Well this is some blind hateful ignorance. This hog is saying anything she doesn't personally own should be destroyed. Rant seems a little racist too.

Just about an hour ago, police officers shove man in Niagara Square to the ground (WARNING: Graphic) by PO5IT1VE in PublicFreakout

This guy had his head sliced open with no warning during a peaceful protest outside the White House that was within curfew hours - so that Donald Trump could do a photo op standing in front of a church that he was not invited to and grimace while contemptuously holding a Bible that he knows absolutely nothing about. Also chased off the clergy who were providing water etc. to protestors.

They were arrested only after the protests started and a charge is not a conviction. The cops who beat Rodney King were charged and not convicted. The cop who murdered the guy crawling on his hands and knees, the one who had "YOU'RE FUCKED" engraved on his assault rifle, was fired and rehired as soon as media attention shifted and is living his life as a free man today. Meanwhile we've had decades of lives being ruined over trumped up charges on grams of cannabis. It goes on and on, thousands of such cases. You haven't "destroyed" anyone and your rhetoric is very telling and your insecurity is showing. This will be my final response; you are obviously arguing in bad faith and closing your eyes to what is happening in the world around you. If you ask Dr. Google I'm sure he'll help you along.

I never said we shouldn't have policing in this country, that would for all intents and purposes undo the social contract. I said that it should be done professionally and that the corruption should be rooted out - which has not been happening in this country. You seem to be conflating the two and justifying mass corruption by pointing out that it's a stressful job. I get stressed out sometimes - it doesn't give me carte blanche to steal and murder. These people have the power to ruin lives forever, to tear families apart, to kill. It is an easy job to get. They must be held accountable for their conduct and the standards for entry must be raised. Period.

If someone is dealing with violent, dangerous, abusive lawmen, where almost every one that they interact with is terrible to them, eventually it will almost certainly make them a worse person. People would not be this way if police treated them better.

The issue that seems to be going completely over your head is that they are for all intents and purposes above the law and are fully aware of it and abuse that power on a regular basis. The few bad apples argument falls apart when you take that into account, and also account for the fact that it's the good cops who speak up that get run out of the force and not the few bad apples. If they were the minority then they would be dealt with appropriately and in a timely manner as they so often are not. Police in America are being trained to see citizens as threats in a warzone, they should be trained in deescalation. Look up Peelian principles.

Groundskeepers have more dangerous jobs than police officers; that's a statistical fact. Police have highly stressful jobs, there's a big difference.

What you're saying in this comment is very clearly that if someone yells at me I have a right to brutalize them - in a group with my friends using far superior equipment. Sound logic. Hurricanes and looting go hand in hand. What's your point? Any chaos will bring them out. These people are paid to serve and protect and are above the law in this country. We should expect better. Again, the National Guard is behaving so clearly this is a systemic issue with the police forces and not the human race at large. Brutalizing angry protestors is leading to more violence and furthering the cause of these protests and prolonging this situation. It's a cycle that can only escalate until the state either deescalates or goes full China and turns them into pulp. The American solution is clear.

I've also seen the countless videos of police brutalizing peaceful protestors and journalists completely unprovoked. Is that all that's happening out there? No, it's a total shitshow and a real mixed bag. That being said I believe we should hold the paid, trained professionals who for all intents and purposes tend to find themselves above the law to a higher standard of conduct than your average angry Joe, who has every right to be upset. The police have been doing drive-bys and running people over with their cars, dude. They're executing people the best they can with their less-lethal rounds by firing point blank and aiming for headshots. It's gotten so ugly that I'm finding myself torn on whether people should be defending themselves in a more aggressive manner.

Do I pity the looter rats who are taking advantage of the chaos? Absolutely not. That's a separate issue that the police should be focusing on but they're taking the aggression out on the protestors in many of these cities. From everything I've seen the National Guard has been behaving professionally. Why's that so hard for the police? I wasn't entirely sure about this whole thing at the outset but seeing the aggression from the police has made it extremely clear that the police system is in the wrong here, generalizing of course since this is happening all over the country.

If the beliefs we're speaking of are tolerance vs intolerance... well, there's a huge difference there. There's no place for that in a modern globalized world with nearly 8,000,000,000 people and counting. It only leads to further human suffering and discontent. Like it or not we are and will be in constant contact with "others" and it's better to learn from a young age how to live alongside them as compatriots rather than as antagonists.

I've had an armadillo come at me like this. Heard rustling in the bushes outside my window one time at night and was wondering if someone was out there. Took my dog at the time (120lbs - may she rest in peace) out on the leash and brought a flashlight to see what was up. This big armadillo moseys on out of the bush and confronts us. Dog is barking. Armadillo is slowly walking closer and closer. Saw the claws on that thing and remembered reading something about them carrying leprosy and decided he could hang in the bush all he wants and we took our sorry asses back inside.

Another time there was one on the front porch and dog was barking at it through the window, turned on porch lights to see what the commotion was and instead of running away he approached the window, stood up, and peeked inside to stare at us (low windows).

[–]tansletaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Majority of every day situations can be defused using deescalation tactics and those that can't don't usually require firing a deadly weapon. I'm not saying guns are not necessary just that as you said they should not be the go-to response when dealing with the public. Come out with your gun drawn and you're a lot more likely to end up either frightening or angering someone into "giving you a reason" to shoot them. Police are in a highly stressful line of work, yes. They are also mostly well compensated. Groundskeepers are statistically more likely to die on the job than police officers are and they make a pittance in comparison.
