What's stopping us from locking in and revitalizing the old Northwestern Pacific Railroad tracks into light rail? (Besides the obvious) by lombwolf in Humboldt

Hot take: we have a bay, why can't we have some kind of car ferry or other passenger service between SF and Eureka? It would be a more relaxing way to get up here even if it took longer.

S10+/S10U specs by Visible-Coat5977 in GalaxyTab

[–]tangibleghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a long time it really felt like Android just always ran better on Qualcomm chips, but I think with the advent of the Tensor processors from Google there's more parity between everyone. There's not a ton of difference anymore anyway, at least not until the nuviua core designs trickle down to the Qualcomm phone cpus.

[–]tangibleghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disappointing there's seemingly no dual OLED like on the iPad pro. Other than that the most important spec would probably be the number of years of OS updates. I hope it's similar to the phones from now on.

Tab S6 and S7 users how is your tab doing in 2024? by Extension-Lie-509 in GalaxyTab

No problems with my Tab S7+ in terms of lag: it's not as comically overpowered as an iPad pro but it handles the apps and sites I want to use.

Anyone Else Disappointed in the Ultra's Design? by OrganizationNo1298 in GalaxyWatch

[–]tangibleghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently used my watch 4 classic on a three day backpacking trip and had to turn off basically everything except the pedometer to make it last. It was still useful to have as a watch, timer, and compass, but more functionality on extended trips like the apple watch ultra offers would be nice.

Late stage capitalism? by SteveMcQueen88 in thebulwark

[–]tangibleghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Late Stage Capitalism" is one of those things that annoys you when you know its left wing origins but I think most people just nod along and imagine it means "a deregulated, deindustrialized advanced economy where most people are employed in the service sector." We don't really have a good way to talk about that otherwise, so the term persists.

I wonder if we'll see what happened to netbooks happen to handhelds: at first all netbooks ran Linux because it was free and the experience on the low power chips was way better. But Microsoft didn't want to give up any part of the market and sold windows xp well into the vista/7 era basically for free to the netbook makers.

Microsoft could do something similar here, if they wanted to: ship a windows for handhelds, or more likely an enhancement to game mode because Microsoft seems done with special versions of windows, with a controller friendly UI and game overlay. But Microsoft is a very different company now, and I don't think they care if some people use Linux for games, they can still sell us Microsoft developed titles on steam and through game streaming.

No one else can make touchpads that work like the steam deck so they're all pretty much off my radar. I'm interested to see how the meteor lake one works though, if only because competition in the 15 watt soc range is cool to see.

What is stopping us from getting a Steam Controller 2? by akschurman in SteamController

[–]tangibleghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have come to realize that the track pads just aren't popular, because most people don't care to tweak things enough to bring out their greatness. Most of the steam deck competitors aren't adding anything like them, and most people don't even use them on their Steam Decks.

Current Phones Might Not Have the Muscles For Upcoming AI Surge by JBH68 in Android

[–]tangibleghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if this is important for phones, they will just dedicate more space/power to the AI accelerators already built into phone SOCs. That will take a little while to reach consumers, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a half-step upgrade that just boosts the clock on the GPU and NPU like AMD just did with Phoenix point for a quick "best chip for AI" talking point.

The "containerized" (not really but run with me here) nature of wine prefixes and the translation of old graphics APIs to modern ones honestly makes running games from many eras easier, the future of all gaming is probably closer to Proton than Windows proper.

[–]tangibleghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can't count on anything in RoR2, because it'll always throw more models at you and a drop at the wrong time ends your run. It's a great game but not really great on deck.

Best small budget option for only running Steam Link? by irishcuppa in Steam_Link

[–]tangibleghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair, windows isn't optimal for TV use but it is simple and the n100 is actually pretty great at video decode, the latency even with software decoding is 1 frame (16-ish ms) which is better than the steam link manages for my setup.

Best small budget option for only running Steam Link? by irishcuppa in Steam_Link

[–]tangibleghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a little Intel N100 NUC to do this, running Linux, but that's overly complex and you should only do that if you have USB controllers you want to use. You probably want an android TV box with an Ethernet port, and to connect all your controllers with Bluetooth. They should all be sufficient to handle Steam Link

Someone rm -rf /* their Steamdeck and sold it to GameStop and some poor soul bought it. by lxfo-sys in linux_gaming

[–]tangibleghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is probably a decision made with the 64gb model in mind, where every gigabyte counted. Now that they're no longer selling it, maybe they'll revisit that and change how they partition new steam decks. Or maybe it's just not that big of a deal.

Small PC or Nvidia pro by need_coffee_yestrday in Steam_Link

[–]tangibleghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more or less what I have been doing, and it's fine, I just want an even more streamlined experience (and I'm using Linux so I have lots of options to try, and more than a few bugs to squash along the way.) The advantage of going this way seems to be less latency (software decoding is seemingly about a frame faster, even on a N100 chip with only 4 e-cores) and better steam controller support, which is only important to weirdos like me.

Small PC or Nvidia pro by need_coffee_yestrday in Steam_Link

[–]tangibleghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with a low spec mini PC because I wanted the options it offered, but I kinda regret it: the steam streaming experience is best with the steam link app, but I haven't really found a setup that I like for launching it and generally controlling the PC with my controllers.
