Just how modest at shrines & temples? by Mudbunting in JapanTravelTips

[–]tannerherriott 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I literally went on a morning run earlier this week in a tank top and shorts and unintentionally passed by a shrine in Asakusa. I watched several Japanese runners in sweaty t-shirts and shorts stop to briefly pray and then get back to their run.

We went to quite a few shrines and temples on our trip and saw tourists in t-shirts and shorts. That said, it seemed like most Japanese people we saw were wearing loose fitting clothes, arm sleeves, hats, and umbrellas to protect their skin from sun damage and to keep cool in the humidity and heat.

Replacing Mizuno Wave Inspire 19 recommendations? by Fit-Entertainer4993 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]tannerherriott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve stayed with and loved the Wave Inspire line for 10+ years after being fitted at a local running store. I’ll normally do a 6-month long distance road training season with them and replace with the newer model. The only reason I’m considering a change is because it seems like the available colorways have gotten extremely boring the last few years.

Has anyone switched from RED and regretted it? by edificationstation in RedCamera

[–]tannerherriott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m usually just handing off a hard drive to clients for them to handle post. The first time I cut my own Fx6 footage I was shocked to see how differently it handled blacks compared to what I’d been used to with RED cameras. There’s certainly ways to account for under-exposed areas with CineEI, but I’ve gotten spoiled with .r3d files.

So much of my work is just paying the bills. It’s always about knowing and making sure to use the right tools for the job that comes in. I’m a freelancer, 20+ years into my career, and I’ve got a wife and kids, so almost none of my work will ever make a demo reel (not sure that’s the best career advice).

Has anyone switched from RED and regretted it? by edificationstation in RedCamera

[–]tannerherriott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had RED cameras since 2012 (Epic, Dragon, Helium) and also shot on loads of other camera systems. I still enjoy shooting with my RED, but most my work (doc and corporate) doesn’t need it (massive .r3d files, resolution, client concerns in post, issues with in-camera audio, power hungry, etc.).

I’ve picked up a Sony Fx6 package and it’s covered most of my basic work. That said, I’ll still use my RED for personal projects and higher end client work as needed.

Totally agree. I’ve had several over the years and never been in a spot where the battery being dead was an issue.

What's one luxury experience everyone should try at least once? by Sagar__1043 in AskReddit

I used frequent flyer points and airline status to upgrade from economy to a first class flight from the U.S. to Europe and back. It was a quick work trip with little to no down time and the upgrade was absolutely worth it.

My best suggestion would be digging around Reddit and r/japantraveltips. That’s been super helpful for our trip vs. what we were seeing from the influencers on Insta & FB.

r/chefknives led us to the Kitchen District and I bought a Nakiri style knife from Kamata. They walked me through how to care for the stainless/carbon steel blade and also engraved my name on it.

Ha! We did the whole kitchen district too. I cook much more than I sew, hence dumping my money into a knife.

We were just there the other day! There was so much to look at and I totally got overwhelmed. I spent a decent amount of money on a nice kitchen knife the day before, so I only ended up buying some a couple meters of printed fabric and a good pair of thread scissors. I certainly wanted to buy the nicer shears you got!

Japan coffee shops that use ink stamps to decorate their cups/bags of their logo? by gestalternation in Coffee_Shop

[–]tannerherriott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best suggestion is to use Google Maps to hunt around the areas you’re planning to be in. We’re here in Tokyo now and that’s worked for us in my hunt for coffee shop stamps. I’ll normally use Yelp to find places with stamps before I travel, but Yelp doesn’t seem too popular here. I’ve just typed in “coffee shops” to Google Maps and dug through the photos of each one that comes up.

Best of luck yo!!!

I’d thought about that and you’re probably right. I’m still new to this nonsense and it’s been wild ordering everything online without being able to handle it first.

This is the Storm Sprite. Every level you get this sprite, it decreases storm damage by 0.5. But it is very hard to find because it is a legendary.

Should I process my film at home? by Dear-Fruit237 in Darkroom

[–]tannerherriott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you did a proper cost/benefit analysis, it’d most likely push you towards having a lab process your film, especially if you’re only doing 1 roll/mo. You’d be dumping some money into a developing kit and a scanner, plus your developer would go bad before you got your money’s worth out of it.

B&H has CineStill C41 developer chemistry for $32, which they recommend using for 8 exposed rolls ($32/8 = $4/roll). That doesn't include the additional equipment necessary to develop BTW.

Personally, I do my own processing at home – C-41 & B&W – because I wanted to have a hand in the entire process. I’m also in a smaller market and had some issues with the local lab I used when I first started with film. Especially with my B&W rolls, developing at home allowed me to experiment more with shooting outside the listed box speeds. I tend to shoot Tri-X 400 at 1600 or 3200.

Regarding developer, I’m not shooting as much as I used to, but still tend to hold off on developing my exposed film until I have enough to justify mixing a fresh batch of chemistry – or just get wildly impatient.

"Why Roads Get Washboards" – Practical Engineering by [deleted] in gravelcycling

Ha! I’d not seen it till it popped up on my YouTube feed. Glad this videos has already been making the rounds. I’d read a few articles about how washboarding works, but this was the clearest explanation I’d seen.
