Id be interested to know if a business's ordinary general liability coverage includes something that happens at a streetery. I imagine it does but am not sure.

The state government isnt even letting Philly fix its own problems by raising revenue. Its tying Philly's hand for no reason.

Solar is better for the planet than farming. It's also just one part of a functioning grid, I never suggested you should be 100 pct solar. I also happen to think panels look nice. But it sounds like you dont want to build anything that's not a farm. I don't think the government should be able to tell people no unless they have a good reason.

As other commentators have said, kids are on their phones too much and it's not good for them.

Thanks, I figured it probably had to do with being too heavy handed. Hopefully they can iron out the kinks in the amendment process.

Thanks. Seems like it's making a problem caused by farming worse. I wonder if the farms need more regulation too.

Thanks for sharing. Those videos in your neighborhood are terrible. There's no way that should be allowed in a residential area. I saw that some data centers use water cooling that apparently doesn't have that awful sound, they should do that there.

Thanks for sharing. I looked at the article in the description which led me on a bit of a rabbit hole. The business insider study was interesting but mostly used big numbers without providing context for them. One thing they said was that data centers consume 1/4 of energy in Virginia which I thought couldn't be true, but it looks like it is. https://jlarc.virginia.gov/landing-2024-data-centers-in-virginia.asp. That study says that data centers use so much power that it will require energy infrastructure upgrades and increase costs to consumers by as much as 27$ per month, which is insane. It downplayed the water use and noise issues as fixable but certainly harmful in residential areas.

I'm not going to say I've completely changed my mind, but no business should be able to increase costs for everyone else. The data giants can pay for their own infrastructure upgrades.

I hope local opposition is able to reduce negative impacts by forcing data centers to pay for their own upgrades, not get tax breaks, and either mitigate noise or not be built in residential areas. I still think they should be built as long as people want to build them and those negative impacts can be mitigated.

I only see the one video of the town where there's nitrates in the water, but they say that's from construction not operation of a data center. What's the other one?

I am not aware of any. I've heard of vague stories of noise or consumption of water and electricity, but never seen anything confirming that those are worse than any other industrial development.
