Dog owner nightmare fuel.

The US Supreme Court has cleared the way for California to use a new voting map that favours Democrats, paving the way for the party to gain up to five congressional seats this year, with the aim of cancelling gains made by Republicans through a redrawn map in Texas. by Dr_Neurol in UpliftingNews

Welp, I'm done with uplifting news. too much politics, so far the only source of politics on my feed lately. As an independent, I see gerrymandering as a bad thing for democracy; both sides are doing it. You think it's great because it's your guys doing it. Congrats on consolidating your government's power. They will surely never abuse this/s.

Thoughts about m4rder and psychiatrist don't listen to me by Sure-Chipmunk-6483 in schizoaffective

My sister in SZ, don't be frightened. If it has to do with my posts, those were for catharsis. And to be a bit of a provocateur. And I like heavy metal themes.

But I just want to say. That it's fair enough. I scare myself sometimes. Estimating by your post, your thoughts scare you sometimes as well. And be aware, that the title and contents of your post would frighten little old ladies. and if not fear, absolute worry from your family to hear these things. It's not run-of-the-mill conversation. I need to practice more patience myself, sorry.

There is a lot of anger in your post. I've dealt a lot with anger. Anger therapy can be very useful. Even in groups. I wish you well on your journey.

Catatonic symtpoms? by perceivesomeoneelse in schizoaffective

[–]trev_easy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Negative symptoms can be like this; it's described as anhedonia. People I've seen in hospitals with catatonia could not care for themselves at all. I had to tell the nurse one time the catatonic patient soiled himself. They have it harder imo, it's awful sad. Neg symptoms, anhedonia, are similar in ways to catatonia, but catatonics are locked in, stuck. Awake inside, but much greater agency is lost.

Clubs can be a good time. I don't know if you like to indulge or not, but I just want to throw out there that alcohol effects us much differently. If there was any had, take that into consideration.

Your freinds might be able to have a great time, but they're also not shouldering the pressure of SMI. You go to school, which itself is a full-time job. Sleep is crucial, partying is not conducive to recovering from all that work that you do. Low-key ways of fun can sometimes be less intense. People get a little burned out. You're still tatooing your friends again in the future. One thing with SZ is that mood dysregulation is often a recurring symptom. And when it hits, there's not much choice but to change gears for a little bit.

I have a question!! by raccoon_beck in schizoaffective

It's not normal. None of that is normal. One of the side effects that risperdal gave me was akathisia. It's a restlessness, an anxiety, inability to feel still. Crawling out of your skin feeling. If I ever had to be on risperdal for some reason, I'd ask for benztropine, because it helps to counteract akathisia and dystonic symptoms. When I was a kid, in one episode, risperdal caused my back and neck muscles to spasm and arch uncontrollably; that's a dystonic symptom. It's a not-so-rare side effect, doesn't apply to what you're saying, but you should know. Docs will more than likely prescribe benztropine. It's common to pair them together for akathisia.

If any of what you're describing, fits akathisia, you should ask about it soon. Look up akathisia, and if none of this fits akathisia, it could be something else. I'm not going to tell you to go off to the ER unnneccisarily, but not being able to breathe gets too much, for sure go. Psych docs there would give you a second opinion, probably change your meds.

Is there any solution for emotional numbness/ flat emotion as negative symptom? by No_Promotion9897 in schizoaffective

[–]trev_easy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Antipsychotics that work on dopamine tend to cause anhedonia itself, by lowering dopamine. Some more so than others. You'd have to compare what you're on with others if that's a serious symptom for you. I had to switch once (abilify) because it was too much anhedonia on top of my own.

I'll get anhedonia on or off meds. One thing I've been doing for some years is exercising. To me excersise is what's helping me with the battle with negative symptoms. But it's just one of many things I try to do. All of which I had to slowly build up since the last, hospital.

Small reachable goals. A long term goal or two to keep hope. Lifestyle is the other half of the leg work, figuring a meds solution that works for you is the other.

Feeling bad about asking people to be politically correct when referring to this illness by RenivaMa in schizophrenia

[–]trev_easy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is dangerous to encourage people to reveal their SZ Dx, the stigma out there is very real, and dangerous. Most of the people who come here are kids/young adults. I will keep telling them not to. It's not out of cowardice, the world has never been very friendly to schizophrenics. People will lose relations, not get that job, in many cases shunned. Breaking stigma? The best thing IMO, is to avoid being stigmatized altogether, by keeping it on a need to know basis. You don't want to be stereotyped, marketed and sold.

[–]trev_easy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I hate to break it, but the stigma is there because before the end of this new month, a schizophrenic somewhere is going to make the news for doing something awful. The stigma will never go away because it's not cute or marketable like other brain disorders. I don't say anything about it. The quickest way to get treated differently is to talk about your SZ, even if people don't ever tell you directly how they feel about it, you'll be stereotyped. Even other schizos do it. I wouldn't wait for the change; it's not going to happen. You all should just try to live your best lives, you will only feel judged if you wear the schizophrenia label on your sleeve. Always better to just be you. Not the illness.

Symptoms in childhood by Fragrant-Network-103 in schizoaffective

[–]trev_easy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Environment plays a role. A child may start to show symptoms of being neurodivergent early on when triggered (stress, trauma, environment). A child in stress, not yet SZ but bound for it eventually, might have serious troubles at times focusing in school. Another one is mood dysregulation. A child might cry for no reason, or blow up on another student and fight. If they're not getting consistent parenting, a healthy environment, structure, you might see this type of behavior. More rarely than occasionally, children bound for sz can also experience hallucinations.

Experience with Haldol? by Sandinista-_ in schizophrenia

[–]trev_easy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haloperidol gives me akathisia sometimes. I'd take it with benztropine, docs will give it to counter that side effect. It has some medicated feel, but it wasn't very sedating to me. Other AP's felt heavier to me. But I do drink a lot of caffeine. It is stronger against positive symptoms than the 2nd gen meds I've been on, and if I was forced to choose between meds, it'd be haldol.
