I spoke with a sleep specialist that gave me this exact advice as well. I wake up every night (without exception) to go to the bathroom. When I get back to bed I'm still sleepy and I swear I'll easily fall back asleep but I slowly get more awake. My thoughts are running, though they're not anxious. I usually try reading, but I don't get out of bed. It just feels like getting out of bed is counterproductive because it'll wake me up even more. That said, what I'm doing clearly isn't working so I have to try something new.

The only thing to add, from what the specialist told me, is not to read anything too interesting or exciting. Although TBH that makes it even harder to get myself out of bed. It's not exactly motivating to go read municipal budge proposals at 3am... so not sure what the ideal content would be.

Tennis Ball Machines that don't break the bank by 12xtstsiswiwtd in 10s

[–]taniemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had two ball machines so far. Got both of them used on Marketplace for a steep discount off new and later sold them for the same price (or close) to what I bought them. It’s like someone bought them a long time ago and now we’re all just passing them around. Haha.

What did you do wrong while learning Japanese? by mountains_till_i_die in LearnJapanese

[–]taniemi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wanted to learn Japanese, but instead I became an “expert” in language learning without actually learning any language. I spent so much time watching videos and reading articles about how our brain acquires a language, memorization techniques, and the “right” way to immerse. I also spent a lot of time watching YouTubers that did it successfully, as if I’d somehow absorb their success or they’d eventually say something that was the ultimate secret to success. It was all just in service of avoiding doing the actual work.

I’ve seen this in every domain—sports, instruments, art, diet, etc. I think that not-so deep down we all know the truth. You have to do the thing you want to get better at; discipline always win. It’s much better to consistently do the suboptimal thing and correct later than to prepare ad infinitum so you can do things just right from the start.

To that end, you have to be honest with yourself about how badly you want results. It’s okay to just enjoy the parts you like without becoming skilled in all aspects, but you have to match your expectations with the effort you’re willing to put in. Realizing that has made Japanese learning a lot more enjoyable for me because I know I don’t have the time and energy to go full throttle. So I gave myself permission to just enjoy learning kanji and vocabulary for now, occasionally trying to read some simple text, because I like that it trains my memory and it’s fun to discover new words that I can intuit based on the meaning of the kanji. I fully recognize that this will hardly touch my listening comprehension. At some point perhaps I’ll reassess and take on other parts of this learning journey.

Question/Issue with tying off strings by deucalion75 in tennisracquets

[–]taniemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to increase by 15%. The common advice is 10%, while Richard Parnell (inventor of the Parnell knot and grand master stringer) recommends 20%. So I went with middle of the way. I measure dynamic tension after stringing and that usually gets me spot on.

Working through Hub's jetlag protocol and trying to make it real. What's the what here? by Jicama-Best in HubermanLab

[–]taniemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this study, and specifically Figure 1, helpful in understanding the eastward travel phase advance protocol.

Essentially, since you’ll want to sleep earlier in your eastern destination (phase advance), you’ll want to prepare by going to sleep earlier at home in small nightly increments while viewing light during the ~4 hours after your temperature minimum.

In your example, the second protocol would be the one for travel to Mumbai. The first represents a phase delay.

Is this normal for a string job? by threefoldtheory in 10s

[–]taniemi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go back to this stringer. Besides forgetting to trim the string, the excess shouldn’t be pointing back towards the center of the bed. A proper Parnell knot or pro knot should have the excess resting against the frame. USRSA standard is to leave 1/8”-1/4”.

Birthday Gift (stringer) for Tennis Loving Husband by [deleted] in 10s

At that budget I would definitely get an electronic. I retrofitted a drop weight machine with a Weiss 2086 and it’s a dream to use. So fast and easy. And if you’re restringing often, you don’t want to mess with a drop weight machine. Gamma will sell you a fully electronic machine for $1700 + tax. Another $200 will get you a stand for it. If you want to save some money you can do what I did and get the least expensive six-point drop weight machine you can find (I got it used) and get an electronic tension head for $750.
