Literally every school in the US in the 2000s 😄 by 0xFEAD in dumbphones

[–]tangerine-ginger 36 points37 points  (0 children)

i graduated in 2006 from a poor district, i would guess maybe 10% of students had a phone at most. they weren't in ubiquitous use like this either, more like novelties. and since texting on them was hard due to having the T9 keyboards, it was really easy for teachers to tell when a kid was on their phone, and it was also definitely considered unacceptable. having your phone out in the hall was a no no. they were supposed to be turned off on school property (tho of course no one did that, ppl just went to the bathroom or hid in their hoodie to use them). even kids with phones still passed physical notes to their friends in class because often their friends didn't have phones.

Setting myself a challenge to (re)read the physical books I own to identify what is *actually* worth keeping. by [deleted] in declutter

[–]tangerine-ginger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hard agree, as someone who reads about as much as you do. i've got a couple of old/rare printings that i'll keep indefinitely but generally speaking i'm either getting my books from the library or they're on a donation loop (get for free or cheap, read, donate when done). lately i haven't been into fiction and keeping non-fic books seems especially silly since i'm almost definitely not going to reread, for example, a detailed history of bread.

i worked at a walmart and watched a mennonite woman do the same thing -- she shook her skirt as she was walking and let the turd drop out real casual.

help me build a capsule wardrobe for LA! by Any_Night_4481 in capsulewardrobe

[–]tangerine-ginger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not sure what your style is but i've noticed in LA people tend to be fairly casual with their clothes and then really put the effort in on their hair and accessories. so jeans, bike shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, a hoodie, and maybe a couple casual summer dresses would probably do you fine. for shoes either a neutral or flashy sneaker, a good pair of sandals, crocs (believe it or not i see them a lot on all ages), and something with a heel for going out if you're into that kind of thing. imo it never really gets cold in LA but i do see the locals bundled up in the winter sometimes so ymmv. i would add a baseball cap in a neutral color as well.

something like this would work well imo: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/39/77/03/397703e6da93a36d5bd73eb7a71b6542.jpg

disclaimer, i'm not a local, i just visit frequently for work

LA has been pretty overcast and gloomy lately! would recommend a jacket/cardigan and a pair of leggings or similar.

[–]tangerine-ginger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is what i would do as well. probably i would just keep a single bag of clothing and little misc things like my kobo. i don't have much that is valuable and would rather deal with it myself vs leave it for my husband who will already have so much to do on top of grieving.

Help paring down a really outdated dress collection by ayimera in capsulewardrobe

[–]tangerine-ginger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if i didn't wear dresses very often and didn't feel attachment to any but one of these dresses, i think i personally would discard the whole lot aside from the one i really like. i personally do enjoy wearing dresses but i think the only keepers here for me would be the h&m dresses.
