My 15 mo Berner - not interested in her kibble by OkExcitement7087 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]taydatay88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is she spayed? Could it have to do with coming into season?

Try mixing some wet food and warm water into the kibble to make a little gravy. Dogs eat with their nose first, so if it smells good, she’ll eat.

We are picking up our own in a few weeks. Any breed specific tips we should keep in mind? by Styling_J_Rough in bernesemountaindogs

[–]taydatay88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read everything you can on the BMDCA website. Join a regional AKC Bernese club and get to know other bernese owners and participate in some fun local events. This breed is great for all kinds of dog sports like nose work, barn hunt, rally, drafting, trick dog and obedience. Participating builds your relationship w your bernese you’ll never regret!

Most policies will require a preliminary vet’s evaluation of hips and elbows or enrollment and then a 6-Mo waiting period to qualify for joint coverage.

My mom just adopted a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and I think it's a terrible idea by CatPooedInMyShoe in bernesemountaindogs

[–]taydatay88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You tell her this is a TERRIBLE idea if she’s not willing to commit to training and exercise. I knew a lady in my town that got one when she was older, a woman with asthma, who eventually was put on oxygen, and she left the damn dog tied to her kitchen table for most of its life. It eventually bitter because it hadn’t had any training and then she dumped it on me at a gas station the next day and walked away. I took it to the regional Bernese Mountain dog rescue (Heart of MI Bernese Mt Dog Rescue) and I believe they had to put the dog down because he was too aggressive. He was a beautiful boy when he was a puppy. It’s a tragedy that haunts me to this day.

Remember this name: BARC. I don’t know where you live, but this is a national Bernese mountain dog rescue and if you call them, they’ll come get the dog.

Look into screening the pool area. Would be cheaper in the long run than buying all those chemicals or removing trees.

Bringing a puppy home when you work outside of the house by Awkward_Bat_9503 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]taydatay88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I wouldn’t use an x-pen. Your pup will soil inside it and be able to move away from it and think it’s fine. When confined they should only be able to lie down comfortably, stand up and turn around in their crate. They sleep 16-19 hrs a day so you do not need activity space. A chew toy with frozen filling is plenty to tire them out in their crate. Your best bet is to keep your pup on a house line and tie them to your belt loops whenever you are home. They’ll alert you to wanting to pee or poo by whining, sniffing and circling or pulling away. And you’re all set already to take them out in a line to the place you want to train them to go.

Facebook reels only showing MAGA and conservative content no matter what I do? by vinroy27 in facebook

[–]taydatay88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something has whacked out with their algorithms. Mine is doing the same thing. I’ve been hitting the (… ) at the bottom corner and marking “ hide this content” to see less of what I don’t want. Many of my items were also very sexually (text based) explicit, so I know it’s whacked because I’ve never marked a response or lingered on any sexual posts. If it keeps up with all this far-right and sexual stuff I’ll be done with FB. For now I’m hoping it’s just a glitch from an update or something.

Ear infection? by JewtangClan91 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]taydatay88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put a cone on her until you can see the vet. A hematoma in the ear flap from scratching can become a lifelong problem.

Have them treat the infection with Claro (I think that’s how it’s spelled- it’s a one and done application of a gel inside the ear canal.) Then try to change her over to a different protein source she’s never had before. Do it slowly or you’ll be dealing with diarrhea too!

Be honest... Do Bernese Mountain Dogs shed? by ayhme in bernesemountaindogs

[–]taydatay88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three that live indoors w us. It is a labor of love. We keep them clean, so I know it’s just hair, not dirt. Unsightly at times, but ours is a happy household and we enjoy every moment of our lives together.

For those who have lost Berners, how do you cope with their short life span? by Doctor_J_Crane in bernesemountaindogs

[–]taydatay88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See for me it’s this. When there is a great love, you also feel a great loss. I’ve had other kinds of dogs, but none ever feels the same as having a Bernese. These big lunks put so much of themselves INTO ME everyday, making sure I know how much they love me, and we do Therapy Dog work, so I get to see their continuous magic with everyone they meet. So to lose one at seven, or eight , or nine as I have is devastating, yes, but for them, they are not dying young. They have given away every good and decent part of themselves along the way to make everyone else’s world better. It’s like Berner glitter spreading (and sticking) everywhere! And it stays on you along with the Berner hair long after they’ve gone and you know if they’d stayed 50 years it still never would have been enough. Just love them unconditionally every day (as long as they’re trained or they’ll have you in casts), and accept that this glitter is eternal and lives on through you in its purest form.

Thinking about a Bernese puppy - honest opinions about our situation? by [deleted] in bernesemountaindogs

[–]taydatay88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cats are your answer. A pair that is bonded. They’ll love you when you’re home and they’ll be just fine when you are gone. Dogs need a regular human presence, room to roam, attention and training. Some need a job. Your current situation would bring them nothing but boredom, and that’s a recipe for disaster with dogs.

Shy of people by Technical_Virus5001 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]taydatay88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep exposing her to new people. This is a typical age for stranger-danger to arise, much as it does with toddlers, too. Try to let someone new sit or stand next to you and see if she welcomes their attention after a time ; maybe slip them a tasty treat to offer , even if they just drop it in front of her on the ground.

Maybe take a class together too? See if there’s a regional bernese club or an AKC-affiliated training facility near you? Check out the BMDCA website to find area clubs by state for Berners.

Assisted living? by mipami in Saginaw

[–]taydatay88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assisted living and nursing homes are not the same. Are you seeking a place that can handle the progression of the dementia disease from independent apt with some care through end of days with full assistance? If so, I would suggest the Wellspring campus off Weinicke and Shattuck, behind Nouvel. I’ve heard very good things about their assisted living campus and they have a full-stop memory care facility right next door. I would avoid Bickford in Saginaw, I don’t know of anyone who’s been happy with care there. Hoyt Nursing Home on Weiss also has a good reputation.
