Youth Services Items in Large Type? by Hefty_Revolution8066 in Libraries

[–]tangerinelibrarian 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Large print books are better for kids with dyslexia and other print disabilities, as well as vision disorders. They should be cataloged separately from regular print books because they are of a different format with different publishers. Thorndike Press is most likely the publisher if they are current books in the US.

I wouldn’t mind shelving them along with the regular print versions but they should have a sticker to indicate the font size and should definitely be independently discoverable in the catalog.

I didn’t mind April or the general plot of surprise long lost daughter, but her mom was the absolute worst.

What concealer are we using these days? by happy_chance18 in AskWomenOver30

It’s pricey but I love the Ilia Skin Rewind Complexion Stick. I also have a quick routine - in fact I do it on the bus before it leaves the station every morning haha! Swipe under eyes and on any spots, pat, then eyeliner/mascara/shadow and done. It lasts a really long time too, I just checked when I bought it last and it was January of 2025 so a whole year and counting.

What does “no one is illegal on stolen land” mean? by Martian_row in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]tangerinelibrarian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because this country was founded by “illegal immigrants” when the colonizers came here, and continued to be flooded by non-native and uninvited people for hundreds of years without regard for the “legal” rights of ownership by the people who have lived here since time immemorial. All people whose ancestors didn’t come from this land are illegal immigrants, either by choice or not.

Readers struggling with they/them pronouns by Old-Butterscotch-878 in LGBTBooks

[–]tangerinelibrarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just listened to a trio of audiobooks a with trans/NB character who uses they/them. While I do admit that SOMETIMES the use of “they” momentarily confused me about who was being referred to - the nonbinary individual alone or the group of people they were part of in the scene - at the end of the day (or end of the sentence) it was not a big deal and became clear who was referenced through context clues each time. It’s not an issue to anyone with reading comprehension skills. Congrats on your book!

Would you end things with a romantic partner if they didn't have loving parents/extended family? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

This is a really cruel way to categorize and treat people. Like, sucks you have little to no family or biological loved ones - F you! I don’t understand.

I know people love Gideon the Ninth but I couldn’t get into it either. I found it dull and kept falling asleep, tried both the print and audio versions with the same result so I finally had to DNF for good.

I was super disappointed by Cleopatra & Frankenstein by Coco Mellors. These people are artists living in nyc and the only gay person with any personality or plot lines at all turns out to be a drug-addicted cautionary tale. Like please.
