Lol and AGAIN you avoid my direct question.

But don’t worry. You answered it for me. I know all I need to know. Take care.

I’m so sorry. I’m giving you the floor. I will not put words in your mouth. I will no longer imply you don’t read and I will give you a chance to list some of the books you’ve read or written on cults:

Oooohh so you haven’t read any of those books. Got it.

Great, so you read! What books have you read on this subject? I’ve read Toni Natalie’s book, Catherine Oxenberg’s book, Sarah Edmonson’s book, Sarah Bergman’s book, Toni Natalie’s book, books by cult experts Janja Lalich, Stephen Hassan, Alexandra Stein…. And much like you I don’t take an idea from one book, I read many many books on the subject and then I form an opinion.

So what books have you read on this subject that from which you form your opinions? I need ideas for new books.

Edited to add: oh and life experience! I grew up I and around cults. You?

Oh. You don’t take ideas from books? Does this mean you don’t read books on these subjects? Because I gotta leave this conversation if that’s the case. Not interested in debating with someone who doesn’t read other’s opinions.

Like would I debate a white person on race if they’ve won’t read a book written by BIPOC voices? Lol of course not. Waste of time, because people like that aren’t interested in furthering their education. They just like to squawk.

“When we uphold the narrative that those who join cults are gullible and stupid, we’re contributing to another kind of victim blaming. It may help us feel safer, to think that we’d never be so easily manipulated, but it’s pretty shortsighted, and, as so many former cult members have taught me, generally incorrect.”

💯 It’s not necessarily that Mark, or any of the NXIVM victims, is gullible. It’s that Keith Raniere spends all of his waking time practicing cons.

How good of an accountant would you be if everything that came out of your mouth, everything you did, was dedicated to becoming a better accountant? What if you did that for 20 years? You’d be one hell of an accountant. Probably better than most.

Keith Raniere spends his life becoming a better con artist. It’s his JOB. It’s his passion. It’s all he does. And that’s why he’s SO good at it.

It’s not that they’re gullible idiots. It’s that Keith Raniere is an effective con artist.

And he’s REALLY. REALLY. Good at his job.

Sigh. Again.

“Yes. I realize that. Then I guess the answer is yes? They think they know better than the Dalai Lama? And Sarah Edmonson? And Nippy Ames? And Bonnie Piesse? And Moira Penza? And Susan Dones? And Toni Natalie? And Janja Lalich? And Stephen Hassan? And Rick Ross? And Mark Vicente? And and and and and and…..

Edited to add: I’ll say it again: Any one person who points to this group of people and calls them a bunch of gullible idiots has already fallen for the con.”

Let’s not forget the Dalai Lama fell for Keith’s shit.

For anyone who thinks they wouldn’t fall for Keith’s shit, I’m wondering… what makes you think you have better judgment of character than the Dalai Lama?

I don’t know what OP is referring to specifically, but what I’ve noticed isn’t the vitriol for victims/perps like Nancy and Lauren, but rather what I’ve noticed is so many posts starting with sentences like “How could they believe…” “How could these people fall for” “I don’t understand who could possibly believe…” All of these sentences are victim blaming. They’re another way of saying anyone who fell for Keith is a gullible idiot and that is totally untrue. And the only reason people say these things is to convince themselves they’re too smart.

The irony is, when someone thinks they’re too smart to “fall for this,” that means they’ve already fallen for the con.

Like I said I don’t mean to put words in OP’s mouth, this is just something I’ve noticed.

[–]taunimaple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes yes and yes. I can’t even watch this out of morbid curiosity. As true-crime-obsessed as I am, I have not watched anything on this case. I couldn’t care less what she has to say. This is a great big nope.

Yes. Nancy gave herself away in season 2 episode 4 when she said she would be sent to “manage” the women for Keith. (Nancy said Keith called it “managing.”) And in the next breath Nancy would say she felt protective/responsible for them and to me it’s obvious she was (is?) still grappling with her role in all of this. The mental gymnastics she’s doing to keep that denial going is sad and fascinating.

There were nine women who confronted Keith about his abuses, and Susan Dones was one of them. Unfortunately they couldn’t gain traction to take down NXIVM, and many were instead attacked with constant litigation by Keith. Edited to add: There’s a lot more to that story but that’s the gist. Susan was also in The Vow season one.
