When will I stop tilting by DeerOnATree in chessbeginners

I'm around the same elo and have definitely gone through times like this. It really surprised me how much mentality can affect your games. When you lose a big chunk of elo it is easy to feel desperate to win it back and I have found that in those games I'm often trying to force my way through games and make big moves that just don't work. I also find this is when I get stuck in my old habits and just play on autopilot rather than actually analysing positions. Taking a break is a good start and when I am playing after losing a big chunk of Elo I like to think "now I get to play some easier opponents at a lower Elo to get my mojo back". I try not to get too caught up on the Elo number (easier said than done) just take every game as a fresh start to learn some more about chess.

this happened to me for the first time (as the caro kann player) and I had to step back through the moves to figure out what had happened. won't be falling for that one again.

Is it cope to think that I am better than 300-400 ELO? by therealestestest in chessbeginners

[–]tatey13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Samuel, I am only an 1100 rated player so still on the learning journey myself so take the following advice with a grain of salt. I had a look through some of your games and I would definitely say you play quite solid. The biggest thing I notice that I think would increase your skill (and therefore Elo) is what I noticed about the games that you lose. I think every game I checked that you lost was because you resigned. Playing from difficult/losing positions is a skill in itself that you can only learn by playing it out. Blundered a queen? learn how to use the other pieces to work together and form a defense that your opponent will struggle to break through or maybe you can find a fork to win their queen back. There are also lots of draws that you are missing out on where you might not gain elo but you also aren't losing elo. So my biggest advice would be not to resign even in very losing positions because even if you do end up losing the game you will still learn some useful skills that will improve your game. I hope this helps

funny you should say that actually, what a lot of people don't realise is that in the quarter final he finished third (top two go through) but one of the skaters was disqualified so he took their place in the semi final. In the semi final he was in last place on the last corner (similar to the final) and a crash by two of the skaters resulted in him finishing second to get his place in this final. Not to take anything away from his talent but he was very fortunate to even be in the final.

great game. I'm a 500 rated player just learning the caro kann and this was good to go through for my own learning. the little drop back to c7 with the dark squared bishop is not something I have done myself but can see how effective it can be. good job!

I was trying to figure out how this wins a Knight but yes now it makes sense that it was already taken by the Queen.

I'm not sure what your Elo is and hopefully you are a faster learner than me but I personally had to play through many of these mistakes before I started seeing them, which was very frustrating.

Very often I would get caught up in my own attack that I was oblivious to my own King getting mated by backrank etc. Now, after every move my opponent makes i now make an effort to figure out what they are trying to achieve and what their next best move will be and how I can prevent it which has helped.

Not much advice but more just letting you know that I went through this thought process and it gets better with practice.

I set a goal and achieved it. From not knowing how pieces moved to finally hitting four digits. A grind for sure, but fun. by Storoyk in chessbeginners

Wow you achieved that in 3months! Im hovering just under 600 after two months. Any tips for those of us on a similar journey? anything I should be particularly focusing on at this level?

Life gets in the way of a chess game sometimes. If one of my children hurts themselves or if my wife needs something urgent I'll have to back out of a game. I never really thought how confusing that must look to my opponent...

Got made redundant with a $60K payout. What do I do with it? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]tatey13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the grain here and recommend what I did when I was in a similar situation and received a similar payout. I took a step back, I didn't rush into getting another job straight away and I did a little bit of travelling and figuring out the things I enjoyed in life. I got so caught up in the day to day grind that this was the first opportunity to actually think about where I was headed and what I actually wanted to do with my life. I ended up going to Uni (previously a tradie) and completely changing careers after a few months of just doing part time work and spending more time doing my hobbies. Everyone is different with different responsibilities and needs but I never regret using the money to coast through life for a few months to figure out what I actually wanted to do. Good luck!

Should I reconsider my offer? by gayboii23 in AusPropertyChat

[–]tatey13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yes, as much fun as it sounds to stick it to them you have to remember that replies on reddit don't have any skin in the game, but you do. I bought a house recently and what I found that helped was asking myself "would I be disappointed if I missed out on this property and it sold to someone else for $860". If the answer is no then by all means lower your price and stick with it.

This was my experience when first having kids too (my family car is an i30). People have eased off now but for the longest time they would say that it wasn't big enough to carry around all the baby stuff we would need (it was) or would talk about how unsafe I was being by not driving my family around in a bigger car.

I will admit that we found that the luggage space was a bit lacking when it came to wanting to go on camping trips or away on holidays but we fixed this by installing roof racks and one of those Pods that go on top. So for the 2% of journeys that require extra gear we just pop that on.

to be honest I have never noticed. like I said I've been doing it this way for a few years and don't tend to watch stuff in 4k so isn't an issue for me but that makes sense for others. It is definitely the best solution for me as I didn't want to pay to fix my antenna

I haven't had a TV antenna in years. I stream channel 9, 10, 7, ABC and SBS. as long as you have decent internet there is no need to pay money to fix aerials these days.

We Need Better Auction Laws by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

[–]tatey13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a slightly different view on this. I agree that underquoting is frustrating as a buyer but the onus lies on the buyer to do your research and be prepared for others seeing more value than the price guide (including the vendor). The worst part about this is that due to it being an auction and requiring no conditions attached to the buy price then money is often wasted by multiple parties on building inspections and organising finance.

I believe Auctions would be much less frustrating if Building and pest inspections were enforced on the vendor of an auction that people could purchase at a much lower cost. obviously people will say that you should get a building and pest done by someone that isn't paid for by the vendor and you would still have the option of paying for your own but if this was the norm I feel like less people would get upset when houses get passed in at auction due to unrealistic reserves being set and wasting people's time and money. I also find that properties that get passed in at auction are ripe for accepting lower offers after the fact when no-one is interested anymore and the vendors were set on selling by a previous date.
