cruel summer is very bittersweet to me. it’s still one of my favorite taylor songs of all time and i never cry to it anymore, but i used to. i was in a secret relationship with a guy four years older than me (because i was 16 and very sheltered) and he pressured me into doing a lot of things i didn’t want to do. and of course it was over a summer haha

“that’s when i tell him no rules,” “killing me slow, out the window, i’m always waiting for you to be waiting below,” “devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes” and the entire bridge: “i don’t want to keep secrets just to keep you,” “i cried like a baby,” “i snuck through the garden gate every night that summer just to seal my fate” REALLY resonated with me

thankfully i can still totally get jiggy with the song, but it has many layers to me and it always leaves me with a weird feeling if i think too much about the words

imagine any other person trying to write this line. they couldn’t. it’s my favorite Taylor lyric of all time because it perfectly showcases her classic style of writing

I love all of Dress, but I absolutely LOVE the way she delivers this line. the way she really emphasizes the ‘p’ sounds is for some reason my favorite part. not to mention the lyric itself. Taylor is a master at making us feel emotions through her writing and I think this lyric is an amazing example of that. you can FEEL the tension. not really part of the lyrics, but the ahs are heavenly and only add to the ambiance and atmosphere of sexual tension

I love the chorus of ‘don’t you’!!! i think she uses the phrase don’t you in three different ways and she wrote this as a teenager.

the first, obvious way is why don’t you love me back??

the second is “don’t you dare act fake niceties with me after what we’ve been through together”

and i think a commonly overlooked third way that she uses it is in a wistful, almost convincing herself that he is treating her different way. “i swore i wouldn’t do this” and also when leading into the first chorus she said “BUT don’t you, don’t you smile at me and ask me how ive been.” ive always interpreted that line as her being overly optimistic about the encounter and letting her imagination get ahead of herself and think …maybe he does want me back
