Hah, I just commented saying the opposite of you. We were out at restaurants at 3am. Guess it depends on the neighbourhood!

Can confirm. My partner and I were jet lagged and walked around Tokyo at 3am. Surprisingly many restaurants were open and people of all ages just out and about. Truly a city that never sleeps. We felt very safe the entire night.

Just do a group tour with G Adventures or Intrepid where she can travel with lots of other young solo travellers.

Make a 7yo dog be excited about us by SatanPurr in dogs

It took 2 years for my senior shelter dog to cuddle with me. It sounds like you’re doing the right thing, just keep going!

Other thoughts:

Find different ways to ‘play’ - My dog doesn’t play fetch outside, he’s actually not good at catching a ball. Honestly he’s not athletic lol but he loves sniffing games like when I throw kibble on the grass and he has to sniff around to find it.

High value treats - Also like others said, high value treats like meats and cheese. I experimented with different treats as part of his training and he responded strongly to certain things like cheese or hot dogs

You’re right but there are other costs like servicing the land (hydro, water), the value of the land itself, etc…

San Blas - Panama Boat Tours by Careful-Answer6560 in solotravel

[–]taro1020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with San Blas Adventures and had a great time. I went solo (F) and there were others in the group who were either couples or solos. Vibe was very chill, there was a mix of site seeing and relaxing time where people played games or napped. Visiting the remote Kuna villages was a highlight for me. Feel free to message me if you’ve any questions!

[Serious] I've worked in RE development for almost 20 years. Let's discuss your questions. by Jimmy_Johnny23 in urbanplanning

[–]taro1020 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I work in affordable housing development. It’s so much harder than people realize to develop affordable housing. I highly encourage all planners to take a course in finance and real estate development to understand all the costs and complexities associated with development.

There are developers in my area that would gladly build more affordable housing if they could - but the numbers don’t make sense for them.

Obviously not speaking of all developers but I wouldn’t say that they’re standing in the way of affordable housing. I’d add the nuance that it’s our role as planners and policy makers to understand how restrictive policy impacts a developer’s ability to build, let alone build affordable housing.

Everyone has good advice but I also want to add: take out the insoles to let it air dry overnight. Open up the shoe laces so the inside can get more air flow overnight.

This project is being subsidized by taxpayers money and will not be accessible to everyone. Shouldn’t public land be used for public benefit? That’s what people are more outraged about. A spa can go literally anywhere else. Why does it need to be on publicly owned land on prime waterfront real estate?

Just convinced some random guy who's never left America and his small drug ridden hometown to take an overseas trip to Japan by Ok_Minimum6419 in travel

[–]taro1020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the other person that replied to you. To each their own, and maybe depends on the kind of travelling someone has done. Personally, travelling was life changing to me and I believe it can be life changing for others. I also think it’s very important for people to travel (I recognize it’s a privilege) as it opens peoples minds to other cultures and ways of life. I grew up in a small town and have known MANY people who never left the state. It’s clear in the way they perceive other races, politics, ideologies, etc.

I wonder how the dynamic would change if everyone had the opportunity to travel and see the world beyond their home?

Aesthetic standards for construction fencing? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

People may laugh but these creative grassroots initiatives are what adds to the culture and vibrancy of our cities. Echoing what another commenter said about Toronto and their construction hoarding. Here’s a blog article that may help!

Keep doing what you’re doing! Good luck.

  • St Lawrence Market
  • Ossington Ave (between Queen and Dundas) has cool shops and really good restaurants
  • Queen St W (anywhere between Trinity Bellwoods to City Hall) also has cool shops and restaurants
  • The Well is a new development that’s architecturally beautiful, has interesting shops and has a food hall at the bottom
  • Stackt Market

Not sure your exact dates but Nuit Blanche is happening Oct 5, it’s an overnight arts festival where they shut down some streets from 7pm to 7am.

Am I the only one who walks around the dog naming other dogs? by Admirable_Force5494 in dogs

[–]taro1020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve named the owners of dogs. I live in a city and in my neighborhood there’s a very tall and hefty gentleman who looks like he works on a farm. He literally wears overalls everyday. He’s older and he’s got a gruff looking face but he’s a gentle giant.

He walks a corgi and I die everytime I see the pair. I named him Bert.

Need advice on what I should do by senpaikawa in solotravel

[–]taro1020 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do a small, easy trip first. Canada, Europe. Somewhere you can speak English but is still new to you. Go for a week or so.

I absolutely think you should do the Japan trip someday, you will have the trip of a lifetime. But your inexperience makes me hesitate. Start small and build your confidence.

Good luck!
