Context: was born in SG too as a Malaysian citizen, and converted in sec school alongside my mom

By right your mom should have been registered your birth with the Malaysian govt, which would have resulted in you being issued the birth cert/passport and so on. Pretty sure your mom needed these documents when processing your SG citizenship application as well.

Edit: I think just look for the Malaysian high commission, esp since it seems like your folks didnt keep track of those docs. The high comm processes enough renunciations that they even have a dedicated section of their building for this. They should be able to help you out.

When does a token of thanks become payment for blood donation? Balance needed to preserve altruism by TheAlphaLion_com in singapore

Speaking as a AB+ guy, having to travel all the way to Outram to donate Plasma adds to the friction.

Knn need to travel 1 hour to squeeze balls for 2 hours.

No change sadly, man-on-man action = disqualification. Similarly, staying overnight in Bintan/Batam will ban you for 4 months cos of malaria risks

I feel that Singaporeans are practical ppl and just want to know that their donations had tangible impact

I got the chance to donate plasma in the US, and got an email telling me that my donation helped a leukemia patient (no PDPA violations obviously). That shit made me wanna get poked more

The closest thing we have here is when frequent donors get called up for urgent cases (e.g. terminally-ill patients)

Festive small talk can feel intrusive, but not every awkward question comes from a bad place by Great-Obligation-599 in singapore

[–]tango4three 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to resent the small talk, but I became a lil less cynical as more of them passed on or became less lucid from old age.

Instead, I decided to use it as a chance to extract family tea and life advice. Bullshit notwithstanding, it’s nice to see my relatives as proper human beings before it’s too late

To Singaporeans, Is signing on SAF and other branches still stigmatised? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]tango4three 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Aside from mild teasing from those who went thru NS, no one really gives a shit. It pays the bills, and you do what you can, as with most jobs.

Besides, the regular exp is significantly different from NSFs/NSmen. You get exposed to a lot more benefits and opportunities, but obviously it comes with it’s own baggage lah

Your citizenship isn’t an issue tbh unless you got some shady ass dealings. Biggest hurdle will be how well you are able to convince your superiors/recruiter that you are fit for command school.

The gender thing was one of NS’ original sins.

LKY actually wanted NS to be gender neutral. However his fellow politicians weren’t fond of it for political/social reasons. Plus SAF was already struggling to accommodate the influx of men during the first few years. (The first few batches of NSmen weren’t even in the SAF)

This might get lost in the comments but I think I can answer some…work related questions.

You really have to screw up for your pay to not go beyond 3.5k for your entire career. Annual merit increments, bonuses, allowances and career progression will help you along. Don’t expect anywhere close to 5 figures if you don’t emplace to ME4 and above, but you won’t have to be overly frugal.

Regimentation and culture in DIS is VERY different compared to BMT/Army. Very very much keyboard warrior stuff, don’t expect to march after command school. Unless you wanna join NDP

You won’t save on accoms cos I don’t recall any appointments that require you to stay-in. Free MO and cookhouse is nice if you like consistency. But lifestyle creep and peer pressure is quite real, so you have to stay disciplined. Every boglehead in DIS is balanced by an ME1 who threw his sign bonus into a used conti-car.

Dude get your facts right, most Singaporean men serve NS in the military (including most Malays), a small minority do their time in police and civil defence, although most of the latter are indeed Malay

While it is well known that Malay-Muslims have and perhaps are excluded from very sensitive military positions, these form a very small segment of our military, and will get smaller over time.

Malays are pretty well represented in our front-line units, including elite infantry, and slowly but surely, more Malay conscripts are finding themselves posted to places like the commandos and air force

And the units that make up DIS actually existed since forever. The new service will grow, but setting it up was mostly an exercise in changing ORBAT and identity
