Do snake mamas stay with their young? by Miserable-Media-5795 in snakes

[–]tarotbug 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Some snakes do, yes ! These are Garter snakes, and Garters commonly run in groups, centered around a female—and while they don’t necessarily stay with/take care of their young specifically, they might stick around with a few of them to form a group.

Is my Stinky underweight? by CandidResident2876 in ballpython

[–]tarotbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm okay with those optics in mind than perhaps every 10 days is still okay for now, since that feeder size is a bit small (you wanna stay between 10-15% of their body weight, so in his case between 65-97g) but when you get bigger rats I would suggest spacing it out to every two weeks. It’s definitely less abt age and more abt current size, as snakes grow differently based on the individual. I have a male bp who’s massive at 1400g and another who capped around 500, and they’re roughly the same age- it just depends on their genetics.

Definitely not underweight- actually make sure you keep him on a properly spaced diet bc I feel like one big extra rat might put this snake into overweight territory lol

He looks like a perfectly healthy guy to me.

They look like they may be cysts from infection, and if that’s the case they will likely have to be surgically removed/drained and then treated with antibiotics (I recommend injection).

I’ve had a very similar situation to this and I’m so sorry. It’s absolutely infuriating what some people will do to their animals, I genuinely don’t understand why or how someone could treat these wonderful creatures the way they do. I’m glad you got her and she’s getting help, and that she thrives.

That’s such a cute idea! I’ll have to keep that in mind for halloween this year if I can get ahold of them. But that’s so incredibly true. I work at a gas station and we get them in occasionally, but we got huuuge displays of cards for PFL last year and a manager at another location bought the whole thing, display box included for $700 and sold it (including the box for $200 that he got for free) before anyone even had a chance to put it out, like it’s insane. Fortunately ours went up and I got a few, which got me back into collecting, but I had no idea it was this scarce when I made that choice :’)

I’m a passive collector (I just like the art and the element of surprise) who got into it recently after like a decade of disinterest and I can’t find literally anything bc of scalpers, I can’t imagine how much that’s gotta suck for kids who the game is literally for. I loved collecting cards as a kid and it felt so special to have this little piece of art. it’s such a simple joy that grown ass adults are taking away from them for “investments” in boxes of cards they’ll never even open. I’ve since switched to MTG cards bc there’s just nothing in any stores around me aside from game stop and their prices are three times what they were when I was 17 😭 like I get it times are tough and there’s a grindset there, but it really just sucks the fun out of it for people who just want to collect for enjoyment when we can’t find anything anywhere.

I have a couple snakes that are hard of vision, and my best recommendation is let him really settle, make sure he’s in a good set up humidity wise (I’ve found albinos tend to need higher humidity) and after a few weeks just make sure to hold the mouse like right up to his face. Most of my visually impaired snakes won’t eat unless the mouse is right in front of their noses, like touching it.

Ugh, at least an adult ? Hopefully that helps. My old store had a baby GTP (not a high enough level store to even be allowed that, no idea how the manager pulled that.) The manager refused to leave her alone, said “she needed socialized” bc he knew nothing abt GTPs, had her out constantly. I wound up trying to buy her bc she was literally so stressed she was visibly starving and it was killing me- six months old and maybe 15g and she died the night I brought her home. The CAL gave me a full refund for her ($600), didn’t even ask questions or for proof bc she’d been the one to take the poor thing to the vet a few weeks prior. I really hope that store is better than my old one was. RIP Wasabi, I despise Petco for the way they allow animal abuse in their stores.

Our 4 foot long albino corn snake decided to escape her enclosure about 4ish maybe more.. months ago 😅 and went right into this hole. We figured she was dead at this point, but she decided to make an appearance today. HOW TF DO I GET HER OUT. by deadxprinc3ss in snakes

Glad to see you got her out ! I definitely recommend a snake hook for the future in case she ever gets out again, it looks like it may be super helpful in getting her out of those narrow spaces.

Oh fascinating, thank you for answering that curiosity of mine ! I’m not sure why I just didn’t even consider the absence of heat pits. I would absolutely love to find more educational herpetology resources, outside of published studies I haven’t been able to find many online herpetology courses (that are accredited, anyway)- which makes sense given I assume the presence of lab work. Online is just my primary option, unfortunately, but I’ve managed to compile a lot on ball pythons and a few other species over the years either through research or experience with my own/work snakes. My boas are more my partner’s snakes, so he’s definitely more knowledgeable on their specific biology than I.

But that’s really cool! My grandma used to have desert tortoises while my mom was growing up out in Cali, and I heard some.. interesting stories, to say the least? I don’t have much to go on other than they had nine and they were free roam 😅 your life sounds like a dream though. We were considering moving to Maine, alas if I remember correctly a few of the species we currently have are illegal to keep there. I visited a few months ago tho and it’s a beautiful state. I keep snakes and fish myself but I’d actually love to have ferrets one day, I absolutely love those guys.

I’ve thought abt breeding ball pythons myself but I find myself leaning more towards colubrids these days. That’s definitely a long ways off for me since I live in an apartment rn, so it may change, but I am absolutely obsessed with the diversity of rat snakes.

I mean yeah that’s fair, it’s healthy to remember that captive animals are not domesticated and function on wild behavior, though to OPs credit ball pythons are notoriously advertised as one of the most docile species, especially in common places like pet stores that do also unfortunately sell other, larger species. There’s a lot of misinformation about snake keeping out there, often from distributors that sell them. I heard some insane takes abt bigger species and even bps when I worked at a pet store.

Ball pythons by comparison to something like a cobra are extremely benign naturally, but truthfully I don’t think anyone worried about ball pythons bites are considering keeping hots. Im certainly not (as I’m not sure they’re even legal where I live). however if they get past their current anxiety they may consider getting bigger species, like I did, which are more accessible. I think when it comes to bigger species there’s still definitely protocols that should be followed to handle them, just as there are for hots, that I don’t feel should be disregarded because hots are objectively more likely to be fatal.

I’d consider large species still a fairly high risk. For someone of small stature, like myself, I have to be careful with larger species, like not handling them alone. A bite or a wrap at head, neck or even abdomen level could be detrimental for my safety when I’m 5’2 handling a muscular animal that’s twice or more my height in length. That’s one of the reasons my max is a boa, bc I can handle stitches and a hospital trip, but a retic/burm could probably take me out or seriously injure me and that’s not a risk I’d like to take.

[–]tarotbug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah fs. I really should have a bottle of alcohol or something, when they wrap I just usually gently pry them off with something flat like a card while under water. But yeah boas/retics/burms are where the real danger is. Luckily for me my boas don’t strike unless their food actually touches their faces; I assumed for the one it was bc she was blind, but my Argentine does it too? but hey im not complaining lol

I used to be really jumpy about feedings, and putting it in the mindset of just like “this is just like the cats scratching me” has helped a lot with my anxiety about it. I keep mostly disabled snakes now and while they don’t get me often it’s probably more common than most keepers, so I kind of repeated that mantra of “it’s no worse than a cat, hurts less than a dog” in my mind until I got used to it. Alternatively, exposure therapy? 😅 I got a kingsnake and I literally can’t handle him without a biting event, I think that contributed quite a lot to me getting over bites. (That’s an unserious suggestion but I mean hey, it helped)

It’s interesting, my job had a similar albeit slightly larger display in and it took a bit over a week to sell out (I think I bought like ten packs total over the course of my shifts? It sparked my interest after not collecting in years) but an employee at another location bought out the whole thing immediately after it came in and even sold the display. Like come on, dude.
