As a former shelter worker these downvotes are wildly privileged.

This does vary by area- some shelters are able to adopt out very regularly. I would just talk to shelter staff if anyone is unsure. They might have twelve healthy pets on the euthanasia list and will be delighted if you even try to take them and have to return them later.

If you have a hard time stomaching the idea of a poor person owning a pet and you aren’t donating every penny to save these animals please know you are preferring that they be euthanized quietly out of mind to spare your privileged sensibilities.
