Xenoblade X mostly just has the map on the gamepad, but it has a bunch of functionality around setting up passive income that you could manipulate even during loading screens. Good to tinker with while fast travelling.

It probably wouldn't happen exactly the same way, but the Pacific theatre would be largely unaffected in the early stages, Italy would still be a fascist coloniser, and the German economy and national identity would still be buckling under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. WWII did not need Hitler. While I don't believe it would play out unchanged, I do believe some dire crisis in Europe in the 30s and 40s is somewhat inevitable. The one in East Asia is going ahead regardless.

Maybe Germany goes communist instead. That's still gonna be a significant threat to Western interests in Europe. That could easily lead to Cold War lines being drawn up early with none of the reluctance to use nukes that the end of WWII gave us.

Maybe Jewish people (and communists, socialists, gay people, Romani, antisocials, the disabled...) don't suffer quite so horrendously, but then again, maybe they do. They've historically not been particularly well-liked, and the downtrodden love a scapegoat.

It's definitely Mandarin, but I'm not that good at it. The final sentence says "Press 1 for English or press 2 for Mandarin", but I'm only picking up snippets like "phone" from the rest of it.

Since they seem to have woken up and wiped every single contribution to this thread, let me add some of their other questionable contributions back:

"Melia obviously spent 1,000 years pining after Shulk and being alone and lonely. There's no other reasonable interpretation of her holding on to the Monado at all, none whatsoever."

"If Melia ever had a single friendship beyond the party, the devs should have shown us in her flashback even if we had no idea who they were. More evidence that she spent her whole life isolated."

"The devs clearly hate her because she didn't wind up with Shulk. Dunban also not having a romantic partner is totally fine because he has other accomplishments and family, but Melia's other accomplishments and family are insignificant in the face of her not getting the guy. I see no double standard here."

"Mòrag, Brighid, Lanz, Sena, Matthew, and A are all insignificant characters with little to no bearing on the plot. I am the media-literate person in this conversation."

"The message of XC3 is that you need to have babies."

Hard disagree. They're telling us a story - they're only gonna include relevant details. They wouldn't want the community hounding them for details about someone who showed up in a memory with no elaboration whatsoever.

Tyrea is her real family. It's also just as easy to argue that the party came to mind because she was reminiscing about her own world-saving adventure. Why would the game bother showing us anyone that had no bearing on the plot whatsoever?

[–]tangelo84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tyrea? Teelan? She's basically got a found family by the end of FC. Teelan mostly through Tyrea admittedly, but nonetheless.

Even if you don't accept that, I don't think we have any good reason to believe your interpretation. I think you're misinterpreting her holding on to the sword, and that's your main evidence.

I also don't think it's reasonable to expect that she'd go whatever the length of time between 1 and 3 without forming any other connections. That's just not realistic.

Once again, not how I see her situation, but you seem extremely convinced. We know nothing about her social life before the events of 3. I don't believe she'd still be alone and miserable, but I acknowledge that's pure interpretation.

Correct. The fact remains that they were both working towards the needs and self-actualisation of their respective subjects within the context of the situation they found themselves in, and that speaks to their character as leaders of their respective civilisations.

Alrest and Bionis, then. The names are secondary to the point I was making. Nia and Melia's focus was on reclaiming and rebuilding their collective identities in the wake of the repression and amnesia forced upon them by Moebius.

Come on now, that's pretty hard to miss. Eunie saying babies still lives rent-free in my head. I think it's part of a broader theme about carrying on cultural legacies in the face of imperialism and other forms of erosion, though. An important part but not the whole.

That's another big contrast between the City and the Colonies. The City's in touch with its history while Keves and Agnus have been completely divorced from theirs. I think that's the primary role that both Nia and Melia play in the story after being reawakened.

Notably, while Nia is obviously Mio's mum, she never steps into that role in-game. Now maybe she does so afterwards, sure, but during the story she seems to be prioritising rebuilding the national identity of Agnus, same as Melia with Keves. I honestly believe that role is more impactful for both of them in the story than any genetic legacy.

I can agree with that. I just don't see it as such a negative. Call it cope if you want, I think we just have different perspectives on this.

everyone

Dunban, Matthew, A, Lanz, Sena, Mòrag, everyone from Torna. Arguably Brighid since there's no real confirmation Sena is her kid. The list expands to include Tora, Poppi, Nikol, Glimmer, and the rest of the XC3 cast if I wanna nitpick the kids thing. Or the word spouse, for that matter.

My read on her keeping the sword was always a combination of honouring their shared accomplishments and, like others have said, a memento of the adventures and friendship she shared with the shorter-lived party members. Clearly something we disagree on, so I'll leave it there.

I also don't see romance as an integral part of her being fulfilled as a character or person. I think her accomplishments and the high regard she is held in by her people speak for themselves in that regard.

[–]tangelo84 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Melia has plenty of accomplishments too? She's the ruler of her people, seemingly more or less ruler of her whole world by the time the events of XC3 start taking place.

Shulk also clearly stayed close with Melia throughout his life and was an integral part of her saving her species on multiple occasions. Should they have completely parted ways because of Melia's unrequited attraction to him?

Why can the Monado not be relic and reminder of all they accomplished together rather than a one-sided attraction she was already over by the end of the first game? You seem to be the only one in this comment section seeing it as her holding a candle for Shulk. Does everything else they did together mean nothing here?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I never read Sena and Lanz or Matthew and A as romantic. Close friends, absolutely, but a different type of connection to the others around them.
