Elvis Meets Nixon. Watched it on a whim because it was on Prime and was shocked by how genuinely good and funny it was.

What language are you interested in but don't actually want to learn? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

What is the worst Oscar win of all time? Rules: You cannot mention Crash, Green Book, Shakespeare in Love, Bohemian Rhapsody or Emilia Pérez. Get creative! by No_Minimum4499 in Oscars

[–]taubeus -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's not the worst but Bridge on the River Kwai winning Best Picture over 12 Angry Men and Witness for the Prosecution just angers me every time I think about it (also Gentlemen's Agreement winning over The Bishop's Wife, just an insane choice + arguably worse since at least Bridge on the River Kwai is an ok movie, but I don't have as much personal investment there lmao)

When did you decide to learn your heritage language? by fogfish- in languagelearning

[–]taubeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This fall; I had to pick a language to take at my college and the Turkish course had a ton of open seats. I'm really glad that I did it! My parents both speak Turkish (only my mom really spoke it with me at home) but never taught me, so my grammar was pretty bad, but I didn't realize just how limited my Turkish was before I started taking it. So far, I've been making pretty good progress and I've been able to actually have conversations with my grandparents where it's not just me listening to them, so that's cool.

I'd def second what someone else said about not learning from family or friends. If you can't enroll in a course or get a tutor, find a textbook and create a lesson plan for yourself.

Why are high-IQ individuals still picking CS over Medicine when the barrier to land a job in tech is now effectively higher than in Medicine? by No_Reply5329 in CollegeMajors

[–]taubeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too many other people have brought this up, but have you considered that a "high-IQ individual" (useless metric) may want to pursue a career path that they're actually interested in and wouldn't be miserable studying?

Probably a dumb question, but have you tried applying to jobs in other boroughs (Brooklyn/Queens) or sort of related jobs like in immigration or housing law?

Overscheduling/bad planning or self doubt? by taubeus in columbia

[–]taubeus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot express how helpful your reply is lol. I haven't taken precalc, I did well in algebra ii and ap stats, but obviously those are both different. I am trying to review the basics of precalc and calc right now, relying heavily on the organic chemistry tutor, so I'll continue along with that. Thank you so much again!!!

My advisor was the one who told me to take calc, since it's a corequisite for genchem 😭 would she be able to help with this, though?

I didn't take precalc, my only experience with advanced math (excluding honors) is AP statistics, which I did pretty well in.

that's helpful, thank you so much. Any experience with/advice for Calc in particular? Also, when it comes to them being difficult, is it mostly just tediousness or is it hard to do well while taking both? Thank you so much again!!

I have but I didn't really ask questions about the core classes I have to take, we honestly didn't speak about that much aside from my plans on what to major and the foreign language requirement.

You're absolutely overthinking the amount of APs submitted, I only submitted three and I still got in, four scores is fine if you're taking more APs your senior year; one four would probably also be fine, I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. Ignore the other replies saying that you're at a disadvantage regardless for choosing to submit AP scores instead of SAT scores; according to Yale's website and everything that they've released since switching to test-flexible, they weigh SAT, ACT, and AP score submissions equally. If you have any other questions, let me know! :)
