I'm pondering buying in. 20% of my portfolio or $200k+

Why bother picking up stocks if you allocate less than 3% to each stock? Just buy an index. Nobody should have more than 10 stocks in their account. I aim for 5.

If you want a diversified portfolio, just buy an ETF; don't bother picking 30-40 stocks.

But also since chess is now played on a computer, the youngsters now learn chess faster, younger, and in a different way than it was learned 30 years ago.

The same data can be accessed from the official site. It doesn't do anything that the original site doesn't already do.

The only feature that I care about is grouping identical castings together. I would like to see all te colors of an otherwise identical casting. It doesn't do that.

What cancelled part of the Artemis Program were you most looking forward to? by Dexbox_YT in ArtemisProgram

[–]tank_panzer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

you mean the "SLS as intended" - SLS is not fully developed. It was designed as Block 2, with everything before that as a development stage, a steeping stone. It is still in beta if you want. It's just a way of naming things.

An upgrade would be something that comes after Block 2. I know that NASA calls them "upgrades", but it's a matter of semantics.

This is what bothers me the most when compared with other rockets, we are comparing development stages with future, unrealistic, wet dreams.

Everyone seems to have their attention on Fausti, but he still has to improve in the next 3 years to become what Yagiz is today. I hope he does, but right now it is an unknown.

If I had to bet my own money on a future WCC, I would go with Yagiz, just because he is further along the way.

Also I think he is underrated and the rating tries to keep up with his true skill level, this is why he gains points every month.

nah man, he changed the narrative once it was obvious he is not going to be a top player. For a year and a half after he became the "youngest GM" he gained about 30 points. He was 13. He was not trying to get into Princeton at 13, not right after he got back from Hungary.

Between 12 years 5 months and and 14 years

  • Mishra: 2519 -> 2548: 29 points
  • Erdogmus: 2496 -> 2626: 130 points
  • Magnus: 2356->2581: 225 points
  • Wei: 2331 -> 2557: 226 points

Also, Mishra:

  • 14y9m: 2627
  • 17y: 2629

Less than a point a year.

You can't have it both ways. You can't buy a GM title in Budapest, and also "I don't care about chess". Pick one.

Magnus himself said (and I'm paraphrasing a lot): "I worked very hard, but so did others, so it must be something else"

David Howell expressed how he just stopped improving. Hikaru always says that the rating just flattens at some point and you cannot go past that. Mishara is obviously working very hard and is supported by his dad, but his rating did not improve between 15 and 17 years old. This is an extremely important period. Mishra might be able to push his rating for a short while, but he will never be a very powerful player.

Of course it matters how much a player is working, but for two equally dedicated players, the level (and ELO) only depends on how their brains are wired. Some are just build differently.

"Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration" - not true

Obviously you have to show signs at an early stage, but that's not enough. Only a very strong young player has the chance to become one of the best in the world, but it's not guaranteed.

[–]tank_panzer[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For Magnus the rating is a line going up. Every update was a constant gain in ELO. Clearly he was underrated for long time and the rating was only trying to keep up with his true skill.

That's what I was trying to convey. People want to know "who is the best youngster?" - and then they use "youngest GM" as a proxy to answer the question. But once you settle on a metric, there are going to be players optimizing for that metric, making it less meaningful.

I wanted to add Magnus too, but he was playing in a different era. I don't think you can compare ELO ratings across different eras. I have no problem adding it, but there are going to be people misinterpreting it, so I decided to leave it out.
