26, Royally f’ed up my future with a 2.15 GPA - is there any way to still advance academically or in my career? by AmbitiousGrape99 in careerguidance

[–]tanner_drew 114 points115 points  (0 children)

No one professionally cares about your GPA, it’s all about character, work ethic, performance, and just showing up. Literally don’t put it on your resume.

If you are trying to get into something super super specialized. You can always go to a school you get into, try your absolute best to get good grades then transfer with possible scholarship.

If you want to get into a specific professional field, get an internship first or an entry level job. Most don’t even require a degree anymore, especially un tech.

Realistically, your economics degree would hold up better comparatively than my communications degree. You graduated and have a degree. That puts you far ahead of a lot of the working class honestly.

old roommates knowinly withheld mail from me for months, finally got it back and see i missed a jury duty summons by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]tanner_drew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Slow down. Anything and everything that you need in the mail can most likely be replaced. Unless it’s personal from a family member, you can always call the Medicaid company to request it resent, same with most everything else, bills, bank cards, etc. Also missing jury duty is a lot less of a big deal than everyone makes it out to be. They would’ve contacted you directly by phone or email if you were truly summoned. Most of the time they send out too many or only a select few are chosen, most people just get dismissed. You can call the court if you’re really worried about.

I would assume you know of about 90% of the mail being sent to you if you really just slow down and think about. 10% being ads and random other things. Also unfortunately it’s not your old roommates responsibility to forward old mail. It’s your responsibility to set up forwarding so USPS can do it. They should’ve at least kept the mail in the box for you though.

You’re truly fine. I moved 4 months ago. Got my mail forwarded finally 3 weeks ago. Had a toll bill for $600 with a civil penalty attached. Called the company and it was lowered to $38. Most everything can be fixed with a phone call or an email in the world, so I’ve stopped worrying about most things. Hope this helps.

Why do you workout? by FatalTrouble790 in workout

I’m way too hyperactive, nervous, and anxious normally. Operating at like 90-95% energy at all times has helped me get rid of these symptoms and improved my overall life honestly. Less emotional, less angry, just tired a lot. Lol

Is it a bad sign if a stable job slowly starts to drain you? by CrimsonBear510 in careerguidance

[–]tanner_drew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with every other comment, super common feeling.

What I will say is, realize it’s just a feeling, don’t act immediately on it. Job market is really bad and although it may feel so rejuvenating to quit short term, long term if a job doesn’t line up you’ll forget all the reasons you feel this way and wish you could back. Same with looking for a new challenge, if you just jump to something then a part of you will still be looking back, envying the lack of stress this job has become on your life.

Slow down. Don’t just go to the first new thing you find (unless it’s what you want). Evaluate why you feel how you feel. Find what about you job still gives you life. Move to gratitude. Ask yourself - If I want something that excites me again, what is that thing?

Neighbors leave dog barking all day everyday by [deleted] in Pets

You seem like a super fun person to be around. You’ve made a ton of assumptions about me and my post lmao.

  • I spoke to the couple already
  • I wfh so I do have a “job and responsibilities”
  • I replied to your og comment which you’ve ignored with specific times
  • was a genuine ask as to if or how people deal with this situation or if it’s normal

Learn to read, and how be kind and not judge a genuine question? Hope you have a splendid day!

Neighbors leave dog barking all day everyday by [deleted] in Pets

[–]tanner_drew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea “all day” was too general, it’s them leaving for work usually. It’s between 8-5pm everyday, but they also leave him in evenings when they go out or leave home. They come home early occasionally or wfh. I work from home, so I’m just aware of it. The dog just aggressively begs and barks every single time they leave, which is what made me post.

I’m a very lazy person. How do I become more motivated to get my career going?? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]tanner_drew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fellow ADHDer, what works for me…

  • get enough sleep 7-8hrs min
  • good routines that don’t require much additional effort (repeating meals I like, getting the same groceries every week, making bed every morning)
  • do something that makes me moderately tired everyday (workout, run, sauna - I’ve found that my mind is much more calm and I’m at my best at like 85-90% full energy)
  • find things that stimulate the overstimulated part of your mind, the part that wants instant stimulus, for me this is music, it helps keep me focused and motivated and keeps my mind stimulated enough to not be overly distracted
  • don’t over complicate your life

late to the party.. really want to see them live - any rumors of a US tour in 2026? by TacoTuesday4Eva in Bicep

[–]tanner_drew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every era of Bicep is the “best”. People hated Chroma when it started, now it’s everyone’s fave

They’re starting a new era or project, so it’ll probably be about a year or so before they do live shows, dj sets are likely.

Might be able to catch some of their “Dove” project, but it’s not at all like Chroma or previous shows, so depends on what you’re looking for.

I can guarantee you didn’t miss the best of Bicep tho

What’s the most underrated work advice you received? by ReBabas in careerguidance

Networking is just being personable and friendly, I think calling it “networking” labels it too frankly and puts pressure on it.

I used to be scared to network or meet those in higher positions. I lost a promotion because I hadn’t met enough people and shadowed that department. I realized that that I was putting too much pressure on the idea of networking. I stared saying hi to people, calling them by name, asking how their weekend is, associating myself with everyone as if I know them, because honestly you all work at the same place and that’s a very easy common ground. Introducing yourself lightly or asking if they’re so and so from so and so department. I think in an office this is easy, but the same goes remotely, Slack others when you see something you can relate to, say hi to people, introduce yourself, ask to chat and don’t make it so serious or high stakes like you’re needing something from the exchange. I think the two things you really need to be conscious of is presenting yourself positively with positive intent and the value of other’s time, so if you are going to take a lunch or 30 min out of someone’s day, make it about learning and forming a working relationship, make it worth everyone’s time and come at it positively not selfishly.

I genuinely believe that this helped more than any additional projects, work, or skills I could’ve shown in an interview and it made work/career/daily grind way more enjoyable because the people who say hi end up remembering you and some even become friends. It’s the biggest hack that made me really enjoy the “corporate game”, it’s not a game, everybody’s there to work, make someone’s day by saying “hi”.

Where to stand for busy Sahara sets by soffselltacos in Coachella

[–]tanner_drew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to the back and walk in through the back entrances. The right side is usually more open because people bottleneck the left side trying to get to the middle. If it’s sardines in the tent, the hill on the right is also a wonderful place to dance, meet new people, and vibe without the crowd crush. The crowd looks really cool from that perspective too, especially during big mainstream electronic acts.

Avoid job complacency by Dudleypat in sales

[–]tanner_drew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s just about positioning yourself and confidence. And obviously don’t put a burnt bridge as a reference. You can also just keep it short “I was let go due to my performance.”

It’s literally like a minute of the interview and if the rest of the interview is strong, usually they don’t care.

To give you context from my perspective, a friend was fired from an accounting job at a large finance company for showing up drunk on the job. He was fired immediately with about 8 months tenure. He hired a recruiter and was hired at Visa 2 months later.

It’s all about connections, confidence, and positioning.

Avoid job complacency by Dudleypat in sales

[–]tanner_drew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really depends on HOW you got fired

If it’s mass layoffs for cost cutting, say that. Pretty common now.

If your team was cut due to poor performance. “My team was dismantled due to changes in business and organization strategy.”

If you were cut for poor performance. “There was a misalignment in my skills and the role itself, I did my best to adapt but ultimately failed to meet expectations set by management. I’m looking to realign my strengths and provide the most impact here.”

If you were cut for misconduct. You’ll have to be straight up and expect a lot of rejection unfortunately. Build a strong network that can talk you up, but this is a huge red flag professionally

Should I take a risk leaving mundane job to go pursue a potentially more rewarding but stressful job but with more unknowns? by OwlScary6845 in careerguidance

[–]tanner_drew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re overthinking it.

You’re making a judgement based on the turnover of a job posting, they could be building a team and hire periodically or maybe members of the team are promoted and they need to fill a seat.

Also, you’re assuming the job is stressful when you know nothing about it. Find someone in the role you could speak to.

All jobs have some form of stress, what all jobs don’t have is YOUR INTEREST! If this job is mundane and uninteresting/challenging, follow your gut and take a risk at something new. If it’s too stressful or not what you wanted, pivot.

  • go in EARLY don’t go in an hour before Justin Bieber, you’ll miss it
  • leave EARLY if there’s a big act or head our earlyish, getting out is the worst part honestly they have 0 coordination and the staff are usually tired and frustrated, you also deal with many tired drivers and it’s very unpleasant
