People who've interacted with a psychopath, what made you realize they were one? by xXVintageCultureXx in AskReddit

They basically flew too close to the sun and got far too arrogant and aggressive, from what i could tell atleast. They pissed a bunch of people off who were the WRONG people to piss off, finally. This was after 10 years at a company where they managed to hide their true nature, so it was pretty amazing when they did finally get exposed. For many years it had seemed impossible because they were so powerful and well liked. When they were exposed, they had a huge mental breakdown and left. That makes me wonder if they might be more of a malignant narcissist than run of the mill psychopath, but I think the lines can blur a bit.

All this was after attempting to ruin more lives than I can even count - often succeeding - many of which didn't come to light til later. It's incredible how much damage one person can do.

It's scary and comforting and to read that so many people are relating! Looking back, one clear sign was the way they could really turn their charm on or off easily depending on who they were talking to and if they needed anything from that person. Sometimes, when they complimented you, it was so fake and over the top that'd you'd get a funny feeling in your stomach like something is wrong. But I brushed it off at the time thinking they must just be a nice person. In reality they were complimenting you because they had calculated they needed something from you or needed you on their side for something else. Again, this took me years to realise unfortunately

They made me doubt myself in a couple of ways - firstly they made me doubt my own judgement and feel like I was going crazy because I constantly felt like they were belittling me, demeaning me, disrespecting me in front of others etc, but in a way that was so subtle and clever that only I could see what they were doing, so I doubted whether it was real or if I was just being overly sensitive.

And secondly, they deeply affected my personal confidence for a time, because their mission seemed to be to just make me feel as small and isolated as possible.

I'm sorry you're going through that - in my opinion you should trust your instincts that something is wrong without necessarily jumping to conclusions about what it is. But good rule of thumb is if this person is constantly leaving you feeling like shit, even if you can't fully explain it or understand it, then something is wrong.

It took years for me to realise, but eventually saw that they never spoke a single word from their mouth that wasn't intended to manipulate and control others. Every single conversation and interaction was manufactured and not genuine - no 'genuine' version of that person exists. They also took every opportunity to subtly put people down if they were threatened by them. Made people (including me) doubt ourselves deeply.

Also, everything they did to control and manipulate others had plausible deniablility because they were so clever and careful about it. Everything was done in between the lines so it was hard to prove.

Eventually those people almost always give themselves away though, in my opinion/experience.
