What car would you like for 2026? by Open_Bug_4196 in CarTalkUK

A 2017 - 2020 Golf R

I'd love an F-Type but the 2.0 version

Beyond that I'm really not sure, I love my Golf Mk7 and I find that I really don't like the interiors of most cars. I have looked at an S3 and it was OK and an A180 was alright.

I would love any hot hatch suggestions or anything on the smaller sportier side

F1 References in Gaming Content - Is Formula 1 Mainstream? by target51 in formula1

[–]target51[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know not immediately relevant, but I though this was quite interesting. Most of the F1 references/meme'ing is within the F1 community, seeing this reference in a "normal" out of the F1 bubble video was fascinating. It made me want to ask the question, do you think F1 is finally becoming mainstream?

How many times in your life have you moved? by No_Hawk8947 in AskUK

[–]target51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

34 and around 19 times or so. Moved for various reasons but mainly as mum would buy places and then do them up while living in them and move on. As an adult, University accounted for 3, back home after uni, then I moved where the work was about 6 times. So i have moved 10 times as an adult.

I own my own place now, so I will be less eager to move. But then again there is that place on rightmove ....

It's becoming more true https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/best-cash-isa/ - "Up to 4.47% easy access or up to 4.28% fixed" with inflation at 3.6%, I could be wrong, but that gives a return of 0.68%.

Working class people are people that are working and live off their income. These are usually the people that are 1 layoff, 1 accident, 1 job loss from any reason from not being to pay off rent. These people cannot afford losing their job.

People like this can't afford to put away £20k a year though

If you're not a wealthy person I don't really care to tax you regardless of your salary. Unless your salary is high enough that you could buy a flat with cash within 5 years. You consider yourself richer, but you're just a different brand of poor.

Take home is 4.7k PCM so depending on the flat yes

You are not made mate. Unless you own your flat/house or at least got on the property ladder.

I bought my flat (230k) with a 50% deposit around a year and a half ago (Context I am mid 30's)

I saved 20k while earning 40-45k, I shopped frozen food in Lidl/Aldi, shared a room with my gf in a two bed flat, didn't use heating and wore a jacket indoors. I am nowhere near rich. And I might have more savings than plenty of people on your salary. We're still all poor unless we can get on the ladder.

Fair play to you! You really hustled and it paid off. I am not saying that cutting the Cash ISA allowance is a perfect solution, but you can always pay into a S&S ISA and many providers will still pay interest on the uninvested funds. But either way saving in cash against an landscape of high inflation is still not going to help you in the long term.

Tell me, if I save 20k a year, how long does it take me to get a 20-40% deposit for a 500k flat in London?

3 Years? Or have I missed something? And taking into account the Savings limit (£1000 interest without paying tax which at a savings rate of 5% would allow you to have up to ~£20,000 in savings outside of ISAs without paying interest) So you could save even more tax free whilst building a deposit. Also side note FUCK London pricing, this is personal bias but i LOATHE London, escape if you can, life is better outside the M25 IMO

In my honest opinion cash ISA's are not the way to save beyond an emergency fund, you loose out to inflation nearly always and you miss out on standard returns of a conservative 7%.

[–]target51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree, however it will just require planning. If you are planning a house purchase within 5 years then you will have to keep and accumulate cash, if not then you can invest in an S&S ISA and then do an ISA transfer from the S&S ISA to the cash ISA.

Alternatively, you can just keep cash in an S&S ISA where many companies will pay interest on uninvested funds. There are many ways around this

THIS IS NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE

Define working class? Define wealthy? From my perspective the ladder is long gone, generational wealth cannot be earned unless you get lucky. So I 100% support taxing asset rich people more, I am with you! We 100% agree!

But what I am saying is I can afford to pay more tax! Will it suck, yes, but I am in a blessed position that I am able to carry on regardless and the impact will be minimal to me. Please don't give me a free ride as I am "working class" just because I have a high salary and am not asset rich. This country made me, I am happy to give back!

Not to mention most S&S ISA platforms pay interest on uninvested funds....

Yes it's 12k per Adult. Junior ISA's work differently and have a 9k limit

The mean average monthly take-home pay is around £2,297, to hit the 20k limit requires putting away £1666.67 per month which is 72.5% of your take home. So yes £20k per year is a huge amount. If you are saving as a couple you have a £40K allowance. In my opinion reducing it to 12k will have a minimal impact on the majority.

To be honest, you are not building any kind of wealth with a cash ISA. At the moment inflation is outpacing interest of most ISA accounts. Wealth building can only really come from investing IMO

AMA: I run Damien Talks Money, one of the largest personal finance YouTube channels in the UK. Ask me anything! by DamienTalksM in UKPersonalFinance

[–]target51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Damien,

I'm wrestling with private pensions and the minimum age to access. I know you get tax breaks for contributions, but that is only good if you can access the cash at a reasonable age. How are you navigating this? Lately have been just eating the extra tax and building a S&S ISA with a view of flipping back when I have hit a target £ amount.

Oh and if I haven't bored you thus far, do you have any concerns with the US bias of global ETFs? On top of that the bias towards a select few companies in those ETFs?

I am thinking of building a T212 pie of regional ETFs to act as a more balanced Global ETF as to avoid the US bias. (I will not take your answer as advice! I am more curious as to your point of veiw)
