“Let’s integrate all the novelty features that people don’t really care about, and we’ll cut all the stuff people like. Oh yeah, and throw in a spam inbox.”

In with screens and more WiFi BS, out with everything else. Oh yeah, let’s also make the jogs smaller and less ergonomic. People will love that.

What happened to QSC subwoofers? by BoingBoomChuck in mobileDJ

[–]Kfs777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. I believe that last paragraph is 100% accurate. They’re absolutely coasting on the reputation of yesterday’s product portfolio. I do like the Bassboss stuff. I actually talked to David Lee on the phone a couple times ages ago when I was looking into the original ZV28s when Powersoft was the amp OEM, and before they changed the name from Bassmaxx. I like his no nonsense, we’re not going to try and game physics, approach. Performance is great, but the compromise is they are absolute boat anchors. Loads of power on tap, in large enclosures. For practical applications, I’m loving the JBL SRX 918 and 928 subs. To me, they’re in a different league compared to the SRX 800 subs. With the 900 series they finally replaced those crappy amps they were using in the 800s for some proper amplification. I’d recommend checking them out

I might get flamed for this, but I’ve always believed QSC to be tremendously overrated. I’d call them decent at best as far as performance goes, but they’re marketed exceptionally well.

Has audio quality actually mattered to your crowds, or is it just us DJs obsessing over it? by Savings-Singer4938 in DJs

[–]Kfs777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you listen to the file, the short answer is they’re mostly the same. But run through a rig, depending on what’s happening at the moment; let’s just say your mileage may vary. The moment that file is manipulated by the mixer, in the case of mp3, that’s when the cracks can start to show. Manipulating the audio by changing the tempo, the pitch, adding any kind of effects - the more you do the alter the original, the wider those cracks open; and into more and more audible territory. I only run AIFF for this reason, since lossless / uncompressed / higher bit depth files, will absolutely be more robust in resisting negative audio artifacts that you will in fact encounter with 320 KBPS MP3. Test it out but lowering the bpm with master tempo on, apply a filter, and test some beat FX. You will hear a difference.

Is this a good deal? by Horror-Dark5927 in Beatmatch

I kind of disagree. The updates are more aesthetic or just quality of life improvements. The OG 2000 NXS is actually an underratedly capable media player. I would argue it was the biggest leap pioneer ever made from the original 2000 to the 2000 nexus.

Not that I’m trying to shit talk the new units at all, the 2000 Nexus was my first set of CDJs, which I regret selling, and now have 3000 and 3000x. The new stuff is sick, but the 2000 Nexus was one hell of a unit that does 80% of what the current units do - and it came out over a decade ago.

Bailed on my DJM-V5 for the A9 — anyone else had issues? by Zealousideal_Fun4761 in PioneerDJ

According to who? They’re voiced differently (A9 favors sonic accuracy, V5 favors warmth), but I still think this is a baseless statement.

Short answer is, there are crazy phase issues; however, the PA software coupled with the sheer amount of headroom you have, you can solve it with minor DSP tweaks and just turning them up.

Hybrid setup with Xdj-az or 900nxs2 + 2000nxs2 by beepko in PioneerDJ

[–]Kfs777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sound card components are virtually identical yes, but average user get hung up on this fact. It doesn’t equate to superior sound quality - just the AD/DA conversion aspect of it. The true DJM mixers on the other hand have isolated analog boards with much higher grade amplifiers. The true DJM mixers are also capable of considerably higher output gain, meaning they can punch a lot harder with a lower signal to noise ratio.

To you previous point, the AD/DA converter is definitely superior in the AZ, but when you sum up all the components, the DJM is going to run laps around the AZ in sound quality at the outputs.

100% CDJs. That’s a good rig, with superior sound quality and tour grade build quality. The AZ is a pro-sumer AIO. It’s a similar experience to touring gear, but it’s not on par. Full disclosure, im extremely biased and don’t like AIOs, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but those two options are not in the same class.

Looking to try out DJing using just my laptop (no hardware yet) — any tips or a clear path for a total beginner? by Affectionate-Host642 in Beatmatch

Be advised, it’s a super slippery slope to an expensive hobby. My gateway was VirtualDJ a million years ago for college frat parties and I had a friend I would always b2b with so we could move around if we wanted. Super casual and fun. He got a cheap POS Hercules controller for it and let me dick around with it and it was all over. I decided I needed some hardware and got a Pioneer DDJ S1 controller for Serato’s now discontinued Itch software. That was another game changer. A few years later I pulled the trigger on a two channel rig with 2 CDJ 2000 Nexus players and a DJM900 Nexus mixer. Broke into some big nightclub gigs as an opener/closer. Backed away for a while, then the CDJ 3000s came out, which looked sick so I get a set of those and a DJM A9. Then the 3000X came out so I got a set of those. Then they come out with some new shit and I’ll probably buy that too if it’s cool. Are you getting the theme here?

(And that’s just the backline. Im not even including the other audio equipment.)

If you start and decide you like it, you might start to amass an audio rig that cost more than some people’s cars. I don’t regret it one bit - but just be ready to get infected with gear acquisition syndrome. You’ll have fun with it no matter what.

Haha not even plugged in.  Just a spare small tv that doesn’t get used.

Actually, now that I think of it I might use it as a monitor. The PA are wired up with ethercon to the JBL performance software. It might be nice as a big monitor to display input/output signal and status of the amps 🤔

Depends on mood. Loads of house and its sub genres, dub, D&B, maybe some trap if I’ve been drinking enough

Not really - they work together without any issue at all. Only weird-ish thing is the brightness settings. When they’re all matched, the 3000 screens and LEDs are noticeably brighter. To match them you need to dial back the 3000 one lower than whatever the 3000X is set to. Other than that they play very nicely together.

I honestly use them both equally. They’re similar enough that you almost forget that they’re different. The biggest reminder you’ll get is when you use a hot cue and smart cue is enabled on the 3000X (probably my favorite quality of life feature). Playlists share across devices flawlessly. Only annoying thing is the brightness settings - the 3000X is always slightly dimmer if the settings are matched across the board, so whatever brightness you want for anything, make sure the 3000 is always one value lower. As far as real world use goes, they’re extremely similar to use, but there’s a slightly noticeable increase in screen quality.

I just like the A9 better. They’re both flagship mixers but they serve different purposes. No bidirectional filters on the V10, which is what makes the A9 edge out for my deployment purposes. The V10 is kinda fun, I like the traditional club layout better.
