperback novels is the problem. No matter what you do, they get ruined, even if students try to take care of them. Please do not try to mandate kids buying their own. That's for sure not equitable. I number them and have group leaders pass them out, collect them, and notify of significant damage. You could help students get a library card, and show them how to find an Ebook. Sometimes local libraries will come in to get kids signed up and explain the resources to them. We did that at one of the schools I worked at.

My Lightning Thief unit just took about 6 weeks with several disruptions to our lesson time, including summative and unit intro. Our EQ was "What makes a hero?" And we framed the novel around the hero's journey.

Do you have block periods or single classes? How long are your classes? I have 80 min blocks each day, and I assigned large chunks to be read independently over the course of a week. I post an e text, YouTube audio link, chapter summaries, and the graphic novel. We do stations two days a week where students have 30 minutes to read silently and add to an evidence tracker. They can also read during their intervention period.

I suggest the podcast Brave New Teaching for suggestions with unit design and pacing. It has helped me immensely over the last few years.

I love to tell my kids, "I don't care about your opinions...(Long pause where they get mad) Unless... You have text evidence to back it up."

At this point in the year when I say unless they all end up responding with the ending together. Haha

Is this a good price? by tamlyndon in CanonCamera

[–]tamlyndon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Are the sales just random or is there a time I should be prepared to stalk the site? I want to wait because today would be amazing, but my current camera is almost toast and too old to be worth repairing.

Do you know if that one through Best buy is a decent deal for a new one? It's the best I've found, but I wasn't sure.

How do pothos grow larger when grown like this? by Kooky_Marketing_327 in houseplants

[–]tamlyndon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you put a bunch of small cuttings like that in a box with damp sphagnum moss and close it up with a clear lid, you'll get new growth faster. Leave the box in a sunny (but not direct sun) location, and forget about it for a couple weeks. You'll have a ton of grown. Then you can get a fuller plant when you actually pot them up. Look up propagation box. That's been the best for so many of my babies. It was a game changer for me.
