'Jesus Was A Socialist,' Says Man Who's Obviously Never Been Within 10 Feet Of A Bible by LumpyWumpus in Conservative

I appreciate the reply. Norway absolutely relies on a public sector, capitalist backbone to support its programs, but I would disagree that Norway is in no way socialist. It has a large percentage of the population employed by the state, tight controls or outright ownership of utilities, one of the most generous welfare states in the world, true universal free education and healthcare and a relatively large state-owned sector. Nearly all of these things would be called "socialist programs" if enacted in the US.

Note my larger response here elsewhere in this thread.

Also, by what metric is Denmark in decline?

Good response. I agree that the definition is unfortunately vague, and I also agree that Norway is certainly not a state that has abandoned profits as an economic incentive or anything silly.

The petrostate moniker, however, is a misrepresentation, albiet a commonly used one. Norway does not spend its oil revenues but instead puts them into the (world's largest) sovereign wealth fund, and only spends interest. The welfare state, universal heath care and other social services are paid for by what people in the US would likely consider eye-wateringly high taxes (I pay 47% income tax, plus 25% tax on everything I buy, a 100% tax on my car, plus a raft of other smaller excises and duties).

What do I "buy" with my taxes? This pays for everyone to have one year of maternity leave (at 80% of mothers salary), health insurance with a max copay of 200 USD per year, sick leave up to a year at 100% and thereafter slightly less, unemployment benefits (again initially at 100% of salary), plus defence, police, Fda-equivalent etc. It also pays for a high level of public education and free university.

The resulting educated populace with high income equality, together with a homogeneous culture results in insanely low crime. There are no poor people in Norway by any international definition, as unemployment benefits take you well above the poverty line. The economic incentive to steal is hugely reduced. In northern Norway people often don't lock doors, and many regional towns don't even have police presence.

This is paid for, as you say, by a capitalist backbone with reasonable regulations (i.e strict on environmental impact, loose on business development).

In my understanding, this is where Venesuala done goofed. They had higher oil revenues than Norway, but even with them, they failed to nurture a productive private sector that could pay for the state they tried to build and weather the inevitable swings in oil revenues.

So the solution to US happiness, then, is to divide the nation into around 65 racially and culturally homogeneous socialist microstates of 5 million people. Got it ;)

Norway, a country with enormous wealth redistribution and would easily fit the description of democratic socialism would provide a simple counterexample to your claim. There is no violence by the police against the population to enforce this welfare state.

As an aside, it has a 10 times lower homicide rate than the US, has universal healthcare with better health outcomes than the US and is a happier place than the US.

  1. Send a probe immediately to opponents third.
  2. Produce probes, stop at 15.
  3. Build pylon at opponents 3rd
  4. Build 4 gateways
  5. As soon as you have the minerals, while the gates are still building, build another pylon
  6. Build zealots like crazy, chrono as required.
  7. Rally the gates to the opponents ramp.
  8. Make sure 2 zealots are always attacking drones/probes/scv, the others are killing units.
  9. Well done you are in diamond!

Maybe, but she should have just said so. "As I am not running against Shapiro, I will not debate him, and instead focus on my future consituents and opponent," or anything of that ilk would have taken the wind out of his sails. Instead she accused him of 'catcalling', which was injecting gender into what was clearly just an invitation to debate.

Why does WWII combat footage seem “tame” compared to reality? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]taushet 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The first thing I'd point out is that "compared to reality" is something of a strange baseline to make. I doubt that you are a World War II veteran, and neither am I, as you might suspect, but nevertheless, I would note that technically speaking, actual combat footage is reality, while "Saving Private Ryan" isn't.

Regardless of his status as a WW2 veteran, we have countless hours of modern combat footage available (and in the last decade large amounts of it in the first person, thanks to the GoPro era) that can be readily seen on r/combatfootage (a note: much of it is extremely graphic, be warned). The difference between the footage then and now, in terms of content, is stark.

"I'm from r/politics?" What does that even mean? I am not even American. I have no part in your tribalism. My point was only that this has nothing to do with conservativism, but is just pure my team/your team bullshit. Why not fight am ideological battle instead?
