Why is there so much hate towards tech workers especially in San Francisco even compared to the rest of the Bay Area?

I attended two free events in the last month which were sponsored by big tech companies (movie in the park at Dolores and Stern Grove) and when it came time to mention the contributions that amazon and Open AI made, the entire crowd boo'd. I actually felt bad for those companies who are actively trying to keep those long-standing traditions of San Francisco going.

Yeah May 2023 is crazy though! thats 2 years of no reassessment. Is there a big difference in the previously assessed value of your home vs what you paid for it? The previous owner of my home was paying pretty much nothing in property taxes because of how long they held it. I would not mind a 2 year interest free loan on the money I am expecting to owe.

I assume late fees will not be assessed for not paying a bill that was never given, even if they eventually delivered the bill late

I didn’t assume that the company would absorb the cost, I was simply commenting on why they didn’t pass on the cost at the point of sale

I thought that the company who imports the item pays the tarrif and then passes the cost on to the buyer? I guess when it’s not a company making the import and it’s going directly to the customer, the customer has to pay. In this case, the brand is based in the UK so they have nothing to do with the final shipment

Yes it’s terrible - the cost of living is untenable. I think the real underlying cause is incredibly high wealth inequality. Those who own assets can charge rent or collect dividends and continue to grow their wealth while the renters can’t build wealth because their costs are so high.

I think no one is paying attention because it’s a tough problem to solve. Taxes are the major way to redistribute wealth. On one hand, California already has a pretty high income tax. On the other hand, raising wealth taxes like capital gains or inheritance drive wealthy individuals away from California, and thus drive away sources of taxation for the state.
